The first day of sailing down the river goes quietly. Odenkirk has his men sailing through the night, not wanting to stop in these lands.
Shortly after dawn the next day however, a lookout spots smoke, and a halt is called. "Damnit all, whatever that fire is, its right on the bank of the river ahead. We need to scout it out. You lot up for that challenge?"

Respar looks to his companions. "I think it's the safest move." Assuming the others agree, he will direct the captain to put the ashore, or lower a longboat if they have one. He will begin moving carefully through the brush and terrain, trying to gain a position with a view of the source of the smoke, with minimal exposure for himself and the others.
OOC: Is the smoke on the more northerly shore, or the more southern shore?
Eya is a bit leery of the captain and the situation as a whole. She replies to the captain, "Fine, we'll investigate. Are we stopping the ship? And who is coming with us?"
Jesla looks at the captain distrustfully. This is a great opportunity for the crew to be rid of us she thinks. " Yes, that is a good question. " She listens carefully to the captains response.
"Yeah we're stopping the ship. I don't like it, but I don't think we want whatever made that fire to see us when we round the bend either. It looks like a big one too. Anyways, we're not much use on land, the sea is our blood, you lot are better off handling it yourselves."
"Martha" glares at the captain, "No. You and a couple of your men, at the very least, are coming with us, Captain Odenkirk. I'm not leaving you and your entire crew alone with all of our supplies and the gold. Do I make myself clear? I hope you're not planning any sort of underhanded trickery, captain. We are paying you handsomely for your service here."
Odenkirk glares at Eya, looking like he wants to start yelling at her. But then he glances at some black pawprints burned into his deck by the hellhound and swallows whatever he was about to say.
Instead, grumbling, he and two of his men gather weapons to accompany you.
Before leaving, Eya finds Snowflake. She squats down next to his small form and whispers into his ear, "Snowflake, I need you to keep an eye on these sailors and make sure they don't try to leave or mess with our stuff. Got it? Just stay invisible and come find me if there's trouble. I'll be near where the fire is. If you succeed in this task, I'll stop calling you Snowflake and upgrade you to Kili...unless you like Snowflake that is."
Jesla happily travels with the others towards the smoke. The idea of another combat thrills her. She walks quietly with the others while studying the captain and the two sailors casually from time to time.
Snowflake nods in acknowledgement of his instructions, vanishing soon after.
The group collectively picks their way up the shore of the river towards the smoke. Respar pokes through some bushes to spot the source. A big bonfire with a spit over it. A centaur is currently roasting over the flames, while a huge and incredibly ugly manlike creature tends to the meat.
Respar reports to the others. "Some sort of ogre, or other big person...thing...whatever. If it decided to start lobbing large rocks at the ship we'd be in a bit of trouble. As I see it, we can either have some of us simply lure it away from the river, long enough for the ship to get by, then pick up the shore team. Or we try to drive it off, or kill it." He pauses, then adds, "Or we could try the ludicrous plan of trying to bargain with it." He looks to the team for their opinions.
Eya pulls out a piece of copper wire and wraps it around her right hand. Then, she covers her mouth with that hand and points to each party member with the other. They all hear a message from Eya in a narrator-like voice in their heads, "This is Eya. What you see before you is actually a Hill Giant. They are big and dumb, but extremely strong. Along with Respar's options of leading it away or fighting it, I might be able to charm it if I can get closer without it noticing. This would make it see me as a friend, then perhaps we could get Grumblejack to communicate with it in Giant to let it know that we just want to pass in peace. What do you all think? You can whisper a reply to this message."
"The idea of charming it and or leading it away seems best here. We'd just need to communicate with the ship to tell them to pass and pick us up down the river a ways." At that Kiven looks at one of the crew that Odenkirk brought along.

Eya taps Grumblejack on the thigh and motions for him to kneel down so she can whisper in his ear, "I will need your help Grumblejack to talk to this giant. But if he attacks me, we might have to fight him, okay? I will first try to sneak up and cast a spell on him to make him friendly. If you talk to him, just tell him that we have a boat and just want to go past him safely and that we don't want to fight."
Eya moves forward as stealthily as she can. As she does so, she casts Ghost Sound to make a bush rustling noise in a direction opposing her approach to temporarily try and divert the giant's attention. Then, she get's within roughly 30 feet of the giant and attempts to cast her charm spell. She immediately prepares to teleport back to her party and hopefully behind some cover if he resists or tries to attack.
Ghost Sound as a distraction to make it seem like there's an animal like a deer in a bush or something, then stealthing up close enough to cast Charm Person which is a DC16 Will Save on the giant. If he resists or spots her, she will Dimensional Slide immediately back towards the group.
Eya successfully slips in closer to the giant and casts her spell unnoticed. The giant shakes its head in apparent confusion and looks around. It is not immediately apparent whether or not the spell took hold.
Eya grits her teeth in frustration as the strong-willed giant resists her charm spell. She tries again. This time however, her eyes flare up like flames with arcane energy as she casts the spell. She prepares to flee if the creature resists again.
Casting Charm Person one more time. This time adding some of that extra juice from the Arcane Reservoir to bump the save DC by 1 making it a DC 17 Will save. If the spell fails this time, she will go back to the group. If it fails AND he notices her, she will use Dimensional Slide to bamf out.

After her spell succeeds, Eya fist pumps in celebration. "Got em," she says. Then, she carefully steps out and waves to the big lug. She motions for Grumblejack to come over and hugs the ogre to show the giant that Grumblejack is a friend.
"It worked everyone," she says to the group. "Nevertheless, stay alert and be careful."
"Grumblejack, can you explain to him in the giant tongue that we are friends and just need to pass by on our boat and don't want to fight?" Eya asks of her favorite ogre.
Per Daishain in Discord, the giant failed the second time around. Rolling a Diplomacy check to try and help GJ with the convincing.
Grumblejack nods and strides forward, a little cautiously. He and the giant start grunting at each other in a strange language that alternates between something like the sound of grinding rocks and strange winds. At one point, the conversation turns animated, and they start bellowing. The giant hurls a rock the size of a human child at Grumblejack, who ducks under it and makes an obscene gesture in return. The giant crosses his arms and goes to sit down by the fire.
Grumblejack returns to Eya and reports. "That went better than thought. He wanted my nice club in exchange for letting past. I told him he couldn't have it. He called me a mushhead then, I bet him he couldn't hit me with that rock cause of his flabby soft arms."
"Anyways, point is, he wants club. We give him one, we can go past. He not getting my nice club, will give other one."
