Blue Eyes shakes his head. "I've seen many men make wagers, not all of them good. I will just watch." he says in his deep voice that carries a slight lisp. He turns to the elf and adds "I'm Blue Eyes Soul."

I have an intelligence of six, I know what I'm doing.
Rusty sidles up to the dwarf. "Ah, somebody who speaks on my level." He spreads his arms wide, motioning at the adventurers, who are now gathered at the pulley, seemingly ready to enter.
"These seven brave souls will descend, any moment now, perhaps never to return." The hafling appears to wipe a tear, then brightens. "Now, I'm afraid all day bets are off, but you can still bet on how many return. Place your coin, and choose over 4.5, or under 4.5, to return alive within the week. If your number returns, you win what you bet. If not, well...what is life without a little risk?"
Rusty manages to tear his eyes from the coin just long enough to look up at Darruk. "Who knows what horrors may lie underneath? Goblins, orcs, or oozes? Perhaps something more spectacular -- a Mad Mage? A Dragon? A Lich? They venture into the unknown, to find their fortune...or their doom. That is the life they have chosen, the life well-lived!"
@Glory apologies, I did not see this earlier, but on desktop, the DND beyond sheet has hit points in a box on the upper right. Temporary hit points is a separate entry inside that hit point box. On mobile, you have to touch the hit point box, which pulls out a panel containing places to adjust hit points, including a box for temporary hit points. Place 5 there, and, when you take damage, take from that pool first. That pool cannot be healed -- it is one time use.
Flipping his coin to Rusty, Darruk speaks I'll take the under. They didn't look as capable as us. My new friends and I, well clearly the smart money would be on the over.
With a dexterity far exceeding your expectations, in one motion, Rusty Bighat catches the coin, bites it, and then places it in his box. "Thank you, my good man! A true sportsman! Your wager is safe with me!" He bows a final time, and begins to work his way back towards the stage, shouting "Places! Places!"
Looking around at his fellows, Not gamblers eh? Typically I'm not either more for drinking and fighting but I like this place. Let's see what happens. Darruk resumes drinking as he finishes talking.
Blue Eyes nods and takes a drink. "I'm not one for gambling, but I will gladly have a drink and another. This is my first one in days." He studies the glass for a moment then drinks again. "I like this place," he says, eyeing everything the Portal has to offer.

As Rusty retreats, a rather beefy half-orc begins to lower the adventurers into the pit, to the salutes and cheers of the room. The ropes and pulleys creak, but her muscles show almost no sign of strain. During the commotion, the door opens, and a human enters the Yawning Portal. People entering and existing a tavern is commonplace, but this young man catches your eye because he so flagrantly looks not to be hiding anything. Hunched over, with a hood up over his features, his head darts from side to side wildly, as if he expects to be accosted at any moment. He spots a corner table, and heads over there, along, and, if that were possible draws his hood ever closer. When Bonnie comes over to help him, we waves her off, and begins patting something inside his coat for reassurance.
Valafar leans back and takes another drink, eyeing the especially strange stranger that just entered. "Say, fellas...Any idea what's with him?" He tries to subtly gesture over to the hunched, hooded figure sitting all by his lonesome in the corner.
Just after Valafar's question hangs over the table, Bonnie comes over in response do Darruk's gesture. "More, already? Meaning no disrespect, but even for a dwarf, ye seem to have no problem putting it away - and fast!" Her eyes soften a bit. "No judgements, o course - but do you want another of the same, or do you have something else in mind?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
no, my dear. I just wanted to ask about the fellow who just entered. I came in knowing not a soul and there he sits alone. What can you tell me of him?

Blue Eyes takes finishes his drink and places it on the table before he stares at the stranger in his seat. Listening to Darruk, he turns to Bonnie with an innocent look. "I would like another drink please, but who could you tell me who is that person is?"

Seconds after he finishes his words, he unintentionally knocks over his empty glass, then smiles back at Bonnie.
"He's sitting alone, but he looks for all the world like somebody's about to join him." Bonnie pauses for an instant. "Or that he's scared somebody's about to join him." She gives Blue Eyes his drink and her eyes narrow at all of you suspiciously. "And here the two o you, new to the Portal, asking about him the moment he walks in. Maybe Durnan needs to know about this?"
Valafar shrugs "I ask only because I was supposed to meet someone here. Though, I do find myself having a grand ol' time with my new friend, eh?"He gives a sharp smile to Bonnie
Tell if you feel a need. I'm only friendly with a drop of curiosity. I'd not back down from any challenge but I'm no threat without provocation either.
A wager? Not one of my usual vices but you have my attention.

What do they face and why do they choose to go? As he speaks Darruk taps a gold coin on the table examining the scene.

Bonnie come here lass.
Darruk holds a random empty mug implying a need for service, but hopes to learn from Bonnie the nature of the latecomers.
