Vakas slowly reaches into his pack and gently brings out a ration, breaking it in half, he offers it to the mastiff, whispering “Good doggy, good good doggy….” He looks for the door and does not meet the eyes of the mastiff, he backs away toward the door leading to the rest of the house.

A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.
Skritch, the blue robed strangers refuse the offer of a berry, waiting for Rachus to speak as suggested. Rachus, you feel a sharp nudge in the ribs from Ember as she nods for you to speak to the them.
Vakas make an animal handling check as you offer your treat.
Thanadol your question breaks the silence and it is the human woman that responds,
"There is little we can do until the creature returns to its resting place," she explains, "It is a shadow beast of Niffelheim, a horror of the elder world."
Kineth, that is your name, correct? I saw a flash of blue light from you earlier. Are you a spell caster? I just became one myself and Thannadol here has been helping me learn, but maybe I can learn some from you, as well. What is the secret to magic? There is so much to know and .... Dealuri will pester in her friendly if slightly clueless way the woman in the blue robe until she provides some answer to Dealuri (Persuasion 21).
Kineth nods at your question Thanadol, "The wards I have placed around these buildings distract the creature. Once it descends we will be safe to venture forth. My companions and I are seeking a way into the temple at the centre of town where all of this mischief started."
"You share too freely with these strangers." the tall blue eyed man named Vandar snaps.
Vakas, while this conversation continues you feed your rations to the hound. It takes them warily and keeps its eyes fixed upon you as you creep toward the closed door.
Dealuri make a perception check with advantage. As you begin to sniff the air curiously, the woman Kineth responds brightly to your questions, "Ah two fellow wizards? We are students of the high mage Merros, we were sent here to investigate this... disturbance. See Vandar I knew we could trust them. This other fellow here is named Gruda, he does not speak... magical accident." she says the last in a whisper that everyone can here.
"So!" she says clapping her hands and avoiding eye contact with Vandar, "What order do you both belong to?"
To Kineth and Vandar, Oh, you are so smart and brave to be here with this dangerous creature. I am so glad we met you and you are kind enough to help us. Don't worry, we will keep your secret," and mimics turning a key and locking her lips. We would be happy to help you go to the temple and sort out all this problem. It can't be easy to live here. Me, well, I don't know what order I belong to. I just sort of ended up with some sorcerer skills. What does it mean to be in an order? Would I get a badge or a cool hat or something to mark me as a member? To Gruda, she signs in Common Sign Language, "Hello, how are you? What is your favorite spell?
Vakas hears the sound of discussion, he backs his way away from the mastiff and makes his way quietly, standing just outside the room, listening for a moment and determining whether to step in.

A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.
Thannadol chuckles to the strangers quiry. "I am of the discipline of divination, seeing the slippery whiles of fate so that I may change it" "Wonderful to meet new friends"
Kineth listens to you Dealuri, her eyes wide with interest. "Oh a natural talent, I have never met someone who can draw upon magic through sorcery. I am not even sure that there are any orders of natural magic users, unless they train to become wizards like us and your friend here." she motions toward you Thanadol.
Gruda watches your sign language with interest. He gives a nod of understanding and reaches out to place a finger on a nearby chair which suddenly begins to glow with a brilliant light.
"Put it out you fool." snaps Vandar.
"The light will not escape the wards Vandar." Kineth rolls her eyes in frustration at her moody companion. You wrinkle you nose at a confusing scent within the cabin but (with a 10) on balance decide that perhaps Sunhill has farted.
Vakas as you stand and listen you hear a soft thud behind you as the hound climbs from the bed and pads over to sniff you. Clearly looking for more treats. You feel little buddy skittering around in your pack, sensing the attention of the bigger animal.
Skritch make a perception check for Sunhill.
Kineth brighten at your words Thanadol, "Oh that is so interesting, where did you study? and can you really assist us in cleansing the temple?"
Fun, wards to protect us and prevent light from leaving. That is so cool! I do not know if I have natural talent, but I am having fun learning how to use what skills I have. Say, how long will the beastie be outside? And what can you tell us about it that might help us understand and fight it?
Rachus is apprehensive about these people but seeing they wish to talk he introduces himself "Greetings I am Rachus and thank you for offering your shelter to us. As my companion has asked can you tell us more about the creature outside. As for our purpose here, we seek to rid an evil demon purported to be somewhere to the south. Wait is that creature outside a demon? Also, can you tell us more about what happened here and to its people"
Kineth replies to you Dealuri, "It rarely emerges for more than an hour, perhaps two. I do not think there is a way to fight it. Only perhaps banish it back to the shadow realm."
Rachus you make your introductions and it is Vandar that replies this time, "This is more kobold mischief, but it is no demon. Demons are creatures of infernal fire summoned from the nether realm of Muspelheim, while this shadow creature is as cold as it is ancient. The kobolds drew it from the underworld of Niflheim where gape the gate to hell. Kineth is right, we can not hope to destroy it, but we may banish it if we gain access to the temple."
Kineth then speaks "This was a human outpost, a fortified town named Southreach, built as a trading post with the goblin tribes of Helgeroth. The kobolds overwhelmed this place and used its temple to carry our dark rituals, that creature was the result. We were sent here by our order to find out what had happened here."
Skritch your keen senses tell you that there is something behind the nearby closed door... a waft of dog hair and something else, something familiar though you can't quite put your finger on it. You hear a soft thud from behind that door, though nobody else seems to notice.
Vakas hears the sound of conversation, but no clash of swords, shields or steel so he decides to venture in, reassured that all must be well. He turns and holds his hand up toward the mastiff in a universal "Stay" gesture, then opens the door, going toward the sound of the voices.
"Hello there. One more, coming in and away from the gas and the foulness emerging from below outside... I'm with them. Vakas Vonelo, explorer and erstwhile tourguide, well met, I guess that you have met our.. crew?" Vakas takes in the situation in the room, keeping his voice low and trying to appear relaxed.

A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.
Skrtichwill wait until their hosts' attention is not on him (he figures that in their eyes he is a Tiny rodent after all)...
As soon as they're focused elsewhere he will shrink down to a spider then scuttle under the door. Then he'll cautiously creep just far enough from out the other side of the door to see what made the noise... (Spidey senses: Darkvision 30')
Sorry guys! I thought I posted but I guess not. I've also been so busy. I'm finally over that busy week, totally ready for more time this week
Thannadol smiles at the wizards and tilts his crooked hat "Ahh... Thank you, thank you. I gained my knowledge under my master, a fine old wizard. I also took education at a temple of divination" He twirls his staff and talks animatedly "So nice to meet you guys! I sure hope I can help you guys clear out the rabble"
The three wizards turn in surprise as you enter the room Vakas.
"Who the hell..?" Vandar blurts as flames ignite on his palm as you have seen Thanadol do on many occasion. Your words prevent him from releasing those magics.
"Well... nice to meet you." Kineth replies managing to stifle her surprise, "are there anymore of you back there?"
OOC:Skritch the thud was the wizards mastiff jumping to the floor to sniff Vakas and the door is now open with Vakas standing in it. I'll let you retcon the wildshape if you like as Vakas has solved the mystery for you.
The large mastiff pads from the room behind Vakas and proceeds to initiate the ritual sniffing of backsides that is shared by hounds all around the world.
Kineth accepts the offer of help gratefully and the next hour is passed in polite conversation as you get to know your magical hosts better. (You may take a short rest at this point if you desire).
