Dori looks away from the witch as Renaer steps forward, listening to the brief explanation, but accepting it easily. "Then we are finished with Volo's challenge? I expected more. I don't believe I even broke a sweat."
Renaer chuckles a bit, "Well, I suppose I should have expected that. I shall take my leave of all of you now. I have some business to attend to with Savra. Thank you again for your assistance - I am quite sure our paths will cross again. If there is ever anything I can be of assistance with you can find me at my manor in the Sea Ward. I expect Volo will be happy to see Floon - you should take him to the Portal."
Noticing Floon's still rather battered state, Savra lays a hand on his shoulder, mutters some words and a similar faint glow flows down her arm, through her hand and through Floon's body. You see some of his wounds heal and he seems to perk up a bit. "Thank you, ma'am."he says. "You are most welcome friend", Savra replies. "Friends of Renaer are friends of mine - in fact I encourage you to return that we might discuss some ways you could assist the city, should you be willing and interested. For now I bid you good night. Your friend here should rest - the magic that held him was powerful and it's removal, though calm in appearance, is hard on the body and the mind."
One of the priests returns and shows the group of you back to the entrance. Renaer remains with Savra.
Though Sizan had more than a thought or two to add, the man had kept mostly quiet again. Attentive, but quiet. Before leaving the goblin and duergar to the watch, he spent what time he could studying their faces in great detail. But if ever asked, he merely passed it off as having thought the two were 'familiar' to him.
"Hopefully the next visit will be for only that, and of less dire personal interest, ser Knight. Until we meet again."Sizan gives an elegant bow, but remains mindful not to quite let his gaze fully leave Savra. Almost as if wary about something. With little more than a briefer "Milord" and a small bow to Renaer, he follows out after the others.
Once outside, Sizan takes out the pouch of money, tosses it a few times up in the air, and then takes out twenty silvers before holding it out to Dori, along with one of the potions. "Here. I hope you don't take it as insult, but consider it... insurance." Once the coinage and potion exchange hands, he smiles again with his eyes as he says, "Now if its all the same to you, I would accompany you further, as I do not believe in a job incomplete." He looks to Floon as if to explain. "I expect not to cut into your rewards, of course. Just a professional courtesy. Afterwards, we can part ways, least till Tymora or... Bashaba find reason again for us to join company."

Dori would take the silver and potion offered to him by Yazara with no argument, but was not the best choice to give either of those too. The rest of the group who knew the goliath knew this. Yazara would learn in time as a broad smile crossed Dori's face, but no words would be exchanged on the matter. Instead he'd turn to the others, "I'm ready to go back to Durnan."
"Let us return to Mr Geddarm then. Come Dori, while we walk I have much to tell you of what has occurred while you were...sleeping. Fear not, you were heroic even in your previous state!" As they walk back to the yawning portal Gargan would recount all that happened after Dori was struct by the intellect devourer, making particular point to go through in great detail how terrifying he appeared to the halfling's as they emerged in their home.
Content that Dori has been returned to 'normal' he will thank Savra for the assistance and bid Renaer a fare well.
"May the gods you serve watch over you until we meet again."
Eager to return Floon to Volo and also for the warm comfort of the fireplace, the tabaxi walks with Gargan and Dori 'helping' the dragonborns tale where he can. He will also ask for his 'basilisk claw' back that hangs around Dori's neck, which suspiciously looks just like a chicken foot on a leather string.
You all walk quickly through the streets. It is late in the night now and the cold becomes much more bitter in the dark. You make your way through the castle ward to the Yawning Portal, bundled in your overcoats. When you arrive it seems the clientele is thinning - there are patrons at less than half the tables. Threestrings is playing a solo set right now which is pleasant but fairly low key. Durnan is behind the bar, as always, and is currently arguing with a customer over his tab. Bonnie rushes from the kitchen with a tray of plates and heads toward a table to deliver them.
Seated at the bar, currently regaling his neighbour with some spectacular (and probably mostly embellished) tale, is Volo. He looks over at the sound of the door opening, his eyes widen, and he jumps off his stool to come rushing over. "Floon my friend, you are ok! I was so worried and felt I was to blame. I should have stayed with you that night - such a nasty place that skewered dragon. I don't know why we go there anyways. But you look fairly well!"
He turns to you, seeming a little nervous and not really waiting for answers to any of his questions. "Where did you find him? Did someone have him? I knew something was amiss. He looks great - he must have been holding his own when you get there eh? hah hah hah! Floon you bugger, you're tougher than you look aren't you! Well even though you look well you probably need some rest. It's getting late and I should turn in too. This time we'll leave together though! And I'll make sure you get home this time for certain. We must thank the lot of you for returning him to safety. Actually you all look fairly unscathed as well - I'm sure whoever those thugs were they were no match for the lot of ya! Alright then .. " He puts his arm around Floon and turns toward the door.
Dori turns to Gargan, nodding slightly, "Yes, recount the tales as we make our way back." Head held high as they walk, proud he was still able to be of significant use despite not remembering a thing. As Cloudfur speaks, the goliath glances at his new necklace then shakes his head. "No, it is mine now. Thank you, furry one."
Walking through the streets, the cold not bothering Dori in the slightest, but he was hungry and parched. Picking his pace up as he went, knowing Durgan would be quick with a pitcher as he shared what had happened. Though as they entered and he planned for a beeline to the bar, volo was quick to run over and bombard them with questions and thanks.
"Hold up, Spinner." Dori reaching out to grab Volo before the man gets to far. "We completed your challenge and while I'm not too concerned with the dragons promised, you did promise quite a bit to my friends. "
Even with all the thick fabrics covering him, Yazara found himself rubbing his arms for added warmth along the way. But dutifully, he kept an eye out for trouble along the way. His eyes widens as it sunk in that Volo had been the groups client. Surprise soon gave way to quiet but open interest.
"Yes. A miracle." He replied in a murmur. Yazara had been careful up to know to mask his own injury; though, even he couldn't resist rubbing at one after being brought up. Seeing Volo and Floon turn away, he narrowed his first to them, and then glances to the others with a mild but questioning look. But as Dori broached the subject, he chuckled and looked on with an almost eager expression.

Volo turns a bit red with embarrassment and says sheepishly "Oh ehm .. right of course. Well I uh .. ok listen I know what I promised you. The thing is I wasn't expecting you back so quickly. I have royalty payments you see, coming from my book .. Volo's Guide to Monsters. It should be here any time but they've been a bit slow and I must confess I cannot pay it. I'm sorry for trying to duck out; I should not have. But! I do have a backup plan that I hope you will find acceptable. It's actually worth at least as much as I offered!"
Volo opens his coat and reaches inside, pulling out a scroll tube. He opens the top, unrolls it and hands it to Cloudfur. "This is a deed to a property I bought a while back. It is an old manor in the north ward with a tavern on the bottom floor. It's been closed for quite a while so it's a little run down. It's also ..eh .. well it's haunted a little. That's actually why I bought it - I'm writing a new book, see, called 'Volo's Guide to Spirits and Specters'. I actually don't know so much about spirits and I thought I might be able to learn something from this one. It hasn't been that cooperative though. Any way I assure you the deed is completely legitimate! If you accept I can arrange for a magistrate to meet us there tomorrow to authorize the paperwork."
You can see Floon behind Volo rolling his eyes. "Dear gods Volo I appreciate the sentiment but you shouldn't overextend yourself like this." To you he says "While I wish he hadn't done it, the house he's talking about is legitimate. He bought it a couple of years ago. I've been telling him for months to sell it since it wasn't helping him any. It does need work .. but certainly it's worth something"
"That's quite payment. Haunted thought it is. Congratulations you four. Genuinely. Let me know if you want ideas to have it flipped for a profit."Yazara admits. "But with that, our business concluded for the time being. If you should need me -- though I doubt it -- let Bonnie know." He gestures over the red-haired woman rushing around from table to table. "And she'll let me know... unless you see me around of course. Till then, I bid you all a pleasant evening and good fortune."Yazara will on that note make his way over to the bar should no one stop him. He needed a drink, if only for the distracting taste, seeing as how most did little to him.

Gargan
Eyeing Volo suspiciously Gargan mulls over what he has just said thinking on all that has occurred up to this point. As Yazara moves away to the bar he turns to Volo and says "I'm sure that you know a lot more about why Mr Blagmaar and your other acquaintance, whom you failed to mention to us previously, were taken and I don't see why you could not be upfront with us, we would have helped you even knowing the truth. On a similar vein, how exactly is this manor haunted? We much appreciate the offer and we gladly accept it but it would be nice if you could tell us exactly what you are giving us, I'm sure that you would happily tell us over a few drinks no?" With that he holds his arm out towards the nearest free table.
Volo looks at Floon who, though no longer suffering from his wounds, looks extremely exhausted. "Other acquaintance?".
"Renaer", Floon adds, "He was with me when I was jumped. In fact I'm fairly sure it was him they were after, not me. It's a long story."
Volo looks genuinely shocked, "I didn't know Renaer was involved in this! Gods that really ups the ante on the whole thing doesn't it! Friends I really would love to stay and celebrate, but I feel I must assist my friend here home and ensure he is ca.. " Floon raises his hand and interrupts him. "Volo I will be fine, I simply need to rest. Perhaps I will just stay here the night. It's late, their rooms are comfortable and there are people around that can help me with meals and such. I'll go home tomorrow. You stay here and our new friends can fill you in on everything that's happened. It's quite a story, actually. Good night everyone, and thank you again for your assistance and bravery today".
With that, Floon walks to the bar and has a brief conversation with Durnan, who nods and hands him a key. "Sounds like you've had a day lad. Room's on the house tonight and so is supper. I'll send Bonnie up with a plate for ye shortly". Floon nods and trudges up the stairs to his room.
Volo looks back to you "Well, that probably is the best idea isn't it. That being the case I would be happy to join you for some food and drink, and to hear the whole story! I'm also writing a collection of adventure stories for another book and I"m sure this one would make a fine addition. Also, I would ask that you please accept that I am being forthcoming. I know fibbing about the money wasn't right, but I was so concerned for my friend and I had to get someone's attention somehow. 60 dragons just wasn't going to do the trick. I had no idea Renaer was involved - if I knew that I would have had more success with the Watch getting them to investigate! Come friends, let us sit. Your other friend might join us too, if you like? He wasn't here at the beginning. In fact I notice there's a couple of you missing - I hope nothing serious?"

Gargan
Gargan accompanies Volo to a table as they talk, indicating to the bar that they would to make an order. ”No nothing serious. Just something about abandoning his order and a duel in the streets outside the Skewered dragon before being whisked away by shadow figures to renew vows to the order, you know the kind of thing I’m sure. So you didn’t know Raener was taken also then? Curious, I naturally assumed you concealed such a thing from us.” As he says this he watches Volo’s reaction carefully. Insight:19
“It does indeed seem the situation was more complex than any of us realised then. Before you tell us more of this manor might you know why the Zhentarim and the Xanathar would be fighting over Raener? We retrieved him from the Xanathar’s guild in the end, but it was in fact the Zhentarim whom had taken Mr Neverember in the first place. I feel we have most likely made some fairly serious enemies in our pursuits.” As he finishes a barmaid arrives to take orders-“A bottle of fine wine, if you have anything from Tymanther that’s would be my preference thank you. What are you drinking?” He adds turning to Volo and any others who might have joined them.
The tabaxi follows Gargan, Volo, etc to the table and sits right next to Volo....like inside his personal space. He even rests his chin on Volo's shoulder as he speaks and stares at him.
You don't sense any deception from Volo. He appears to be sincere, in fact genuinely surprised at Renaer's involvement (and looks a little uncomfortable at Cloudfur's closeness).
Volo considers for a moment, and then replies "Well I'm not sure. I mean there are obvious possibilities - he's a prominent figure with a wealthy family after all. Bad bunch both of those groups, though it's not common for them to just kidnap someone for ransom. They're usually a bit more subtle - especially the Zhentarim. Did you ask Renaer? He would probably know more than anyone".
"As to the haunted part. Well it's not that bad really, but when you go in there, strange things happen. Chairs tipping over, doors open and close. Writing unfriendly phrases in the dust on the counter. Things like that. It's never done anything to harm me .. well, one time it did pull a chair out from under me when I tried to sit down. But that's the worst that happened. I'm quite sure it wouldn't hard to get rid of if you wanted to.. but I actually wanted to learn more about it! It's up to you now of course".
(still inside Volo's personal space) He rummages around his pouch and pulls out a wad of dried grass tied together with some string and shows it to Volo.
"This is Spirit Grass bound with the hair of a unicorn.....I have no fear of specters or other ghostly visitors once I have lit this and cleansed the place."
Dori looks away from the witch as Renaer steps forward, listening to the brief explanation, but accepting it easily. "Then we are finished with Volo's challenge? I expected more. I don't believe I even broke a sweat."
