[[ OOC: Since Ardana is using a one-handed weapon, such as the Javelin, it is assumed she has her shield equipped. ]].
But Ardana is not caught off guard and interposes her shield to prevent contact that, she feels, would be unpleasant.
Once in the desired position, the tiefling paladin balances her javelin and unleashes a precise throw, which Four Tentacles fails to completely avoid, receiving a grazing wound to the shoulder.
Meanwhile, Paqen takes up position behind Tarysaa and tries to make Four Tentacles feel the bite of the frost.
Elias follows Paqen and praises Ardana's battle prowess, further igniting her spirit.
[[ OOC: Ardana gains a Bardic Inspiration die (d6) ]]
Khelbluen once again concentrates crackling magical energy in his hands and hurls it in a sudden bolt of lightning at Four Tentacles—then takes advantage of the opportunity to retreat out of reach.
Mival, meanwhile, attempts to land two savage slams on the abomination's head and neck.
Seeing the abomination in trouble, Zevriel swings his Twinblade in a series of attacks to finally put it out of action.
Meanwhile, Tarysaa points her hand at Four Tentacles, chanting arcane chants—and immediately three bolts of pure magical energy shoot from her fingers and, with curved trajectories that allow them to avoid obstacles and allies, mercilessly strike the monster.
Four Tentacles manages to deflect many of Zevriel's sinister attacks with his trident... but not all! One of the blades slips past his guard and nearly severs a tentacle. And immediately afterward, Tarysaa's force bolts strike the monster in the chest, belly, and base of the neck.
Blood is now clouding the water around the abomination, and it seems close to giving in. But it still finds the strength to let out a cry in an unknown language and launch one final attack—this time against Mival!
1st Trident Attack: 25 Damage: 6 (pieecing) 2nd Trident Attack: 22 Damage: 8 (pieecing) Tentacle Attack: 13 Damage: 14 (psychic) - and and the target has disadvantage on Wisdom saving throws until the end of the attacker's next turn.
Mival is agile, but the trident is fast, managing to graze him twice, once in the arm and once in the thigh. However, the Doppelganger had focused its attention on the tentacles, and thus manages to evade them without difficulty.
Four Tentacles tries to keep an eye on the mass of enemies surrounding him, but he's weakened by blood loss and forced to divide his attention between too many fronts, so Ardana's jab catches him in the throat.
With a comical expression of painful surprise, the monster brings out some tentacles to try to staunch the bleeding, but his strength abandons him and the abomination slowly slides to the bottom, where it lies motionless among the broken chests in the room.
Thank you! Combat won! You can act outside of rounds now!
Zevriel lowers his twinblade and does a quick, silent triage: eyes flick over wounds, he taps armor, offers a bandage with a nod, tightens a strap, shifts someone half-step to cover an angle. “Upright?” he murmurs, then moves on. (Medicine: 22)
At the corpse, he never uses bare hands. Dagger tip lifts a tentacle, checks for barbs; he rolls the thing carefully, studies mouth and glands, counts limbs, notes scars or sigils, inspects the eyes. He leans in for a brief scent, steps back, wipes the blade, cuts a thumb-length tentacle sample, wraps and knots it—"Dragon evidence". (Survival: 18)
He surveys the room with a harpoon as a probe. Floor first: light taps, rake debris, feel for plates and wire. Walls next: seams, fresh scrapes, gaps that swallow light. He skirts chests, bumps them with the pole, watches hinges and locks—no hands on lids. Anything that glints, he spreads with the pole worrying about 'coins that bite'. Ceiling last: follows cracks and collapse lines, tests a beam. He drags a chest to shape a funnel toward the door, returns to the threshold, taps his temple, points out lines of advance and retreat, ready on a word. (Investigation: 1)
Sorry, I'm beginning to enter a vacation period and while I will try to check-in at least daily, I cannot promise that I will always be able to do so. From September 1, I should be back to normal.
Mival nods: "Yes, thanks Zevriel, everything is fine, it's barely a scratch!"
Khelbluen, as usual, does not speak, but does not express any particular suffering... stoic and proud, the bluish construct simply floats near the 'New Lord' who, this time, he has had the opportunity to save and protect.
Free to explore the room, Zevriel proceeds with caution... so no unexpected surprises ruin the discovery of the treasure scattered among the wreckage of the chests: - 8 pp - 90 GP - 22 sp - 47 cp - 2 pairs of engraved bone says - 1 gold locket with a painted portrait inside of a rather ordinary-looking Calishite girl, with dusky brown skin, hair, and eyes, with an open and sincere smile outlined by her very white teeth - 1 wedding ring, crafted from gold. Its surface is subtly dulled by time and wear, yet it still gleams with a rich, buttery luster. The band itself is relatively thick and sturdy, a testament to its intended longevity, and it has a slight, comforting weight in the hand. Around the circumference, a series of tiny, interweaving knots are meticulously etched into the gold. On the inside of the band are engraved two 'R's and the year 1245 DR.
Tarysaa watches as Zevriel carefully searches the room. "It appears we may have found one of the items if that ring is as it appears." She looks closer at the gold locket. "I wonder if this portait is a relative of Mival's family line."
Investigation: 5 (( ouch ))
"Perhaps we should 'recharge' at the shrine and consider our choices. And, we have yet to find any indication concerning Thetis' mantle..."
Mival approaches excitedly to get a better look at the ring: "It's simple and beautiful... Yes, it could really be the ring Rephis asked us about!"
"But as for the Thetis' Mantle, we won't find it down here..." he points out. "The Lords from Below keep it in their lair, on the upper level. Bytwoeff often has it with him. And when he doesn't, it's with the rest of our possessions. We won't find it abandoned here... To obtain it, we must infiltrate the Lords from Below's lair—whether to negotiate, or to steal, or (but I'd really rather avoid that) to fight."
"I'm counting heavily on the fact that we can negotiate" the doppelganger concludes, after a moment, perhaps expressing more hope than strong conviction.
