You been on the damn boat now two days. Ye threw up jest over there yesterday when we interrogated that dry shite from the last fight! Now yer money may be dirty and yer clothes as well, but ye have an official invite so what’s wrong with visiting early?
Eh? Maybe you just show up with us as your retinue and ask to meet with the family. Ye got an invite for dinner. “What’s this about?” Maybe they know nothing. Maybe we walk into a Forsaken ambush. Maybe we find yer camel and all is forgiven
Incantis listens to the conversation quietly for a span. "I'm happy to play the part of your attendant if you need backup. Dekhan could fit that part as well. Meanwhile Strix and Scupper can mosey about in the shadows, uncover a thing or two?"

Incantis, half-elf warlock (great old one) 4/bard 1 ● Thorok Earthhand, hill dwarf mountain druid 6/grave cleric 2
Cragmyre Ironseed, earth genasi ancestral barbarian 3 ● Cyrus Natriallae, aquatic half-elf warlock of the deep 3
Let’s figure out where this Devlayne lives. We could send yer demon bird to inspect...maybe even listen in on sometin. We have te be at the Mermaid tonight te hopefully meet the guild.
You discuss your plans together on the gently-bobbing floating platform. Around you, though not too close, the docks are alive and busy with the day's business, and ships come and go. There's no food service, but you're able to assemble a breakfast out of your rations if you choose to. No-one disturbs you, or seems to be watching you.
"That sounds like a good idea; get our bearings. Does someone want to accompany me on an intelligence mission? Ask around, see what we can rummage up about these nobles."

Dekhan nodsI can accompany you, Cantis, I'm not much for sneaking, but I can play the part of your charming bodyguard well enough! Shall we head out now? I'm growing a bit restless...
Having neither contacts nor social graces, Strix will look for the nearest entrance into the sewers and begin to methodically explore to get his bearings and try to get a feel for how the city above relates to the world below.
Scupper, how are you going to search for a thieves' guild contact? Let me know your approach, and give me an appropriate roll - probably an Investigation check, but it depends.
Incantis and Dekhan, let me know how you're going to proceed as well.
Strix, there's no difficulty in finding an entrance to the extensive sewer network of the city. You descend into the smelly depths - which are not that much worse than the Docks district, or certain parts of it. There's no-one about that the moment that you can see, but still a general sense that these passages are in regular use. If you're just trying to get your bearings, then roll me a Perception check.
I suppose Incantis is going to look for some loose-tongued sailor, the type it looks like sails on a ship oft used and what gets around, and who hears all sorts of tales and is desperate for a new ear to tell them to. Failing that, he'll look for someone who looks noble and ask some innocent questions.

Loose-tongued sailors are not hard to find in the Docks. You stand on the quay as a man, clearly a sailor from his garb, drinks from a mug of ale and watches other sailors walk, stumble or be carried to various ships berthed nearby. He's human, fifties you would guess, with a thick beard and balding pate, a fair few scars as well. He seems to have a friendly word for everyone who passes by, and nods as Incantis and Dekhan approach: You look a little lost there, friend.
Before everyone splits up, Vaz will get a bit more information regarding their current situation. Getting a bit more of a grasp of current events he will inform the crew that he will make a solo sorte into the market region of the city and get himself some appropriately regal clothing for the upcoming ball.
Varinth will head into the city, elaborate pantaloons on his mind.
151213Scupper uses thieves cant sprinkled into conversation at taverns and gambling houses. Keeping an eye peeled for any Forsaken and making sure to make at least two trips to the Mermaid to check on potential messages.
The day is a little warmer than most recent ones. The sky is mostly clear, and the few clouds are white rather than grey.
Dekhan, the man smiles, shrugs, and takes a swig of his drink. He doesn't respond directly.
Scupper, there are no messages for you at the Blushing Mermaid. You do however hear rumors and stories, and make enough tentative contacts to learn of at least three guilds of thieves operating across Waterdeep. One is the famous Shadow Thieves, headquartered in Amn, the largest thieves' guild in Faerun. The Plague Rats seem more focused on working the Docks, and are elite and rather elusive. Finally, the Xanathar Guild is known to operate in the city, though several people you spoke to believe that their mysterious leader Xanathar has been killed and the guild is falling apart.
You're fairly sure the gentlemen you met in the sewers were from the Shadow Thieves. If you want to pursue this, pick the guild you want to focus on and roll a Persuasion check to try to set up a meeting.
Varinth, Waterdeep has elaborate pantaloons aplenty. What's your budget here?
The intent is, basically, if we find ourselves back down here, to have enough familiarity to be able to recognise this area if we're close to it, have a rough idea of where we are by which direction the waste is flowing, age of the brick work, numbering on grates and covers, that kind of thing. Basically understand the methodology behind the layout in case we need to get somewhere in a hurry and under duress.
Reading that back and looking at his int score, I think he's getting lost in there for good.

Varinth gurns his face in concentration. Vague and jumbled memories bob to the surface like apples in a barrel, and just as difficult to grasp.
Verily. Verily. he lies.
He stands and stretches, joints crunching.
What do you need me to do?
Eh? Maybe you just show up with us as your retinue and ask to meet with the family. Ye got an invite for dinner. “What’s this about?” Maybe they know nothing. Maybe we walk into a Forsaken ambush. Maybe we find yer camel and all is forgiven
