Ian, you give a testing pull on the door, and you're pretty sure the broken hinges are going to keep the door from opening normally. You're very likely going to have to break the door to open it, which will most likely make a racket. You return to the waiting trio and tell them you want to dive into the roiling water and swim into the darkness. You watch the water for a few minutes to get your bearings. The ledge that hugs the south wall is 15 feet above water level. However, when water surges into the cave every two minutes, it raises the water level by 10 feet. After a minute, the water level returns to its normal depth, but you have no idea how deep that is. What, exactly, is your plan for getting in?
Ian will turn to Gruxx and say "Good idea. You wait here with him, and rest. Keep the good doctor safe. I will be back in a few."
Ian fastens his rope to the ledge, and hangs it over into the water. That his to help him get up when he returns and the water level is higher. He then waits, and times it just right to jump into the water during one of its swells, when it is just 5 feet below him. He will swim around, looking to see if there is anything out there (under the fog of war) that might move the party forward.
Permission granted. If Rock stays with you, he can start a short rest as well. HDP will wake about five minutes before the end of your rest.
Almost immediately after Ian jumps into the water, there is a second splash as Glyn follows his fellow elf into the briny water. The two adventurers can immediately taste that this is sea water. How strange! You're under a mountain at least a day's travel, probably two, from the ocean. Ian only has a second to give Glyn a searching look before he is floundering to counteract the strong pull he feels as the water is pulled away from the cliffside he just jumped from. Focusing on the dark shapes around him, Ian begins his exploration. He starts swimming — easily since he is already being pulled that direction — toward the edge of what he could see before. Glyn swims behind him, finally calling out, "I couldn't let you go alone. What if you found trouble?" He sounds more lighthearted than wary. In just a few seconds, the elves can see that the water exits the fairly round chamber that they're in through two separate tunnels: left and right.
While Ian is able to anticipate and even use the strong current to propel him through the opening, Glyn ends up banging into the rough rock of one of the walls, taking 5 damage. (5 minutes have passed.) Glynquinal cries out, causing Ian to pause and tread water. As Glyn catches up, he grimaces. "Maybe I should have stayed with the others." Ian can see that his friend is close to swooning. Looking past him, Glyn comments, "It's so dark. What do you think there is in here to find?" Ian turns to look around. Aside from the rock walls going left and right from the passage through which they just swam (with an opening where the right passage came through), they are surrounded by darkness.
Nope. From where they tread water, they see the rock walls going left and right and ahead, water and then darkness. The sea continues to rise and fall, but the current isn't as strong on this side of the two passages. They seem to intensify the tides.
Ian turns to Glyn, treading water. He is trying to keep his head afloat, and water out of his mouth, but the waves keep hitting him in the face " Looks like I ....led us on a wild....goose chase....Lets...get back before.....the others start to miss us"
Ian will make his way back to the rope he dropped, make sure Glyn gets out, then get out himself. They will time it to wait until the water comes in and lifts them up, then they will use the rope to pull themselves the remaining five feet.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Swimming back through the passage, this time it's Ian who is inadvertently tossed into the rough-cut walls. He takes 3 damage. Glyn manages to swim through without sustaining anymore damage. Timing the water's ebb and flow, both elves are able to climb the rope Ian left.
Are you all resting now? Glyn definitely needs it.
Are you taking a long rest? Eight hours? Or a short rest (1 hour)? If you're taking a short rest, no one sleeps, so you don't really need to take watches. Well, I guess one or two of you could doze during a short rest. Anyway, let me get that clarified (which length you want) before we progress.

Gruxx looks around.
"It's been quite for awhile. I don't see how we can get HDP through that water."
"Maybe we should rest a bit until HDP awakes?"
Ian will turn to Gruxx and say "Good idea. You wait here with him, and rest. Keep the good doctor safe. I will be back in a few."

With DM permission Gruxx would like to begin a short rest waiting on HDP to awake.

Short rest hit die: 20
.
Ian motions for Glyn to stay with him instead of splitting up, and Ian moves to the left exit.
Glyn follows behind Ian as he moves toward the left passage.
Ian, roll an athletics check as the water is buffeting you as you swim through the passage.
Glyn's athletics roll: 14
Ian is not a very strong guy...19
But he manages to hold his own in the water, amazingly!!

Ian has darkvision for 60 feet, not sure about Glyn. Does that change/add to what they see?

Make another athletics check going back through the passage.
Glyn's athletics check: 12
not so good at Athletics: 14

Yes
Yes, we will rest. Ian agrees to take first watch, since he is very cold - it will probably keep him awake a while as he dries off.
