Aeliarin has succeeded so you can now enter the node without further problem. This exercise was to find out where the Chain Gate led to, which you now know. You are a bit over a day’s travel from the fort. What now?
Fah'lin (or more BDaddLy) is a bit confused. He looks around.
Are we in a glade in a forest on the prime material plane (PMP) we started from? Or in a ley line dimension connecting numerous nodes on the PMP? Is there a second Chain Gate here? We're a days travel from the fort over land via PMP. Are we able to return in two steps as we came?

You set up your chain in your fort and opened a gate to the nearest node, a bit over a day’s travel overland. You step into the gate in the fort an appear at the node, still inside the chain circle. If you step out you can pick up the chain, but that means you have to walk (ride if you bring your horse through) back. If you are outside the chain when the one hour time limit expires the gate disappears and the chain is on the floor beck in the fort. If you are inside the chain when the time limit expires you are back at the fort.
So if we take the frost Giant's gate we can bring it to this node and return to the fort from here... Or setup that gate here to take us back to our gate.

If you link two chain gates you can’t bring one of the chains through the gate.
Fah'lin gives a satisfied nod looking 'round the glade then moves back to the center of the node.
You have had a successful test run with the chain gate and it is 10 days until you know that the frost giants will use their chain, so what do you want to do in the meantime?
Draw up plans for our fortress overhaul, interview staff, and craftsmen, clean out this out dated hill giant motive. That sort of thing is so last year.

So we are in down time for the next 10 days. As I said, supporting this new stronghold owning lifestyle is 80 gp per day when in downtime, split how you see fit. If no one else chips in then Arya will pay it all. She will also spend a week generating an identity as a minor noble plus all the documents needed to support her (or all your) claims to the stronghold.
Fah'lin will pay a share as well. He spends the down time lamenting the need to find someone to act as Arya's mother, how she really needs an appropriate feminine role model, and how this fortress could really use a woman's touch.
Thar will willing pay his share. He will spend his time studying the layout of the stronghold in case of needing to Dimension Door during the likely battle with the Frost Giants. He is still partial to the idea of being above the locked room and reigning death from above with a well placed Passwall.

Fah'lin wanders the space with Thar, searching for anything interesting or useful. Maybe information about the drow involvement here.
In the foundations a series of tunnels and halls forms a dungeon, making a useful space to store their valuables. Fah'lin finds a collapsed tunnel to the south (18). Is he able to determine where this once lead? To the east the dungeon connects to a naturally formed cave system with a stream. The water appears a bit green, but it could just be the light. Fah'lin prepares Detect Poison and Disease and checks the water hoping to find a source of clean water.
Looking over the space Fah'lin sets himself up in a room near the center of the structure with a hearth and a large closet (10 and 9). He looks over what remains and tries to determine what was once kept here.
"Having a base doesn't really interest me," states Gijigume. "It's just somewhere for other people to attack you."
Arya “People attacked me when I slept on the streets, when I slept in alleys, when I slept in abandoned buildings, when I slept in inns. When I’m attacked here at least my room will be comfortable.”

The water is quite safe. The collapsed corridor used to be a secret backdoor. 9 and 10 upstairs is a dinning room and an armoury, down stairs are barracks for non giant soldiers.
"Having surveyed the stronghold," says Thar "I think a seemingly nice spot to put the chain gate would be downstairs in the small room (14) unless anyone has a better idea."
OOC: Is the thickness of the floor/roof between the upper and lower levels 20' or less? And where in the upper level would be directly above that room?

If we aren't already bound to the walk there's little reason to make it. If we are already committed we will be sure to bring the beasts.

I think you just said you walk back through the gate to the fort.
(Yes, sir. I meant "little reason to walk it".)
