Strix places a flower crown on each of the childrens' heads and lets out a raucous shriek of approval.
"Kyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!"
It is not as subtle or unthreatening a noise as he might have intended. He sits across from the halflings, staff balanced across his knees, taking a dried ration from a foul smelling box in his pack and ripping off a chunk before he proffers the box around.
"Nice family. Nice cart. Friendly. Happy. Worries me. Where going, n' Why still alive?"
After two hours (should the situation have not changed) Varinth will wake with a start and be delighted with his surroundings.
Well Hello There. I'm sorry I don't remember getting here but a welcome sight here is. My name is Varinth but people call me Vaz.
Varinth will happily indulge in the hospitality of the Halflings, eyeing the wineskin occasionally but not partaking. If the children are still awake he will entertain them with some cantrips and if they wish, introduce them to Soodi, letting them feed her an onion.
If, however, things have gone pear-shaped, I will probably do something different...
Quick question, is Soodi the animal companion of one of the party or is the camel a part of the cart that we are taking to our destination? I've always wondered but kept forgetting to ask lol
The halfling children are delighted with their flower crowns, though they slip over their little heads and end up as necklaces instead. One of the children grabs something from Strix's box, but her mother deftly snatches it and returns it. She's a tender stomach, this one. Best not chance it, eh. The other halflings politely refuse Strix's offering, claiming that as this is their campsite, they are the hosts and must provide the food.
Where are we going, you ask Ullia responds. Well, to Neverwinter city up north; it's not so cold there as you'd think, or so they say. I guess you're coming from there, am I wrong? Simeon and I have found work at one of the new breweries there; that's what we do, you see. Many years of work in Waterdeep, serving halflings, gnomes, elves and other sorts too. But Neverwinter's growing fast, and it's a good position, a good opportunity.
The conversation goes on for a while; one of the halflings brings out a fiddle, and there are some songs and a chance to try some of the halflings' beer, their own brew they brought with them. After a while, the halflings go to their tents to sleep. Sadly, by the time Vaz awakens, almost everyone else is already sleeping peacefully.
Asher takes first watch, and watches from a distance as the halflings talk and eat and eventually turn in. There seem to be a few more clouds in the sky than before, but the watch passes uneventfully.
Asher wakes Scupper to take the second watch, just as Vaz wakes up over at the halfling camp where he fell asleep. The camp fire is still burning fitfully, and one of the halflings is standing watch for their group, and greets him politely before looking back to the wooden object he is carving.
Scupper, please re-roll a d20 for your Perception check.
If Strix wanted to continue the conversation further, or anyone else joined them to talk to the halflings, let me know and we'll add that in below.
If Asher would like to know more about Soodi, he'll probably need to ask Vaz. :)
Varinth apologizes to those awake when he stirs. Bleary eyed and a little ill he then tends to Soodi before taking to his bedroll hoping to dream of nothing, guilt and embarrassment wafting off him like steam.
Asher, you would have noticed that Soodi (Varinth's mount/companion/friend/camel) has nothing to do with the cart. At this point the two horses that pull the cart are still not sure what Soodi is and are skittish around her. Soodi is a one hump camel. I'm in the process of drawing her and will post a picture soon.
Got it, I thought that Soodi was tied to Varinth, but I wasn't 100% sure. I feel like it would have been noticeable if someone was favoring the camel, and Asher was one of the first 3 to arrive I believe and I can't remember if Vaz was before or after, but if Vaz was after then he wouldn't seen the camel walk with Vaz.
Scupper's second watch and Strix's third watch are just as peaceful; neither of you notice anything moving, either on the road or in the surrounding countryside.
Dario, with careful work your deer will yield around 40 pounds of meat; uncooked, the meat should last until the following evening; if you cook it now, it might go another two or three days without spoiling.
If Dario can before he goes into his trance and before taking third (and fourth if needed) watch he would like to ask one of his companions if they don't mind taking over cooking some of the meat so we have some rations for later.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
I can attempt to cook the meat, unless someone is proficient in cooking utensils. If no one is, I can do it: idk what check it would be: standard d20 roll: 18 however, if someone else volunteers or has proficiency in cooking utensils then Asher does not use this roll and it shall be void!
Asher, you do a good job of cooking before and during your watch, and Dario is an experienced hunter accustomed to eating what he kills or forages himself. Between you, you make 30 rations of cooked venison, which should stay edible for at least two days. You can certainly carry that much on the wagon, but will not be able to eat it all in time. You might be able to sell it in Phandelin when you get there, you don't know. But you don't have the means at hand to prepare it so that it becomes durable trail rations.
Dario takes the fourth and final watch; you can make a new Perception check if you wish, or I can take the 12 from earlier. There's certainly nothing dangerous out there tonight, and your watch ends without disruption; you also don't notice anything in particular.
It's before sunrise; the halflings are not yet stirring, though one of them, a young woman, is sitting at the remains of their campfire, keeping watch and whistling a tune.
Strix lies awake a while, listening to the song, trying to place the melody and then seeing if he can mimic it - his own voicebox is a mess of mammalian folds and avian membranes that is ideally suited to neither speech nor song, but can make some interesting noises with practice.
Eventually he sets about preparing for the days travel, meditating to make his peace with the beast and renew his pact with Tempus.
Do we need to forage for breakfast? If so what's the skill? 6 +5 for Survival, -1 for investigation or Nature etc.

I figured I just stick with the 12 roll.
Dario watches the sun come up while listening to the halfling's tune. The bright sun rays warm his copper skin and as he gets up he stretches his body out toward the blue morning sky. Dario walks over to the cart, takes some venison, and goes to the camp fire and starts to cook up some breakfast for his companions. As he cooks he watches Strix slowly awake. "Beautiful morning. Another fine day for traveling, don't you think?" Dario asks.
While cooking Dario keeps an eye out for those riders from yesterday and any other suspicious movements.
Strix, as the halfling woman whistles well and repeatedly, you're able to learn the melody without any trouble. If you choose to forage, you can do so before you set off and during the trip. Over the course of the morning, you are able to find a good amount of food, mostly in the form of berries, wild roots, and the occasional rabbit you can catch with a thrown handaxe; roll 1d6 plus your Wisdom modifier for the equivalent in rations that you get.
Dario, as you are finishing of your breakfast preparations, most of the halflings are stirring and they begin to cook their own breakfast; it appears to be a more lavish affair than your own, and they might not be moving on for another hour at least. There are no signs of any other travellers on the road, at least not during the time before the group sets off.
What would the group like to do next?
If you set off with the wagon, could you please confirm who is driving, who is walking in front, who is behind, and who is riding on the wagon, and can I get Perception checks from anyone looking out for trouble and an Animal handling check from the driver.
"Don't have tent. Any day better for traveling than staying put. But prefer this day to wind and hail, yes!"
The monk wanders off the road, returning later croaking the halfling tune, laden with 4 lbs of nuts and berries and a particularly savagely mauled... I think it was a rabbit? It's just blood, meat and fur now... which he offers to the party and the halflings before they set off.
Unless for any reason Dario doesn't want to, I'll leave him to take point as the specialist and cover the back - since smell would not be Strix's strongest sense maybe he's less likely to get second-hand-wasted from Vaz's fumes? :)

Dario licks the venison of his fingers as he watches Strix return to the camp with a pulverized rabbit and shakes his head. Dario stands erect from the fireplace and walks over to the cart and checks on the contents, making sure everything is secure. He reaches for his waterskin and takes a long pull from the nozzle, allowing water to trickle down his face and chest. He follows with a big sigh and smile and looks around his compatriots. "If it's not trouble to anyone, I'll take the lead again," Dario says.
As the group gets ready to head out to their destination Dario takes lead point with his long bow ready and arrow notched.
"Dario keeping watch in the front should be fine. I will follow your lead." Asher once again takes the reigns. "Another day of travel. Scupper, if you have another story, It would surely help pass the time. However, I know you may not wish to divulge all of your history of piracy with a new group such as us."
Strix places a flower crown on each of the childrens' heads and lets out a raucous shriek of approval.

Scupper tries to sleep through the fiddle playing and halfling merrymaking and takes on 2nd watch, more at ease with his kin asleep and quiet.
Not sure why everyone expects halflings to be jolly little bundles of fun, savin' that so many of the wee shites are.
