Incantis, Strix and Dekhan, you make it to the location of the Guardpost. What you see before you is a smouldering shell of a building, the stone exterior walls remaining, but most of the interior gutted by fire that is still burning in places. There are several City Watch guards running back and forth carrying buckets of water. The dwarf you saw little more than an hour before is here, directing the guards to extinguish the small fires that remain, but the main event is over.
She looks at you all as you arrive. You? I thought you were coming in the morning? Well, there's not much left to see.
Almost, the woman replies with a now-familiar scowl. None of the guards died. Most don't stay here overnight, and the ones on duty got out. We had four in the cells: a thief, some drunk kid, and your two bandits - all of them burned before they could be released. There won't be any questioning now. She pauses. Fire. Dammit. They've been showy, trying to provoke a response, but burning down a guardpost is... She runs out of words, and just stares and the building and then at you.
Scupper staggers drunkenly into the Blushing Mermaid smelling like pints of rot gut.
"Well we're just gonna call tonight fruitless and maybe have a bit o' fruit so ye can call me a liar. Barkeep! One last bottle o' yer worst afore I kiss ye goodnight and find the sweet solace o' me bed!"
He tosses a few random coins in the direction of the barkeep...if one is still working. If not, he tosses them where he thinks a barkeep might have been.
(Scupper enters the bar after Incantis, Strix and Dekhan have left. Varinth is up snoring in his room.)
There is still someone working and serving in the common room, though it's clear they are winding down, cleaning and tidying. They get Scupper his drink, and get on with their work.
No, she says curtly. Not that I know of. But there'll be a full investigation. She sighs and then frowns. What are you all doing here anyway? And aren't you missing two of your friends?
Dekhan surveys the smoldering rubble. The guard’s question snaps him out of his momentary reverie. We wanted to question those men and we didn’t want to be late. Unfortunately it seems we were. The other two of us? Sleeping it off, I imagine, a bit of a proclivity for the sauce, I’m afraid.
Scupper... feeling bored and tired and annoyed at how the days events have conspired against him, thinks on his upcoming meeting and keeps ordering drinks...for no other reason than to keep the barkeep up at night when he clearly wants bed.
"Give us another shot of the cheap stuff, lad"
What exactly is he getting from these Zhents he's aligned himself with. That one back at the mines...she didn't give him extra coin for his valuable info...just this contact here who intends to use him as muscle or some shite.
"Well that's it then. I'll jest tell her. I need profit or she can swing in the wind!"
"Barkeep another shot. Keep em coming. This'll be a long night."
A few cogs begin to turn in Strix's head as he pokes at the wreckage, wondering how these bandits were able to do this under the noses of the city watch.
And with that, Strix leads Dekhan and Incantis back to the Blushing Mermaid.
(Incantis, you can continue to investigate through Zhudala if you wish.)
You find the inn to find only two souls in the common room; behind the bar, a young man you've never seen before on the point of dozing off, and at the bar itself, a single, drunk halfling by the name of Scupper. There's no sign of Varinth, but also no sign of trouble.
And jest where the feck 'ave you lot been? This 'ere barkeep be getting lonely with jest me for custom. I be needing fruit as well. Sometin' about me evening was fruitless. And jest where is our dragon? Vaz the mage o' fire and flame is always with ya! Fooomch! Hahaha! Where is me brother in cups?
Strix ignores Scupper's banter, roughly inspecting and patting him down for flames in a frantic flurry. When he finds none, he pauses for a brief relieved hug then hares off up the stairs looking for Vaz and/or errant evil fire mage interlopers in need of a staff to the face.
Dekhan looks at Scupper, relieved to see that his friend is alright Thank the Light. We went to see about questioning the bandits but it the Fire Mages got there first, burned the watch house to the ground. Killed our bandits and a couple of others, burned to death trapped in their cells. he shakes his head There is a growing debt to be paid by these bastards, Scup. Anyway, we were worried that they might have come here as well. He studies Scupper as he fights with himself, not wanting to pry into his friend's private affairs. Where did you get off to, Scup?
Incantis scowls at the watchmaster's word. "Blackened damned fates..." he mutters to himself. "Captain, we want to help; please, if anything relevant comes up, could you send a runner to the Blushing Mermaid?" He follows the others back to the tavern.
As the party reaches the inn and is greeted by Scupper, Incantis chimes in. "It seems the bandits' own worst fears came true; fire and a smoldering cell. I am glad to find you were out of harms way, fateful wandering often keep us safe in strange ways."

OOC: I was going to say "Lack of oxygen" but if it's okay for him to have a long rest I'm down with that.

Dekhan surveys the wreckage for a moment before addressing the dwarf. What happened here? Did everyone make it out alright?

Incantis' face is a grim mask, his eyes a fiery magenta reflecting the flames of the burning building. "Did anyone see anything?"

She shrugs. Well, that's not going to happen now, is it. And she stomps off to speak to her guards.

"Hmmm... Burn cell, burn watch... Burn Inn easy 'nuff.... Friend Vaz!"
He takes off in the direction of The Mermaid, anxious that they may have left Varinth to face retaliation alone.

To the others...
Jest what is that all fecking about, then?
Strix, you find Varinth in his room, safe and sound. There is snoring, and there is drool, but no evidence of evil fire mage attack.
