“Whatcha reading there? Ship’s logs, oh well must be gettin ready for a nap eh? Maybe you should have an NR-G drink I’ve never worked so hard and fast in all my life! Is that about this planet we’re heading near?” Just Saul being nosey.
The Tar is a strange form of biological corruption of unknown origin currently on the planet of Aphelion II. Manifested as a thick black goop, the Tar has the ability to drain energy from and slowly corrupt living things. A small amount of the substance entering a human’s body is enough to cause a rapid loss of sensation in the affected areas.
Though it is unknown exactly where the Tar first came from, its first documented appearance occurred in the distant past on the planet Aphelion II when it arrived through a meteorite impact and corrupted the native dune people, offering a reprieve from harsh desert life by providing them with sustenance. They accepted, in return allowing the Tar to claim them, and facilitating its spread across the planet via the construction of grand aqueducts so it could feed. Ultimately it consumed all other life in the planet and turned the people of Aphelion II into mere extensions of its will, starting to devour them once they had nothing left to give.
However, before they could be totally consumed, Providence arrived in Aphelion II and saved the dunepeople from their fate and brought them to Forhastelse V, where they were allowed to build the Aphelion Sanctuary and rebuild their numbers. This allowed new generations of Aphelions to live free of its influence, unaware of this history so long as they kept themselves clean. However, their rescue also had the side effect of bringing the Tar to the planet. In response, Providence dedicated a section of the Bulwark’s Ambry to researching the substance, presumably to help counteract its effects and prevent its further spread. Notably, Mithras took specific issue with the presence of the Tar, as it seemed the corruption could even pose a threat to beings such as them, though the true extent of the danger this posed to the brothers is unknown.

Day 0:
Nightmare. I find myself in the middle of a desert - with no other survivors in sight. I scavenged for resources, but soon giant insects began to crawl out of the earth and take aggressive stances. Once they gathered their numbers - and presumably their confidence - they charged me.
In avoiding their assault, I slipped and fell backwards into a waterfall of mysterious liquid. I tumbled within as it rushed me down, deep into an underground cavern. I crawled out, and thankfully the insects have stopped following me. I may have broken my leg - but thankfully CHIT(?) I have a healing stone to administer aid. It will take a few days to get my strength back.
Day 1:
I am grateful that I repaired this drone before my untimely tumble - I would assuredly be dead without it. My vision is blurry - I fear I have suffered a CHIT concussion. My leg has begun to feel better. I will have to continue to wait. I grow hungry.
Day 2:
My healing drone has stopped giving me aid. It hovers far away now - and moves back as I move forward. I’ve been feeling nauseous, and have been feeling the urge to CHIT CHIT vomit. I occasionally spit out black liquid - I fear something is gravely wrong.
Day 3:
My CHIT CHIT drone has left. I have CHIT lost my vision. My mouth and eyes fill with foul dark liquid. I am alone.
“Well son of a-gun we ain’t getting enough sunlight a those fish-heads didn’t stock enough herbs and such. Guess we’ll have to lick the vitamin A off the sticky black tar hole of a planet, ladies first.”
(Remember: The Tar isn’t the only source of Vitamin A in the galaxy. If you feel underprepared for this mission, you can always search elsewhere. If you would like more information, you can always search the control room at the head of the ship.)

There appears to be low nutritional value in the rations aboard the ship… the Tar may be of interest.
