Your party arrives at the Harbormaster's Office. It is a small building, and there is a bulletin board on the outside listing several guides that are for hire. (If you want to see them just say you're reading it, and I'll throw a bunch of handouts at you guys). The door is closed, but there is a light inside.
As Zandak hands Kosadius the rose, he takes it with a surprise on his face but smiles and nods to his words. " Thank you and I believe in every word you have said." With that he tucks the rose within a few links of his chainmail and heads inside as well. He hears Grugg but he is already heading inside.
Since he cant get inside he takes a look around, looking at the bulletin board, taking notice of what is there. Also looking to see if someone inside looks like a harbormaster and is not busy. Then will knock on the door.
OoC: I'm not sure if Alvyn is there in the harbormaster's office, since it took him an hour to singe his face... I have an idea which one he would favor but if he's not there he may not get to weigh in. What do you think about the timing, DM?
Alvyn approaches the rest of the group outside the harbormaster's office, trying to hold his head high and pretend he doesn't notice the singes on his eyebrows from the exploding scroll. He can't read the flyers from where he's standing, being less than half as tall as many of his companions who are crowded around them in front of him, so he has to squeeze through to the front. He silently reads the many advertisements for potential guides, periodically stroking his beard and making "Hmm.. yes, interesting," kinds of noises.
Once he has had a chance to read all of them, he pipes up, "Well I don't know about you all, but the option to go on a side adventure and waive the guide's fee strikes me as a win-win, really, don't you think? Certainly a much better deal than cutting someone in on our treasure. This albino dwarf... Musharib, I'm assuming from context, will take us to an ancient forge, and we'll get to try to retrieve a unique artifact? And all we have to do is fend off some newts? Plus, one of the other guides claims he can't be trusted merely on account of being an albino dwarf. That just seems racist. I like him already."
Kosadius begins to look at the posting board , taking each individual and what they have to say. His concentration is obvious but then blinks as he hears Alvyn to his side and below him. He was about to reply to his suggestion but takes a moment. There is concern on his face at seeing signs of what looks like fire damage to his face. He bends down then and then puts his hand lightly on Alvyn's shoulder. " Are you alright Master Alvyn. You already look like you ran into some fire creature, do you require healing of any damage done to you?" If there is requirement to heal any damage he will, but if there is none then he won't and then continue with the looking of possible guides.
" Qawasha would be my choice. Even though your suggestion of a side quest it's indeed a win win as you say. I must remind you of the urgency required for our employer in this quest. If we take longer than we have to, our quest would have failed and our employer would be dead. Alas I would suggest Qawasha as he is a guide and has a noble cause. For one, he is a druid of this land and most likely could call on help from the land it's self, just like Master Zandak , I will assume. Two, he is charging the standard but negotiable rate. Three, he did not mention of a fee out front. Four, if there is undead to get to where we are heading to, all he requires is help from us to destroy them. With that guide it would be faster to get to our quest's finish. Our employer would be pleased and still alive. " After letting everyone take in his suggestion he smiles. " Plus, after our quest, who is going to tell us not to go and help this albino dwarf with his quest." He smiles then, waiting on the others suggestions.
Grugg, clearly not fond of big (or many) words, looks at the pictures mostly.
”Grugg think two guides best option. No fee good but standard fee ok too. Not share treasure with guide. Grugg ok with any decision.”
Grugg looks around and enjoys the city sights but yearns for battle once more. Then, feeling restricted by his snug fitting bejeweled leather armor, he tugs at it trying to find a more comfortable fitting..
"Well said, big guy," Alvyn says to Grugg, before turning to Kosadius. "It is not that I don't appreciate the urgency of our mission. However, we know little about this region, and it seems not even the locals know much about what lies out there in the wilderness. Going straight for this soul monger, undoubtedly a powerful device controlled by powerful beings, before we are ready is quite likely to result in our untimely and total demises. The druid and his... vegepygmy is it? ... appears competent, yes. But I for one would appreciate the chance to accomplish a specific and, one assumes, significantly easier task, before going to face whatever is causing this death curse. And of course, if we happen to find some treasure along the way, we will be better able to upgrade our capabilities as well."
Zandak nods his head to Alvyn, "I agree, we must become stronger for I am sure an upcoming battle in the light of the Soulmonger. Let's explore this region, learn of the people, and maybe even gain a few allies on the way."
While looking for the others that Syndra told him to meet at the port, Raaldo had been hanging out at the harbor matters reading over the adverts. When a few adventurous souls approached he listened carefully as they discussed options. "Pardon me, but I could not help but overhear. It's there any chance you may be in the employ of Syndra Sylvane? I quite like travel and had a chance to meet with her and she said I could would find a group of souls here that were on a mission for her. I've been here a little while, if you are looking for a guide there are several, but seems this dwarf fellow may need assistance. I'm Raaldo Wilcome Goodbarrel, and yes, I quite like a good barrel. My friends call me RW."
(I think all of us have spoken up on our thoughts about which guide to pick. Sounds like the majority is in favor of a little adventuring to level up and acquire more power before setting into the main storyline. If that's an accurate assessment, our choices then fall to which guides waive their fee for aid in their side-quest. So, we have the following side-quests to choose from: Search Firefinger for a wooden mask or Retrieve Hrakhamar and Moradin's Hammer with the Albino Dwarf. The Dwarven artifacts sound more powerful than the wooden mask, purely by the descriptions, and there are two possible magic treasures to find there vs one.)
"Grugg vote for White Dwarf." Holding up his powerful right fist, he imagines wearing the gauntlet spoken of in the post. "Yes. We vote. Then find armor man!"
OoC: To be clear, out of character I would be totally fine with anything. Alvyn's whole ulterior motivation for being here is encountering unique magical artifacts, so that's where he's coming from. But I also think the albino dwarf's quest sounds fun.
Kosadius listens to them all and takes in the wisdom behind of not charging and nods. " This makes sense and he is also in need of help. Seems that most have voted in that direction. Alright, we find the white dwarf, hire him and help him with his quest. "
Now he turns to the new individual and looks at him for a brief moment. " It seems your timing is perfect, for if your here to join us we were in the process of making a decision on the the leg of the quest. May I ask what you bring to this group? I ask only since we already know what each can do so far. I am a Paladin of Lathander, I am here to protect the group as best as possible, with armor and hammer." He then extends his gauntleted hand out towards the new individual.
(Kosadius only really cares about completing the quest and save lives. Though, he also really hates the undead, he is a Paladin of the Morning Lord. So, he is fine with the logic with going with the albino dwarf, either one was fine with him)

Alvyn's eyes go wide when he misreads the scroll, but he manages to improv his way out of exploding in a fiery death. The scroll crumbles to dust.
"Ignorance is bliss, and you look absolutely miserable."
(I was wrong...but nice roll to avoid certain doom!)
OoC: Ah yes, the old intelligence save to escape fire. I guess maybe it was mind fire.
