Sinak Stonemoon grew up on the outskirts of a large city, listening to tales and learning how to tell them at a young age. He had a gift of learning to read the room, learning to try and please, and who to avoid. He learned by watching, the shifts in power, who got fed, and who had to scour to earn their dinner.
He was descended from high elves and grew up in the elven district, he was approached by an Acolyte of Erevan Ilesere who taught you Sinak the ways of disguising his true nature, of changing his speech or behavior to learn valuable information, a spy within the fold of their faith, who learned secrets about the high born and how these secrets could be used against them.
He learned how to disguise himself, gain access to places that he shouldn’t and eventually, how to use magical means to aid in his efforts.
Sinak heard of the Gilded Reach, hearing that there might be relics there, some way of connecting with his deity, some path that is cloudy to him as of now. He tries to keep his magical nature hidden, sometimes shifting his personality to fit the situation yet his underlying drive and goal remains unwavering.
We have had one player step away, so I’m now looking for one additional player to join the campaign.
The game is already underway and uses the 2024 D&D rules. Play is text-based on Discord, with D&D Beyond for character sheets.
Current party:
Monk
Warlock
Artificer
The setting is a dark, high-magic frontier world where city-states tightly control resources and magic, and the world beyond the walls is unstable and dangerous. Posting is asynchronous, with an expectation of activity normally around the weekend given family/work etc rather than fixed session times. This suits players who enjoy slower pacing around life.
I am very much still interested to play in this campaign. I've copied my stats from original post below, but happy to re-roll if you'd prefer. Whenever he reaches the requisite level he'd go with soulknife or arcane trickster and lean into the 'magic from unknown source' aspect you mentioned in the initial post.
Mertin is NOT human, but will be loathe to let you know that.
He is actually a changeling who has been stealing identities his entire life to keep his family safe. His mother was involved in an accident when he was very young that put them close enough to death that they reverted to their true form. His father (a wealthy merchant) had a scroll of revivify to bring her back but the damage was already done - everybody knew their secret.
They have been hiding in plain sight as hired help for his father's business ever since, but every time they slip up and are recognised they need to pack up shop and run again. Eventually it reached the point where as soon as his father set up shop someone would recognise him and know who the hired help was. The family had to split up to keep from driving themselves to starvation.
Mertin has travelled to the frontier where he is not recognised in the hope of a new beginning.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Apologies. I'd accidentally rolled 4d20 instead of 4d6. Mertin was a literal god!
I'm a little late to the party here (no pun intended) but I like the feel of your setting. Do you have room for one more?

I'd like to play 2024 rules if that's OK - I want to get familiar with the new rules and my real-life game isn't interested in switching yet.

Dugar Rilsky,Reborn Undying Warlock / Aberrant Mind Sorcerer (retired)
Synopsis: Scion of a long line of dwarven mercenaries who claim to have been fighting since before even the Sundering, Airi is the epitome of institutional knowledge of warfare. Raised almost from birth to one day take over control of her family's mercenary company - the eponymous Amber Guards - she grew up with an education in the art of warfare, carving out her own particular niche as a fan of light, fast-paced combat, typically dual wielding swords with ease and grace. Her time learning the fundamentals of command has also made her something of a people person, someone capable of understanding those around her and leading them with practiced ease. Though perhaps not the most physically imposing enemy, one would do poorly to underestimate her; she can have a fierce temper, and is not above proving a point to those who displease her.
Now, she finds herself on the Gilded Reach, her skills as a soldier hired out by the highest bidder to help tame this wild frontier. It's not her first rodeo by any means, but it will doubtless prove to be one of the most daunting she has to face.
Details left vague for obvious reasons but the basic premise is that Airi is a skilled fighter being sent to the frontier on behalf of her faction - whoever we determine that to be - to help tame the wilderness and advance their interests. To her, it's just a job; she doesn't really care about the Gilded Reach, though as someone used to commanding other people, she might care about those she comes into contact with. Bold, decisive, and outgoing, she's always quick to draw her sword if it should come to a fight, and if you give her cause to draw her sword, beware.

Hmm this is what I'm thinkin'.... kept it open and brief, but will add to the backstory if accepted
Character Name (class): Vorun Ironbark (Druid - Warden) Species/Race: Goliath Background: Guide
Brief Bio:
Vorun has always felt out of place among city folk, feeling safer just outside of the city walls, bouncing around from odd job to odd job: A little bit of muscle thrown around, assisting with seasonal crops (or taking them if needed), an unsanctioned healing spell here or there, and always on to the next job that kept him and his druidic nature out of sight. He always felt that something more was waiting for him, cautiously investigating or expanding upon his abilities when possible. Recently, he uncovered fragments of his family’s past pointing to a history beyond the fortified, overbearing walls of the city-state he presided in. A nameless record of his predecessors who were once wardens long before the sundering. Driven by what's tied in blood and curiosity, he ventures into the Gilded Reach, hoping to reclaim his heritage and uncover what became of his ancestors. His connection to primal magic makes him both a formidable protector and a wild card in a fragile society
Aaric is relatively naive, having spent his formative years safely ensconced within the temples and libraries of one of the larger, and more protected cities. He has a devotion to books, and finding hidden sources of knowledge, wisdom, and power. In his recent efforts to catalog some ancient tomes that were recently discovered in the library archives, Aaric stumbled across texts that hint at great secrets buried beneath the Gilded Reach, forgotten surely by now. Emboldened by his curiosity, Aaric has gained the temple's blessing to travel here, to this wild frontier, to uncover what might have been left behind...
Aaric has some understanding of how wild things might be outside the temple from what he's read and overheard from other travelers - about the Sundering, magic run amok, and other dangers beyond the safety of the walls - but he perhaps isn't prepared for the stark reality of it. Real-life isn't quite like the adventure stories he's read, while cuddled up in a comfortable chair in the library.
He will be looking to make friends/traveling companions - FAST. Partly to offer his healing and support services, but mostly to put something solid between him and the all-too-real dangers of life out here on the frontier.
EDIT: apparantly, when you go back to add text to a post w/rolls in it, it changes the rolls, too. Grr. duly noted. The stats on the character sheet reflect the initial rolls, not what's currently displayed in this post.
Not sure if you’re still looking, but here’s my submission
Corvin Hale rode for a banner once.
In the last Resource War, he served as a cavalry scout for a city-state supply legion—running messages through aether-storms, escorting grain convoys across cracked highways, and watching friends vanish when reality buckled under artillery and unlicensed magic. When the war sputtered into an uneasy peace, Corvin found garrison life suffocating. Walls make him restless. Routine makes his skin crawl.
He’s a courier now—contracted to carry sealed dispatches between settlements too small or too exposed for skyport traffic. He trusts a good mount more than most people and prefers the horizon to a hearthfire. He doesn’t stay anywhere long enough to grow roots. Roots get torn up.
The Gilded Reach is just another assignment… officially.
Unofficially, he volunteered.
The frontier calls to him—the open roads, unstable though they are. He tells himself it’s the work: escort routes need establishing, supply lines need protecting, and someone has to map which stretches of land still obey gravity. But part of him suspects he’s chasing something else. The silence after the war left him with a hollowness only motion seems to fill.
He’s practical, disciplined, and used to command structures—but no longer loyal to any banner without question. He respects structure and licensed magic (it kept supply wards stable during the war), but he’s seen what happens when unregulated power slips its leash.

Corvin Hale doesn’t intend to stay long.
He never does.
But something about the Gilded Reach feels unfinished.
