Jesla's words shake Kiven from the bit of a daze he was in after helping to kill the man in the tower. He slinks over to the ladder and whispers "disable that device and I'll get the rope ready."
He pulls out the rod and uses its first function to draw out quite a bit of rope. The elf thinks for a moment and then bends the rope in the middle and lowers a long loop of it down through one crenel of the battlements, then the rod end and opposite, free end down through the next crenel. In the end there are no knots but four lengths of the rope hanging down. The elf hopes the doubling up of the rope will hold Eya's new pet. If possible, he doesn't have the rope hang directly in front of the portcullis, but off to the side so no one below can see it right away. When all are ready he says "be sure to hold all four ropes evenly." He looks to Eya and adds "make sure Mordenkainen himself over there gets that or there will be a large thud when he falls". Kiven is ready to be the first to climb but holds off until the portcullis is disabled in case they have any more trouble. He doesn't want to get split up from his..."friends".

Since the others had already locked the trapdoors down into the ground floor of the gatehouse, Respar looks over the portcullis device, hoping to figure out the best and quietest way to disable the thing...
Respar quickly homes in on a series of small gears buried in the mechanism.
It takes some work, and a bit of help, but he soon manages to remove them, and then for good measure bend the parts they attached to. If the prison has replacements for the gears somewhere, it will take them a good bit of time to repair the mechanism. If they do not, it will take even longer to obtain what they need. In the meantime, moving the portcullis will be nearly impossible.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Respar drops the gears into a pouch and says, "That should do the trick. Let's go." He heads up to the roof and awaits his turn on the rope down to the bridge.
After the disablement is done, Eya whispers to Grumblejack, "Stay quiet and follow me up to the top. It might be a bit of a squeeze so take it easy." She points up to the trapdoor and makes her way up first and then motions for Grumblejack to follow.
Eya snorts at Kiven's joke about Grumblejack being one of the most famous Wizards in the multiverse. Once on the roof, she whispers again to Grumblejack, "We are going to use the rope to climb down to the bridge okay? And then we will need to run. You need to hold all of the ropes evenly as you climb down. Watch us to see how we do it and then climb down the same way, okay big guy? You are going to be the last one to come down."
With that, after the Prince, Respar, and Jesla climb down, Eya will attempt to climb down, "Ugh, this is not my skillset...." She takes her time with it and slowly rappels down. She motions for Grumblejack to come down last.
In case Grumblejack fails this exercise, Eya will ready an action to cast Ghost Sound of the sound of thunder to try and muffle any THUD noises he may potentially make. Eya will take 10 on this.
It takes several minutes, not least because some in the group are uncomfortable climbing down. Grumblejack for his part just shrugs and takes a few long steps down the wall, making it look easy.
The bridge extends before you. The humans in the group can hardly see more than a few paces in front of them. Those with good darkvision however can spot some manner of structure on the bridge ahead. It doesn't look like a gatehouse.
Kiven pulls down on the rope while also retracting it back into the magic rod. Pleased with the new toy, he stows it away inside his leather armor once again.
"I imagine it is quite dark for some of you" whispers The Prince. "Come, follow me and I will lead you, in this and in all things to come..." The Prince moves out across the bridge, making sure everyone is following along without trouble. As he and Eya can begin to make out the details of the gatehouse and guards on the far end he will slow and then kneel to see what awaits them there.
As the group proceeds, the structure near the middle of the bridge proves to be a winch and attached platform. It looks like it was once used to haul cargo up from ships anchored below. There's no ship down there now, just an open channel of water, gently washing up against the jagged cliffs.
"Well, that's one option, I suppose. Let's see what awaits us at far end before we decide, shall we?" At that Kiven slowly moves ahead, watching the others without dark vision and making sure GrumbleJack isn't too visible against any moonlight behind him.
Jesla shakes her head in irritation. She grips her sword tightly and peers into the darkness ahead. The barbarian ached to be in her tiger form. Her senses always felt dulled after transforming from her feline shape.
Towards the other end of the bridge is the gatehouse mentioned by the servants. A couple of torches provide enough light to see. It is a bit smaller than the one on the main structure. It perches over the bridge, extending out just enough over either edge to present a problem for any seeking to climb around it.
Twin portculli are on either end of the passage through the gatehouse. In between are doors into the interior of the structure. There's no immediate sign of guards, but a dog lies sleeping in between the two gates.
Eya sees the dog asleep up ahead and stops to say, "Dog up ahead." Then, she puts down the sack she's been carrying and rifles through it. After a few moments, she pulls out several pieces of dried meat that the dog may enjoy. "I picked up some dog treats from the kitchen after Aloro said there were dogs. It might be a good way to quietly pass it. Either of you two good with animals?" she asks Jesla and Respar.
Jesla smiles in response. " I have a lot of experience around animals. My tribe has some huge dogs that love with us. I'll try it. " She takes the food from Eya. Jesla walks forward slowly while talking to the dog encouragingly. She holds the food out and sets it down to the side where they can pass the dog safely if it eats. " come here. Come eat. You look hungry."
Light coming through narrow arrow slits in the gate house walls suggest that the left hand side of it is occupied, although there is no one to be seen through them at this time. The arrow slits on the right hand side of the building are dark.
The dog sits up as Jesla approaches, and starts to growl softly. But as she speaks and offers the food, she settles back down and begins to eat. She is apparently content to ignore you for the moment.
As Jesla is on her way to feed the dog, she turns to the Prince and Respar and says, "I can't believe we're sending a giant cat to go feed a dog. Ironic." When she succeeds, Eya is a bit shocked, but impressed, "Well...okay then. Looks like you're up with that contraption, your Highness. Think we should climb over by the unlit right side?"
Kiven pulls out his favorite new rod, pondering the sound it will make, but then looks over at Grumblejack. He grins and whispers "perhaps your scholarly friend here can simply lift me up?" At that he moves against the wall on the unlit side of the gatehouse and gets ready to be hoisted up by the large ogre.
When it was his turn, Respar lifted a foot into Grumblejack's enormous hands and quickly found himself high enough that he could grab the edge of the roof and clamber up. He did his best to remain quiet and began to move and look around the roof.
Grumblejack grumbles, "I not a ladder." But he steps over to the gatehouse all the same.
The dog starts growling again as Grumblejack approaches, but a few more words and treats from Jesla suffice to get it settled down. The ogre has to stretch a bit, but he lifts people high enough for them to catch onto the roof's edge easily enough. His grip is rough, but not too bad.
You find two trapdoors on the roof, one positioned above each half of the gatehouse. They appear to be barred from the inside. You could probably get them open, but it would take a lot of effort and noise
The road away from the cliffs and to freedom stretches before you. It is right there. There is a village a couple of miles to the west that you passed through on the way here. There is also a large stretch of moors to the southwest. Supposedly your benefactor awaits in a mansion on the other side of that hazard. Taking the roads around would be the safer path for most people, in spite of it taking much longer, but you know all too well how heavily patrolled Tallingarde keeps its routes.
Jesla feels a sense of exaltation. Freedom is at hand. While the moors might be daunting to these southerners she would be at home in them. Remembering Grumbles, she kneels down and checks the trapdoors. Seeing how they are closed securely she motions for the others. Speaking quietly she says, " Is there anything that we can tie this rope off to in order to get Grumbles up here?"
