"I slept like I normally do... Although it felt strange not to have various trap and weapons at the ready." Halhace says as if it was normal to have such thing in ones sleeping place.
“Let me get your meals, then I’ll try to answer your questions best I can.” Kaden leaves you, but soon returns carrying deep plates. The ‘fish’ stew seems to consist of different crustaceans in place of fish, with bland, discoloured root vegetables and a hint of citrus fruit. “It’s not much but it should least get you through the day.” Kaden pauses at your table for a moment after he hands you the food, before turning to the table next to you and continues wiping it down.
“The tide’s been here for as long as anyone remembers. No clue what causes it, but it comes every summers end. It’s not all bad, mind you. It floods the village grounds with shrimp and crabs.” He gestures to the plates in front of you. “The tide helps feed us while the fish retreat to deeper waters, away from the heat. The thing is, food aint the issue.” he sighs and takes a long pause. “Would any of you happen to be herbalists? Our healer’s ... gone, and we have a few villagers with some sort of infection. Even just knowing the cause could help.”
"I am no herbalist, but I have had some study in medicine. I would be happy to take a look at your villagers and see if I could identify a cause to their infection. I don't know if I can cure them, but I may be able to ease their suffering some, and perhaps get an idea of how we could find treatment."
To Kamos "These bracers we found produce some sort of mystical protection but only for those who are unburdened by more mundane protections like my armor and shield here. They are of no use to me, but I have no doubt you would find them quite beneficial."
“Finally our luck changes!” Kaden stops his work and smiles. “After the tide retreats I can take you to one of our sick.” He sits down on a chair by the table he had been wiping. “It’s a bit late to be travelling to Grou for the celebrations, so may I ask, what brings you through our village?”
"When you are in the buiness I was in it was wise to have something prepared at all times. Besided the one time I did not is the time I ended up in tjis exact situation." Halhace says as he listens to what the locals said.
"What brings us here you ask? To be honest we are simply travelers who are a bit lost. We don't know exactly where here is. As far as goals, for a start we are looking for buyers for those camels we have. You wouldn't happen to know.any interested parties we could visit after I check on your friends?"
“I don’t think anyone in Shallowrest has use for mounts, especially now with the sickness keeping all trade away. If you’re looking to sell them, you should go talk to the Woollers; herders not far from here. This time of year they should be camped just off the road. You might’ve passed them coming here.” Kaden takes a long look at all of you. “This is a strange place to find oneself lost. Are you from the mountains, then?”
"I come from a land far away. Truthfully, I am not entirely certain how I ended up here."
(This is the truth, as was my previous statement. Jaylen does not know where we are in relation to his homeland. Although admittedly, it isn't the whole truth.😁)
"I don't lnow if I am going back to my old line of work. Perhals I will simply find a place and lay low for the remainder of my life. My kind are not known for long lives after all." Halhace says with a shrug.
"I am from the mountains, indeed, though maybe not these ones. Truthfully, we are all from different walks of life, assembled and delivered here through some unfortunate circumstances. Some more unfortunate than others. Our intentions are good, though, and we will help where we can".
Kaden nods as he listens to you, “I see. It’s been a long time since I meet such diverse people. Reminds me of fighting in the army!” He goes silent for a moment with a hint of a smile playing on his face. “Tell you what. You help us find a cure for the sickness and I’ll ask around, see if anyone has a map of Rul. I’m sure the village will be happy to give you some gold, too, if the people get better.” He gets up and goes to the door behind the bar. Before going through and closing the door he says, “You have a few more moments before the tide is gone completely. Then, when you are ready to go see the sick, come get me. I’ll be just through here.”
Halhace nods as he listens, willing to do a bit of grunt work if it meant that they would be able to get some gold and a map to find where they were and how to get away. "If the rest of you are up for it then I am."
"Alright, then we have a few moments to finish our breakfast, and we can all see this mystery affliction. Perhaps they will name it after us if we cure it!"
After finishing your meals you make your way through the door behind the bar. On the other side you see Kaden sitting near an extinguished fireplace, with a pot of stew still hanging over it. Playing next to Kaden there are two girls, around ten summers of age. As they see you enter the two girls run off, clearly frightened by your presence. “Are you done eating? If so, let’s head to one of the infected.” Kaden walks past you and leads you out of the house. As you exit the house you notice that, although the tide has completely retreated leaving behind only some small puddles, the ground appears to still be moving fluidly. The ground is covered in numerous crabs, shells and colourful sea slugs. Although the scene could be described as beautiful and surreal, you can imagine that after a few hours of in the hot sunlight, the smell could only be described as latter. However, for now, the air is fresh with a weak cold breeze blowing towards you from the sea; filled with the sound of seabirds fighting over their next meal. While you move between the houses, carefully stepping over the sea creatures, you notice some villagers already collecting the tides bounty. The sound of children’s laughter echoes past the houses, and soon after, you notice a couple of children playing; tossing the creatures from one to another. Everyone seems preoccupied with their activities and are yet to notice your presence.
Soon Kaden stops in front of one of the houses. All the window shutters are tightly closed and near the front door, over the rail, lay a few cloths. Kaden grabs one, “You should take one, just in case. We don’t know how the sickness spreads.” He knocks on the door and holds the cloth in front of his mouth and nose as he enters the house. Inside is a small common room, with a fire place and a dining table. It is dark and gloomy, with barely any light penetrating through the closed shutters. The air, while stale, smells of salts and plant oils. In a corner are stairs leading to the upper floor and opposite the entry there is a door half open, leading to another room. You hear thumping coming from the stairs and, a moment later, a boy comes rolling down the stairs with semi-dried herbs scattering around him on the floor. The boy picks himself up, “Kaden, hi. Pa has just woken up.”He picks up the leaves he had dropped and looks towards the party with a mix of intrigue and fear. “Are... are these people going to help us? Are they going to save pa?” Kaden moves towards the child and helps him pick up the leaves. “They are going to try, these are good people. Can you take them to him?” The boy nods and leads you to the other room, while Kaden waits for you to pass him, “I have things to attend to, but the village is small and I won’t be far if you need me. Thank you again.” he then exits the house.
In the next room, there are low shelves and boxes, used to store dry foods, and at the far end is a simple bed in which a middle-aged human male is sitting and clenching his head. The man appears to be weak and in some pain; his breathing is laboured and there appear to be small blisters on the back of his neck. As he hears you enter he speaks in a weak, husked voice. “Jarr. The herbs. I can’t take the pain no more.”Jarr, the boy, hands him the leaves he had been carrying. “Pa, these people are here to help you.”
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Jaylen would like to examine the cloths that are being used to prevent the spread of airborne illness, and make sure they have been boiled properly to prevent retaining in infection. He then follows Kaden inside.
Once in the room with the infected man he will kneel down at his bedside.
"My name is Jaylen. I would ease your suffering if I can. May I ask you a few questions?"
While waiting for the man to respond he will try to identify the herb being given to him as well as visually examine the man's symptoms.
(I don't know if you want multiple medicine checks for all that or any perception or perhaps a nature check for the herb. I will give you one of each and if any others are required please let me know.)
"I slept like I normally do... Although it felt strange not to have various trap and weapons at the ready." Halhace says as if it was normal to have such thing in ones sleeping place.
Kamos: (to the party) "Is having freedom that dangerous that you need protections on you at all times?"
