Mathias considers directing his moonbeam to follow the fleeing kobold, but opts to keep it where it is for the time being, maintaining his concentration on the beam for now.
Arista murmurs a quick rune and touches two fingers to her temple—eyes flicker with faint azure light as the magic of Comprehend Languages settles in—then lowers her frost-veined staff to a neutral guard, steps forward a pace, and extends an open palm toward the winged kobold, gesturing firmly for it to approach while she listens for its reply to Brekka.
(How do we treat fallen enemies like kobolds? Do they make Death Saves or are they gone as soon as they fall? I was considering to revive the fallen kobold with a healing word in an act of mercy and in hopes to sway the kobolds to our side in an effort to glean information about the area, perhaps, even the keep itself.)
[[Fallen NPCs do not have death saves normally. They are assumed to die instantly at 0 hp, unless the DM decides otherwise. Generally, if you want to save a downed NPC, I'll give you the chance, so if you cast that spell, It will probably work.]]
The winged kobold responds, "We were hunting for some food when we saw your camp, Cherl thought with a big wagon of supplies if we snuck in and stole some food you wouldn't notice."
Mathias, thinking that this will not necessarily come to more violence, ceases his concentration on his spell, allowing the moonbeam to blink out of existence.
Asariel, still half asleep, then realises one of the kobolds has been critically injured, and quickly fires of a healing word, for 10 points of healing (and some witty/pun filled phrase for healing that I don't have time to think of)
Arista nods her thanks to Asariel, then crouches beside the kneeling kobolds, keeping her staff grounded so the gesture reads as peace. She waits while they answer Brekka. When the exchange pauses she speaks in Common, tapping her chestplate lightly, then pointing northward. “Do you know the stone fortress folk call the Old Keep?” she asks and studies the kobolds’ faces for any spark of recognition or fear.
Having no luck focusing on keeping watch, Kaelen turns his attention to listening to the conversation, growing especially interested when Arista asks about the Keep.
Mathias notices another kobold creeping over the berm. With his keen eyes, he recognizes it as the same one who fled earlier.
The winged kobold and Cherl grab the offered rations. The winged one shouts at Cherl as he starts chowing down, "Greedy fool! We just ate when we woke up, and that's food that stays fresh a little while, good for days with poor hunting. Our tribe got destroyed in a war with the goblins to the southeast. the survivors hooked up with a group of lizard folk looking to summon a dragon to worship, they were living in that keep. There were weird and scary humans and elves and such living in the tunnels below, which a few of us objected to and Reinos, the lizardfolk chief, kicked us out, sayig we weren't pulling our weight. We've been out on our own for a few weeks, not doing too badly."

You let the fleeing kobold run. The winged kobold looks at you all, and weakly says, "I told them this was a bad idea, but Cherl never listens to me."

Brekka, still with his spear in-hand but lowering it to a less aggressive stance, ambles towards the kobold.
"What was the idea?" he asks in his deep timbre, slipping easily into the draconic language of his ancestors.
Kaelen keeps an eye out in case any more unwanted visitors approach the camp.

Asariel will (also in draconic) add "We are not savages. You only had to ask."
After joining more my signature got out of hand so I am now a proud member of the extended signature club!! :)
"Not savages..." says the kobold, with a furtive glance at Cherl's corpse.
[[Not sure if it's clear, they are speaking common.]]

Cherl jumps up, completely healed, looks, sees the party not being menacing and promptly faints again.
The winged kobold says, "He kind of does that, it's one of the reasons we were cast out."

Anyone who would be keeping an eye on the woods may make a perception check.
The winged kobold uncorks a small vial under Cherl's nose and he awakens and doesn't faint again.

Brekka retrieves a handful of their travelling rations from the cart and ambles toward the kobolds, waterskin in his other hand. He offers them out.
"Cast out from where?"
[[Brekka is also focused on the kobolds rather than the woods.]]
