“What if there is something we need on one of those upper corridors? Shouldn’t we check them out? I’m fine to keep going, let me know which way, just don’t want to miss any other goodies…”. Vakas finishes collecting the ball bearings then he starts to poke his way through the kobold bodies, grabbing an extra dagger if he sees a nice one, and any shinies they may have on them.

A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.
"My mom used to tell me stories of Barnabas Bombast. Once when exploring a dungeon, he did not check an open door. And guess what, a goblin came out of it to surprise him from behind! Luckily, it was his friend, Greeny, so he wasn't hurt, but after that, Barnabas always made sure a room was empty before passing it by." As you might have guessed, Dealuri's mom made up bedtime stories and some lessons apparently stuck with Dealuri. You might hear more about Barnabas Bombast, Greeny Goblin, and other characters from bedtimes past. In the here and now, Dealuri uses her shield to poke open the door, sniff (using this newfound Loki-mark power), and peak in.
"Abandoned is good. Forgotten is good. Neglect is good," Skritch telepaths. "Means, er, I think it means noone's paying attention to this doorway. We may be able to hole up here and get the long rest the venerable wizard and I need to regain our magics. Maybe. It may mean that maybe.
"What say all? Shall we investigate this door, then?"
Skritch direct Messages Vakas: "Yes, good Vakas, we should definitely explore those other corridors back at the intersection. Perhaps we can do it on our way back out of here?"
OOC: Vakas you find a dagger easy enough, but nothing else of use as your party wizard keeps immolating everything :) No judgement, just saying lol
Thanadol standing outside of the open door you begin to cast your detect magic ritual. As you do this you see and hear nothing out of the ordinary in the main tunnel. However, (with a 22) you do hear a distant scraping sound coming from beyond the open door.
Dealuri your ability gives you advantage of perception checks involving smell. Make the roll to see what you can sniff out. You nudge the door open with your shield and see a narrow stair case leading downward, well lit by torches. Thanadol you lean forward and see the same but can not do more beyond that at the moment as you are still ritual casting your spell.
"My Granduncle Nobinn Nubbinslaw always used to say, 'Well lit means well used.'
"...
"Most of the time it didn't make a lot of sense. Completely lacked context. But in this case, er, I think it means we can go down there, if we want. But we better be ready."
Skritch Nubbins, grandnephew of Nobinn Nubbinslaw, grins a squirrelly grin.
Dealuri sniffs gently at the top of the stairs since she was worried about sneezing (perception 10, 1 +2 each so 12 and 3). Sniffing around felt odd, she thought. Did this mark turn her into a dog that sniffed out animals? And sneezing would definitely not help them sneak up on anyone or anything.
Skritch rides Sunhill to the top of the stairs leading down and waits. He looks back at Thanadol and sees him being all crouchy and cagey and so he and Sunhill do their best Stealthing (5+1=6 for Skritch, 6+2=8 for Sunhill).
"You first? You know, all, er, sneaksville..."Skritch messages to Vakas.
Rachus whispers "In a different setting I would enjoy listening to these stories of Barnabas Bombast but alas we have a more dangerous job at hand" He like the others will try to head down the stairs as quietly as possible.
Dealuri (with a roll of 13? 15?) you smell a musty animal smell that raises your hackles. It wafts up the stairs, thick and musty.
Thanadol in your mind you are well hidden, like a shadow slipping through the dark recesses of the underworld.
Skritch you suspect that perhaps this is not your sneakiest moment.
Rachas you sneak ahead of the company and head down the stairs. You soon come to a closed portcullis and beyond this, the passage goes on a short way before opening into a wider chamber. There is a strong animal smell down here, like an neglected stable.
To your left a small pully seems to have been set up to raise the barrier.
Rachus will examine the ground to see if there are any clues as to what kind of animal resided down here. He is checking for tracks, tufts of fur, scales, and or claw marks.
He is trusting the portcullis will keep him safe should something still lurk down here.
Vakas follows behind Rachus, staying quiet and in the shadows.. (stealth : 23). He watches as he inspects the portcullis, then silently sending a message to each of his companions..”I don’t know that I want to see what is behind that portcullis.. can we move instead to door number two?”
Skritch looks around and back up the stairs, confused. "Wait, is there a door number two? Or is that merely a, er, euphemism for don't open door number one?"
Oh, he mused to himself, if only there were some sort of overwatching entity who could provide even the most rudimentary of maps for us to help us all visualise the same thing when we try to imagine where we are and where we've been so we can best decide on the next course of action... If only such a benevolent and helpful being existed...
Rachus you search the stairway and the area around the portcullis. (With a 23) you find several coarse tufts of red hair snagged against the jagged stone. Thick and wiry, they suggest a creature of size, their strands tinged with the faint coppery sheen of something not quite natural. The air is still, but not silent. From somewhere ahead comes the subtle rustle of shifting weight, the scrape of claw or hide against stone, and underneath it all, the slow, heavy rhythm of breath. Deep. Measured. Bestial.
Thanadol completing your ritual you now have detect magic up, but your enhanced vision reveals no hidden magics in the area. You ready your firebolt spell as the others descend the stairs ahead of you.
OOC: Quite right Skritch there was no door number two up there, just down here or straight on and regarding the ponderings over the availability of a map, I will see what I can do for you :)
For a moment he'd been wondering why they didn't all just go through the portcullis in front of them (like he normally would), then he remembers that in this world people come in all sorts of different sizes. And almost none of them are Tiny.
Like him.
If the portcullis grill has enough space for a Tiny creature to slip through then, before anyone can stop him, Skritch will Message Sunhill that he'll "Be right back", then slide off his faithful steed and slip through the bars and go for a quick explore (Darkvision 60'). As he goes he will Message the very serious Rachus, "Be right back! Or... are you coming?"
If the portcullis grill is too tight for a Tiny creature (height 18" when not trying to be smaller) like say, I don't know say a Skritch, to get through, then he doesn't try any of that and just spends some time humming quietly to himself.

Oh yeah, forgot about the door.
Thanadol will poke his head in right behind Dealuri and look around.

Hmm, ponders Skritch. Hmm...
