Lae lingers behind leery of the situation he asks, “A few things don’t add up.. what do you mean you were worried about what Barovia was becoming? And why would this child want to run away from you? ...Was she not here of her own free will? Or, at least out of necessity?...”
She is a bit calm again, so she answers, even though she jumps a bit at your tone. "You have seen what it is like out there. She is my daughter. I wanted to keep her safe so I boarded up our place from the inside. As she grew older, especially recently, she didn't understand that all I was trying to do was protect her, so she snuck out somehow."
The dog stands up stretching, then hops off the bed and walks downstairs. Zander, you see it squeeze through the hole in the wall and outside.
Is Gertruda a thin girl? If so she may have slipped out the same hole the dog just did. Zander points at the hole. In any case, I'm going to go get the dog before it runs off. Zander quickly heads outside the house around to the side the hole leads out of.

The dog continues the pattern of running off a ways, then stopping and turning to watch for you all.
At one point, he stops next to a cart that you hadn't noticed before. You see a hunched figure bundled in rags, pushing a rickety wooden cart through the fog. As you notice the cart, you also notice for the first time the sound of the wooden wheels rolling across the cobbles. As the dog reaches the cart, it also stops.
She makes no reply, but walks up to a door and knocks. When there is no answer, she returns to the cart and pushes it to the next house, the dog going beside the cart.
As she nears, you see she has small pastries on the cart. They look and smell like mincemeat pies.
Here you go, Lae. More meat pies.Zander walks closer to her. Excuse me, Miss? Have you seen a young girl come through here recently? Dark hair, light eyes?
She smiles and nods before walking to the next house. She knocks at the house and the door is answered by a young woman. They take in several meat pies, but they appear to have no method of payment. A 7-year-old boy appears at the door, and the old woman grabs him. You think you hear her say "As payment." A young man also appears at the door and you see he and his apparent wife plead for her not to take their boy, but she snatches the boy from their grasp, stuffs him in a sack, straps him down to her peddler's cart, and starts casually back down the street.

She appears to be telling the truth.

(Zander, you had already exited the house.) You watch as the dog runs a few feet down the road, the stops and turns to look at you, wagging it's tail.
Embir follows them out.
Lae grumbles, “Mmm.. alright. Get that hole downstairs patched up. We’ll see to the child.”
With that Lae leaves the house in pursuit of the other members of his party.
Right, I mean, umm... Wait up, Dog!

(I assume I'm closest to the cart) Zander calls out. Hello!?

"Can't say that I have. Meat pie? 1 gold each." She smiles as she offers.
Lae inspects the cart with interest then says loudly to the lady, “They look delicious, but I have quite a few pies already, thank you kindly”.
Then in a harsh whisper to Zander, “Are you crazy we don’t know what’s in those pies... it couldn be Gertruda for all we know!”
That would be... Zander shudders. Ugh! Should we interrogate her further, or just get out of here and hope the dog can track her?

“Let’s move on..” Lae whispers again.
“Have a good day miss!” He calls to the pie lady as he continues forward.
