The bartender is utterly engrossed, and as Dekhan brings his speech to an end, she begins to applaud. Many others in the common room do the same, some eagerly, some a little more half-heartedly, but most join in. Well said indeed, the bartender says loudly. Good sir, the brave defenders of this city will always find the warmest of welcomes at the Grinning Lion.
The room returns to normal, though there are far more eyes on Dekhan and Varinth than was the case before. Incantis, you seem to have gathered less attention, though the gnome woman is now eyeing you curiously. As far as you can tell, no-one has suddenly got up to leave the room in response to what they have seen or heard.
The bartender leans in once again to Dekhan. A marvellous tale. You will certainly make a name for yourselves, such a group. Have you a name, in case anyone should inquire after you? The group, I mean to say. Has the group a name?
((I've been calling us The Crew: Motley in my file folders))
Varinth raises his glass in response to Dekhans flattering toast and drinks. And then drinks another one, feeling only one would not do the speech justice. He joins Dekhan at the bar.
Well if that lovely oratory was in order to raise heckles I'm afraid I didn't notice any.. heckles. What's next?
Heckles? Why, whatever do you mean, good sir? It's 'Vaz', if I understand my friend's words. Are you looking for someone in this establishment? She leans in close to you. Are you on a mission?
About the gang of mages roaming the city and threatening to burn it to the ground? The bartender's voice is an excited whisper. Not a thing, I'm afraid. Hardly the type to frequent this establishment. I'm sure the Watch will have them in chains in a day or two. So brave, our dear Watchmen, so fearless in their duty. Why? Do you know anything about them? Any secrets that they wouldn't want to get out?
Incantis uses Dekhan's speech as an opportunity to perform a quick incantation, and casts detect thoughts. He probes around the room, never so deep as to arouse any notice or suspicion, and looks for signs of fear or anger at the paladin declaring himself in opposition to the Forsaken. He's sent a signal to Zhudala outside, that the back area of the bar is worth investigating. He smiles at the old gnomish woman, playing the part of a hero. "I don't believe I caught your name...?"

Incantis, half-elf warlock (great old one) 4/bard 1 ● Thorok Earthhand, hill dwarf mountain druid 6/grave cleric 2
Cragmyre Ironseed, earth genasi ancestral barbarian 3 ● Cyrus Natriallae, aquatic half-elf warlock of the deep 3
Incantis, you get a basic reading of many of the clients of the tavern. On their minds are: drinking, relaxing, worry about family, irritation that someone is late or unreliable, and so on. All very mundane; nothing that piques your curiosity. Certainly no fear or anger regarding anything that has happened.
Zhudala flaps to a closed window and peeks inside, seeing an ordinary sitting room, rather nicely decorated, with a fireplace, pictures on the walls, comfortable chairs and a sofa.
Grilda, the gnomish woman replies. And Master Cantis, if the armoured gentleman is to be believed? Something I can do for you?
Scupper goes back across to the park, sits back down next to the halfling, raises an eyebrow in her direction and then goes back to watching the Lion entrance.
“Ye see with a life piratical, ye grab and ye steal but there’s so little time in betwixt the grabbing and stealing te have te think about, whereas heroing...or heroism...or whatever ye call it. There’s jest so much bloody thinking, ye know?”
Ye know I'd jest let meself inside and start asking me own questions but eh...subtlety is lost on me. I guess I'm not fancy enough, jest like! Eh, sister? Haha!
Scupper, you can make a Persuasion check with disadvantage if you like, but there's nothing about this woman's demeanour that suggests she wants to interact with you.
(Fair enough. There's no sign that anyone is leaving the inn troubled by what has happened inside. Strix and Scupper wait patiently outside, while Dekhan, Incantis and Varinth continue their investigations within.)
Dekhan rubs a hand across the stubble on his chin Anything the watch might not want getting out? Only the baddies we help put away, I think! Dekhan laughs but takes a moment to consider the bartender surreptitiously. Does he get any kind of impression that she might be digging for information or have any kind of ulterior motive?
((Sorry all! The end of break & the quarter brought in a flurry of work & grading))
Before speaking, I switch my detect thoughts over to Grilda, not probing deeper.
"Just looking to commiserate, mostly,"Incantis sighs as he motions for the barkeep. "Bad business about these Forsaken; it's scary, not knowing who's a mage and who's not. I've certainly caught the brunt of some undue suspicion. I wonder, an elder such as yourself must have heard community gripes about them. Anything you could share?"
Zhudala turns invisible and assumes her spider form and creeps into the back to investigate. She does her best to focus on where Incantis felt magic from.

For...saken, she asks, curious. Not sure who... oh, but your friend said that's the gang who have been burning down the city. Is that truly their name? Such a disgrace, and the Watch quite unable to deal with the threat. I certainly wish you and your friend well, if you plan to deal with them, and I'm sure the city will reward you handsomely. We're lucky that they haven't done much damage in this part of town, thank the gods.
Your Detect Thoughts spell reveals what's most on her mind, which is that she wishes her sister would hurry up and meet her, and she's uncertain why the strange young man is speaking to her. There's nothing to suggest she's hiding a big secret, and indeed what you and Dekhan learned from the man who directed you here was that the Grinning Lion is a good place for gossip about nobles, but not so much about criminal gangs.
I don't think Zhudala has any special abilities that would help her identify the magic that you sensed; she senses what you sensed, or rather she did (as both are concentration spells, only Detect Thoughts is still active. However, you can make a Perception check for both you and for Zhudala to try to notice something related...

Are you, perchance, privy to knowledge that might help us on our glorious quest?
