Xolken pounds right up to the tree I am hiding behind. A half-dozen ideas with varying probabilities of success flit through my head. I'm not sure I am strong enough to knock him over. I could sneak up behind him but being noticed would be disastrous. I opt for the plan with the highest chance of success and the least risk but the longest timeline. My shortbow stowed, I carefully pull a flask of oil from my pack while I creep around the tree trunk, uncorking it and readying myself. I dart right in front of Xolken, causing his eyes to go wide.
"Here's mud in your eye," I say. I splash the oil in his face and across as much of his torso as I can. "Let's light him up," I say, then I dart past him, across the 20 feet of field to the tree to my southwest (H23; Uses Cunning Action to Dash).
From his kneeling position the ranger feels his cloak billow slightly, looking down he realizes with a shock he's been seen and a crossbow bolt has narrowly missed him creating a hole in his now damp hooded cloak. Raising to his feet this time he knocks an arrow carefully aims and fires another shot towards his foe.
As the arrow is fired he looks around to see the others fighting the man who appears to be the leader of this group, if I can keep the other lackeys from joining the fight I'll continue to do so.
Longbow +6 to hit 1d8+2 damage (thanks DM, be home tomorrow next post I'll be rolling for myself !! :))

Athletics check for Xolken: 21
After being splashed by oil, Xolken barely has time to prepare himself for the strength of the goliath. The captain of the Zhentarim is unable to find adequate footing in the rain-soaked ground; therefore, he slips and falls sideways into the mud and debris.
Carrow fires a third arrow, hoping to finish off the Zhent that has been lurking in the trees to the east. (Longbow attack: 20 | Piercing damage if successful: 8) The shot follows a perfect line through the tree branches and catches the Zhent in the upper torso, causing him to fall lifeless to the ground.
(Actions for Andor and Ladrian are next, followed by the Zhentarim's)

Ladrian
Seeing Carrow engaged with another agent and the remaining party with Xolken "I need to take down the other underling" He aims his shortbow and fires at Zhent #3

Andor's evocation momentarily lights up the area as stark, white light crackles across Xolken's body. As the captain of the Zhentarim rises to his feet, a flash of pain is visible on his face. He then swings wildly with his scimitar, first at Andor, then a second time at Vigan.
Scimtar attack on Andor: 14 | Slashing damage if successful: 8
Scimtar attack on Vigan: 25 | Slashing damage if successful: 8
Ladrian's arrow finds its target. As Zhent #3 is peering around the tree and looking for an open shot at Rixton, he is struck in the shoulder. Unswayed by the damage he just sustained, the Zhent fires a bolt at Rixton. (Light crossbow attack: 11 | Piercing damage if successful: 6)
(Round concluded. All players may take their actions, in any order).

Rixton:
I duck behind the nearest tree trunk to try and stay out of sight from the thug up the hill (Using Cunning Action: Hide: 8). Tossing the empty oil flask aside, I pull out my tinderbox and a candle and proceed to light the candle. I hope my comrades can keep Xolken occupied just a little longer.

Vigan
The blade of Xolkin's scimitar slashes across the chest of the goliath, creating a deep wound. Vigan does not cry out in pain, or flinch from the sting of the blade. Instead, his eyes narrow as he stares down his assailant, then casts his greataxe to one side and lunges for Xolkin.
Ladrian moves to continue to intercept Zenth#3 and to position himself between him and Rixton so that he got his full attention. Drawing his rapier he slashes at his opponent.
Seeing his shot land true the ranger turns his attention to the others, with Xolken on the floor and another shooter with high ground Carrow quickly heads that way.
(Carrow will move his full movement including a dash action in a direct line towards Xolken and the others)
Rixton, lighting two candles, readies himself for his next move against Xolken, who is doing all he can to fight off Vigan. The violent struggle between the goliath and the captain of the Zhentarim moves Xolken just enough to prevent him from being struck again by Andor's spell. Meanwhile, Carrow leaves his well-concealed location and dashes toward the central cluster of trees (reaching grid square L12).
(After DM has verified the location and action(s) of Ladrian, the Zhentarim will take their turns)
Ladrian takes aim once again at the lone Zhent on the hillside to the west. The rogue sees the enemy slump to the ground and roll down the hill a few feet. The arrow found its mark.
Xolken, now stripped of all aid, continues to struggle with Vigan.(Athletics: 8)
(Round concluded. All players, in any order, may take their actions. Vigan must make an Athletics check).

Laboring in vain against Vigan's strength and seeing Rixton and Andor standing by, Xolken senses his helplessness. He gives up the struggle and growls, "Enough! Enough! Let me go my way."
I exhale in relief. Setting a man on fire was not something I looked forward to. I twist my candles into some soft soil and unpack the set of manacles I retrieved from the trading post in Nightstone. "Someone bind his feet with rope," I say. I lock the manacles around Xolken's wrists. "You may yet go your way," I say. "But you will need to pay your way with some answers at the very least."
The goliath releases the struggling Xolkin and binds his feet with a length of sturdy rope. Dragging him to the foot of one of the larger trees, Vigan throws the remainder of the rope over one of the larger branches and pulls sharply, causing Xolkin to jerk up into the air, hanging by his feet.
Staring at the inverted face of his opponent gently swaying to and fro, Vigan waits for the questioning to begin.
