The wind flickers and turns atop the mountain, sometimes pulling Cor closer towards the edge, sometimes pressing him backwards against the boulder, it swirls and grasps at his cloak and his robes, and his face burns with cold even as the air he breathes invigorates him, stinging his lungs like fresh mint.
He places on the ground his book and the spell circle for his ritual, lighting incense and keeping it alight, eventually.
Taking a lungful of the air, he looks out at the view, the altitude. He pays attention to the slight spray, the tiny hints of water in the air, and the dark clouds on the distance and the air that plays between them.
"I am Cor," he says, "and this is who I am--" he speaks his story from his birth to his climb up the mountain. He talks of his successes and his failures. He talks of his findings and his fears, and then at last he shares his wishes, and as he finishes he takes one deep lungful of breath and he blows out the smoking incense sticks letting the smoke rise and take his words higher.
Almost, he feels he can see twinkling stars like those that coat the mane of his Sphinx familiar in the smoke as it rises and four streams join into one and rise higher, not dispersing but instead turning, sinking, coming to outline in front of him a door in the boulder, one so subtle and hidden that if it existed before he could not see it. The smoke builds, the door grows clearer and clearer, and Cor reaches out one hand to touch what must be the door handle, and pushes it ope--
Behind him there is a roar, and he realises he is not so cold any more. A figure of glimmering starlight stands in the door and sixty feet beyond that, a Red Dragon Wyrmling and an upright Snake made of fire, are trailed by three smaller fire snakes. The Dragon appears to be snarling something in a harsh, guttaral language, but Cor cannot speak draconic, and it is clear that whatever they want, it is not peaceful.
FS1: Dashes 60 feet to be within 5 feet of Cor. Nafas: Casts Tongues, "I know the story and the goal of Cor Lethynnil. Wyrmling, why do you seek me?" The Dragon roars and growls in its own language. "You would use me ill," says Nafas. FS2: Dashes 60 feet to be within 5 feet of Cor. Nafas reaction: Blowback on FS1 and FS2 pushing them 10 feet back from Cor (15 feet from the door). Cor: Sorcerous Burst on FS1, Attack: 9, misses. Salamander: Dashes 60 feet to be within 5 feet of Cor and of the door to Nafas, brandishing its spear. Wyrmling: Flies 50 feet forward and from the air unleashes its firebreath to catch Cor and Nafas. Dex save 13 for 27 fire damage on fail or 13 on pass. Cor (fail with 3, HP 0/24), Nafas (pass with 31, HP 337/350). FS3: Dashes to door, beside Salamander.
Combat - Round 2:
FS1: moves to the edge of the door, but no further, hesitant and hissing. Nafas: Nafas looks at the body of Cor, burning where he has fallen on the ice of the mountain peak. "This is not how I Wish for this adventurer's story to end. Nafas casts Conjure Celestial as an 8th level spell. He selects Cor as an ally, and the rest of the oes as his enemies. Cor is healed for 20+6 hit points bringing him to HP 24/24. All foes are within 20 feet of door, inside radius of spell. DC21 Dex Save or 48 radiant damage, 24 on success. > FS1, FS2, FS3: All fail (11, 15, 8), all die. Salamander: Fail (3), HP 42/90. Wyrmling: Fail (15), HP 27/75. Cor: moves away from the Salamander which hits (attack: 23) for 14 damage on opportunity attack (Cor: HP 10/24). Cor touches his clockwork amulet (take 10 attack + 5) and uses his strongest Witch Bolt against the Salamander for 22 lightning damage (Salamander: HP 20/90). Salamander: rushes beyonod the doorway to attack Nafas (attack: 13, miss). Nafas reaction, Salamander fails Strength save (21). Salamander moves beyond the radius of the light. Wyrmling: (recharge: 2, none). It orders its ally back, beyond the border of the genie's spell. It slams its tail against the ground and roars furiously.
Combat - Round 3:
Nafas: "With a patron at your side, your goals in harmony, you find the strength to vanquish your foes. (Spell heals Cor for 34HP (Cor: HP 24/24)). Cor: BA: 8 lightning damage against Salamander (HP 12/90). Action: Sorcerous Burst misses. Salamander: throws spear at Cor, (attack: nat 1) misses. Wyrmling: (recharge: 5, flame breath), moves to edge of spell, and uses flame breath for Dex Save 13 or 29 fire damage. > Cor: nat 20 save, 14 fire damage. (Cor: 10/24 HP).
Combat - Round 4:
Nafas: "With the magic at your fingers you make the strength of your allies your own." (heals for 38HP (Cor: HP 24/24)). Cor: BA: 4 lightning damage to Salamander (HP: 8/90). Action: second level Command "Approach". Wis Save 13 > Salamander: 3, fail. Wyrmling: 9, fail. Salamander approaches, Dragon approaches entering Nafas' spell for Dex Save 21 or 51 radiant damage. > Salamander: 9, fail, dies. Wyrmling: 3, fails, dies.
The fight is brief, less than a minute, but it is violent. As three snakes of flame wind across the ice leaving trails of water, the figure of starlight and trailing celestial vapour speaks out "I know the story and the goal of Cor Lethynnil. Wyrmling, why do you seek me?" it asks.
The 'wyrmling' -- though to Cor's eyes it seems far, far larger -- replies with snarls and clicks and grunts, flame and smoke trailing from its maw with every draconic syllable. Though it makes no sense to Cor, the figure beyond the door in its realm of starlight and clouds and floating platforms seems to understand it.
"You would use me ill," the figure thunders.
Wind swirls around Cor, blasting back all the Fire Snakes as they reach him. With a muttered spell, Cor targets the nearest with a Sorcerous Burst of frigid cold, but still tumbling it misses them.
Then everything is flame, deep, and dark, his eyes melting, his face screaming, his mouth filled with hell. He falls into darkness, flashing spots of white and colour in his visit, his chest unable to breath, his mind not-comprehending---
Then he is awake, and alert, and fine. His wounds are healed, his scars are healed. He feels as if he has been relaxing at a retreat with his acolyte brothers and sisters for a week and is on the cusp of his first bite of a feast that he has awaited all day. All around him, the snow is illuminated by a brilliant light, one that can only come from the upper planes.
There are words reverberating within his bones. This was not how his story is meant to end, and he quite agrees. His strongest Witch Bolt strikes out against the Salamander the upright snake nearest him, which strikes him in turn as he tries to move further away to avoid the blast of his own spell of lightning. He grunts as its scalding spear slips between the joins of his armor and pierces him, then again, he is suddenly well, and the Salamander has been blasted backwards beyond the light of the heavenly magic.
He tries a Sorcerous Burst again as the Salamander is in the air but again it misses, and the dragon whines and growls.
"With a patron at your side, your goals in harmony, you will find the strength to vanquish your foes. With the magic you will find at your fingertips you make the strength of your allies your own."
Beyond the light of the figure's spell the Dragon opens its mouth, ready to immolate them both again. Cor is willing to use the strength of his allies. "Approach," he says to both as his Command reverberates with the orb at his belt and the air above the mountain.
The Salamander and the Wyrmling rush into the light of the spell and are smote against the mountain, bright light excoriating them in an instance. They hit the ground, the Salamander turning to flame then burning into nothing, then there is silence.
"With that strength, you may serve your goals and theirs, and offer it to those who need it, in your turn."
Cor turns to face the figure beyond the door way. It stands in the open air, ten feet tall, its skin the darkest indigo, its eyes glimmering like amethyst and its hair streaming back from its head like the snow from the mountain spire. It wears loose billowing robes, and twinkling stardust follows in its movements.
"Who are you?" he asks.
"Who am I? I am the breath of the multiverse. I am the master of the censer of dreams, the cosmic lord and noble genie. I am he who you sought. I am Nafas."
