With the group's combined efforts, one of the hobgoblins is quickly knocked out. The other remains standing, but is clearly demoralized by her counterpart's defeat. "Alright, I surrender!" she growls. "But you're not tying me up, gods damn it! I'm going to stay right here and tend to Seely's wounds."
Jolly lowers the third and last rock he had lined up. "Sorry Scary Skitters. Maybe next time."He whispers to the last enchanted stone as he puts it away. With a weak but cheerful smile, he approaches the fallen hobgoblin, and kneels by his side. And without much of a word of warning to the others, he fishes out what looks to be a green berry and tries to carefully feeds it to the hobgoblin. "You surrender, yeah? No more fighting?"He asks if the Hobgoblin stirs to consciousness from the Goodberry.
And if not, he'll look to the female scout and just smile. "All better soon."
Still with his longsword in his hand and sword on his arm Vigar looks at the Hobgoblin and straight forwardly asks "You and Seely why are you here? What is important that you are scouting? Are there more of you?" He is clearly apprehensive with his words and alot of mistrust is visible across his face.
Kenneth raises his right arm up and moments later Kai, in a vicious-like manner, swoops down, perches, and cocks his head to look directly at the still standing hobgob. "I did not see any other hobs while my eyes were in the sky." Kenneth returns to scratching the underbelly of Kai while waiting out the rest of this interaction, unless called upon.
The elf approaches raising one suspicious eyebrow and sneering at the hobgoblins from some distance, "And we are supposed to believe that, after this little conflict, you are not going to take your chances the very moment we turn our backs?" he scoffs, turning to the side and moving away a bit as he mutters what sounds like some prayers in elvish.
The hobgoblin just frowns at Jolly's generosity. "If this is your idea of 'good guard, bad guard' then you've got too many bad guards." She scowls at the others. "Look, Seely and I are the only ones out here, and we were just enjoying the view- and each other's company." She gestures to their matching rings. "So just, like I said, leave us alone and we'll leave you alone. Or just kill us and be done with it. I won't answer any more of your questions."
Jolly had just canted his head to the side in confusion at the initial statement. He seemed even more confused about the wedding bands. But given an extra moment or two to really think about things, he makes a silent 'o' with his mouth, and turns to give a disapproving dad look at the others: Puli especially, if anywhere in sight. "I think that's about enough now. No more being mean to nice hobs."He stands up, helping Seely to his feet if conscious. The firbolg even goes so far as to pick up and put hobgoblin's weapon back in hand, if it weren't already done so.
"Call me Jolly, and I'm sorry."He gives a full bow at the waist to both hobgoblins. "We mean no real harm. Here. You take this-" He offers her two more of his goodberries. "Now we go down there now. You have good day, Miss Hobgoblin." Jolly smiles, revealing big row teeth that looked capable of biting off an arm, pats her on the head, and then starts making his way for the small trail leading down into the gorge unless someone stops him.

"Huh" is all that escapes out from Kenneth's mouth. He quickly retrieves a well worn book from his backpack titled The tales of Morgan Starfall and flips through a few pages. His inner monologue attempting to figure out what he did wrong. "All of Morgan's first stories are about how her and her group defeated hobgoblin after goblin, and this paved the way to them becoming known as heroes, but we took down just this one, and I feel horrible because of this. I wonder if she felt bad while killing these creatures as well." He looks towards Kai and the rest of the group "We're not supposed to feel like the bad guys while adventuring, right? I thought this was supposed to be a fun experience like in all the stories." He promptly slides the book back into his pack.
Vigar has a calm wash over his face. He looks at the female Hobgoblin very skeptical and smirks. "Our biggest mistake might end up being letting these walk away. However remember this does not determine who is right - just who is left. My allies think you are safe though, and your words seem to be true so I will walk away, against my better judgement. He takes off down the pathway after Jolly in contemplation of how this could end up being a huge mistake in the end, trusting in his new allies is what he has to do though something new to him trusting in others. He looks up to Jolly smiles and says "Thanks for those berries again. That was an odd situation dont you think? Do you trust those hobgoblins? I have not had any interactions with their types but I have read on them and what I have read is they are not like that."
Puli will emerge from her hiding place and watch the rest of the party. As she watches them interact with the female hobgoblin, she makes distressed clicking noises. She will reluctantly follow her companions, but turns so that she can keep an eye on the hobgoblin as they go past.
She watches closely to see if the hobgoblin does anything suspicious or unusual as they continue down the path.
The hobgoblin pointedly ignores Jolly and Vigar until they go away. As the party moves toward the stairs, Puli keeps an eye on the hobgoblin. True to her word, she doesn't go anywhere, just staying at her companion's side.
The 'stairs', seemingly made of packed dirt, have eroded away into more of a ramp. The footing is somewhat precarious, but all five traverse it with no problem. At the end of the long descent is a footbridge- thankfully not made of dirt, this time. Across the bridge, a fortress emerges from the darkness. The subterranean citadel seems long forgotten, with lightless windows, cracked crenellations, and leaning towers. A cold breeze blows up from below, bringing with it the scent of dust and a faint trace of rot.
Upon approaching the fortress, one might wonder how to gain entry - the 'door' appears to be an immovably huge slab of stone.
Though put off for a moment at the hobgoblin's response, Jolly quickly recovers and places the two berries on the ground at her feet before carrying on without another care in the world. Following Vigar's response, Jolly 'hmms' for a few moments in response at first, never really losing the smile all the while. "Mn! Don't know yet. But they seemed nice enough."He says nonchalantly. "This one think they not want to get in more trouble too. Remind me of human cubs from home away from home. Won't tell on us, so long as we not tell on them."As his stomach gurgles, Jolly happily pats it. "Gut says also you worry too much. And.. that you are welcome for berries."
If noone has answered Kenneth's question by the time the fortress comes into sight, Jolly pipes up again. "Trut zund stommpaart.Truth is the honor of the tribe. Stories are nice, but never forget Truth. Folk aways mean good in life. But not always do good. Sometimes... not have much choice. It is only when they stop trying -- stop listening to others, that they no longer good anymore."He glances back briefly to Kenneth. "It is good you feel bad, for that means you have learned something, and became better for it, yes?" While keeping an ear out for an answer, Jolly slows to a stop before the footbridge to stare up at the fortress.

Looks up from the path as he is walking to see the citadel in front of him. He starts digging through his memory to see if he can tell what type of architecture it represents. After a while he doesnt recognize it and shrugs assuming it is some long lost civilization. As Jolly speaks he turns his head and asks "What was that language my big friend?" he then walks over to the large door and starts looking at the door, "I am not the expert on locks and doors, Puli can you make any sense of this one? If we have to Jolly and I might be able to pull or push it open if we must."
"Language? It is tongue of caretakers. Firbolg. My people."He pats his chest. "Close to father tongue. Giantish, I believe it is called in common. Old tongue, though not as old as grandfather tongue."He explains without letting his eyes drift away from the door. Aside from offering Guidance to any wishing to find another way around, the firbolg was content to stand and drink in the sight of the fortress for a few moments more.

"Giant you say!? I would love to start learning some of it! I love new vernaculars its one of my favorite past times. It also opens up more books for me to read, though I do not believe giants keep much written context." He then looks up at Puli as he inspects the door hoping to be as much of a help as possible but decides that he would probably be a bigger hindrance than help. So he sits down and pulls out the book he is reading currently "Mixed Unit Tactics" and opens to his saved spot pulls out a pair of broken glasses and rests them on his nose. You see a smile come over his face as he changes pages here and there.
While Vigar studies his book, Kenneth studies the citadel's architecture. He has never personally seen this sort of architecture, but he has read that citadels of this sort are generally dedicated to demons, dragons, deities, or other powerful entities.
Meanwhile, upon being approached by Puli, the 'door' suddenly animates into a vaguely humanoid form and attacks, its every movement making the ground rumble loudly.
Looking down at his book and hearing a sudden commotion Vigar looks up and sees the door start to form and attack his ally and then hears a thud as the Kenku takes a blow. To Vigar time slows down he sees everything almost in slow motion he stands up, places his book where he had been sitting, takes his glasses off and strides over to the creature between his friend Puli and the creature and swings his longsword in a calculated slash. "AH I see a weakness there! Ha I have never seen an enemy like this! So exhilarating! Come Puli hit it while I distract it!"
Puli flinches with the force of the attack, a small distressed-sounding click coming from her. She attacks with her shortsword, aiming for the creature's midsection.
Jolly nods along, though its clear some things hadn't quite been understood. "Jolly can teach some time. And. Depends on the tribe. The Deep Mountains -- Stone giants, inscribe there's in bones of earth. The Sky Wanderers keep great big tomes though. Good for smashing you smaller folk when uninvited to homes." He smiled teasingly down at Vigar, only to go back to keep an eye out for Puli before long.
After it...
The Firbolg's eyes go wide as the door animates and strikes. "Bird folk friend!"As he starts to step up to aid her, he stops short seeing Vigar head towards (or about ready to if going by initiative). Nodding to himself, he holds his shield high and says, "Mother. Grant your courageous children a Bless, so that they may persevere in this darkness."As a faint, but warm, green light began emanating from the symbol adorning his shield, a likewise aura wraps around Kenneth, Puli, and Vigar, though only a brief moment. The feeling persists long after; and, it is with a smile he again digs out stones from his bag of rocks and whispers an enchantment to them. "You want some? Good for throwing. You saw!"He asks, offering Cemendur the less than a handful of rocks with faces seemingly carved into their surface.
