I feel like I'm being a little bit of an unfun stickler with all of these notes, but mold earth can only move loose dirt. With stone, you can make patterns appear on it or make it difficult terrain, but you can't actually extract it. (Being able to open up a hole in a stone wall with a cantrip would be really powerful! The spells that can do that sort of thing are at least 4th level (stone shape, passwall, transmute rock...).)
"Huh... that's never happened before." Balian's head tilts to the side like a dog's, looking at the chest quizzically, before he slowly attempts to open the lid.

OoC: Oh for sure, Squiggles was joking, hence the 'it gunna take a lonnnnnng time'. I didn;t make it clear that was in character tho =p
When Balian lifts the lid, a dense yellow-green fog appears, rapidly filling the room. It stings your eyes, and fills your lungs. Balian, Squiggles, Shale and Jarl, you are surprised to discover that the gas in your lungs doesn't appear to be affecting you; you suspect that maybe it was something you ate (Heroes' Feast made you immune to poison damage). However, Flynt and Celric, you begin coughing involuntarily as the gas burns your insides. Make CON saves.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Celric, you take 17 poison damage; Flynt, you take half that. Also the room is heavily obscured by the gas for the next ten minutes or until it is dispersed.
What is everyone's next action? We need to be careful with action economy now, since the gas will continue to do damage to those not immune if they're still in it.
I will say that Dust Devil, since it's a sucking effect, will contain and concentrate the cloud for as long as the spell lasts, such that you could buy some time and avoid damage, but when the whirlwind goes away it would fill the room again.
Actually, let's get an initiative order here. The gas technically doesn't affect you until you start your turn in it, so there's a possibility somebody could get rid of it before Flynt and Celric take that damage.
Squiggles goes to the desk to see if there is anything in the notes that could help find an exit or get rid of the cloud.
"Push come to shove I can surround Flynt and Celric in a Wall of Stone but that would also cut off their air after a short time. Perhaps there is another answer in the room! Shale, was there anything else in that chest?"

You don't see anything; then, you can't see anything through the cloud.
It occurs to me that most spells (including dust devil) require you to see, but this just feels like way too bleak a situation if you can't cast most spells, so I'll say that the "heavily obscured" condition in this case prevents you from making out fine details but doesn't prevent you from seeing general outlines of things for spell-targeting purposes.
Flynt, you don't notice anything more than Shale did.

"I like the way you think, Shale, let's give it a try. Places everyone!"
The thief waits for everyone to get to suitable cover, then slips his key into the lock of the middle chest (evocation), and turns the key.
OOC - We're just testing the limits of your flexibility, DM ;)
The key turns and you hear a click. Then the key vanishes!

Through a coughing fit, Squiggles exclaims "I did suggest Cloudkill might be a problem in an enclosed room...."

Flynt coughs for a second and says," This brings be back to my younger ranger days."

Having used the spell before, does Jarl know whether casting Dust Devil will disperse it, or could be used to move the poisonous particles?

"You know you just love saying 'I told you so'," shale replies to Squiggles, giving the gnome a playful knock on the shoulder.
(If Jarl casts the magic hoover...
With the room beginning to clear, the earth genasi lumber over to Balian to check for what spoils there touble has earned them from the chest.)
