Celric, you hear the voice of Bahamut in your mind.
"Neither way is safe. Nor is either certain death. The mundane approach will lead you to your foe if you survive the journey. The arcane is more indirect, though may align better with your strengths."
Squiggles:
You don't make use of lightning much, but from your academic understanding, lightning energy cast into water spreads out to affect any creature in the water, but more weakly the larger the body of water.
Jarl:
It seems like the passage is likely not naturally occurring but rather carved out through what was previously solid rock. You would guess that much of the water in the room you're in now likely came through this passage from the other side.
Unsurprising. From what Jarl learned from his first query, would he therefore not need to ask if there are any other tunnels in the area? If he'd know that as a result, then he'd want to know about the construction of the tunnel (carved by a creature vs animal vs machine, how long ago, etc).
A look of disappointment crosses Balian's face as Celric tells them his riddle. "Well this Bahamut character has certainly gone down in my estimation if he can't even give you a straight answer to a simple question!"
Retrieving and stowing his crowbar, he turns to the others. "My vote is still for kicking Squiggles through the portal, I don't have my fishing rod with me to haul your corpses out of that tunnel."
Shale clasps Squiggles on the back. "Well my friend, I think we've tried to stall our efforts long enough in keeping you out of the portal. Ready for a journey?"
Squiggles squints as if in thought and says "If there are no interplanar portals, then the teleportation circle must go somewhere on this plane. I would place a wager it goes to the piece of land Fluffy spotted before he nearly became an aboleth snack." Then, looking at the disk they found earlier, "We should hold hands as we go through. We can activate Feather Fall in case the other side of the portal is in the air or on the ceiling"
You walked more than 300' between the two areas, but it may be within 300' in a straight line. Make an Intelligence (Survival) check to see whether you could work out the geometry (presumably with help and guidance).
Intelligence (Survival) uses your INT mod instead of WIS, so total of 18, but you're still good.
After a minute or two mentally retracing your steps and Squiggles helping you with the trigonometry, you manage to sketch out a rough map of the caverns, and can estimate that the circle you found is about 250' in a straight line from where you stand.
One day I will master reading comprehension. Would Jarl know if Commune with Nature would be able to tell him where the portal goes, if he cast it again while next to it?
The thief joins the trail of adventurers heading for the circle. "Now remember Squiggles, when you get to the other side, try and not get too distracted if there are any shiny objects, or a race of beings you've never seen before. The important thing is, you let us know it's safe, so we can join you in killing these beings and taking their shiny objects."

Celric relays the information gained to the group. “Sorry I could not be more of a help at this juncture.”

There are other caverns down here, but no other tunnels accessible from where you are. You don't detect any interplanar portals.

Flynt takes out an arrow. "We could tie aarope around the arrow and Squiggle hold it as they go through the portal."
I have an intelligence of six, I know what I'm doing.
“Simple questions don’t always have simple answers, I’m afraid.” Celric hangs his head slightly.
