Scupper watches the goings on with half interest, though deer certainly sounds better than rations. Still, that rider has him perplexed and he wonders if they were riding quickly to somewhere or away from something. Ye know Asher, as one wanders the world ambushing those what don't pay attention and making a living taking what others have got, I've developed more than a healthy sense of the paranoia as to when it's likely to happen to me. Call it forethought towards Karma if ye like. Noneswise, I can't get that rider off me mind. D'ye think he looked distressed? Scupper keeps an eye out for places up ahead that he'd think would make good traps, chokepoints, or well defended placements for highwaymen.
I can go with Perception (unless you feel something else more appropriate for the knowledge of piracy) 15 Perception (+2 for Proficiency Bonus)
You make good speed, and find no signs of ambush or other danger. As dusk is approaching and you are thinking of stopping to make camp, you come upon an old, faded signpost pointing east; this is the start of the Triboar Trail that leads east towards Phandalin and your destination. You notice that there is already a small camp near the trail's head; two small wagons and about eight figures moving around. They look to be halflings or gnomes, you're not sure from this distance. You could approach and make your camp next to theirs, or head up the Triboar Trail another twenty minutes or so and then stop.
In preparation for making camp, please give me a watch order - same four periods as before. Yes, as elves only need to meditate for four hours, not the full eight, could I ask the elves to indicate which two (consecutive) watch periods they will be meditating; at other times, when not actively on watch, I will assume you are engaged in light activity such as reading or cleaning your equipment, and will bear that in mind for passive perception checks.
Well Lads and Lady, shall we make camp and get that shtag to the flames? We could introduce ourshelves to the wee folk and perhapsh get some potatoes to go with it! I like em *hic* they make me feel tall.
Without waiting for an answer, Varinth and Soodi slowly clop towards the Halfling Camp.
Varinth, if asked, is happy to take first watch, as he believes waking him up once he falls asleep may be difficult. Should people vocalize their dubiousness of his ability to keep watch in his current condition, he will heartily agree. 6 more cups of wine down.
As Soodi slowly clomps toward the encampment, Varinth is mumbling something about potatoes. He drifts off for a moment and stares at the stars. With a sudden jerk he comes back to life and screams powerfully "COWARD!!". There is a pause. Soodi stops. Varinth slides off and hits the ground with a thud. Unconscious.
Please advise damage dice to roll for a fall from a camel. Soodi is 2m tall.
Dario tries to stop Val from wandering into the Halfing camp, but the drunk camel ride is too quick for Dario to stop without making a scene. Dario shrugs his shoulders and lifts the dead duck from the back of the cart and walks over to tree with a sturdy branch. Using his rope from his bag he ties the hind legs of the buck, throws the other end of the rope of the thick branch, and then lifts the buck in the air and ties off the rope. Dario takes out his dagger from its sheath, starts to field dress the buck. As he field dresses the buck he looks up at Scupper and Asher and says "I'll take the third watch if you two want to take the first two."
That should say dead buck not duck!
After he finishes he takes a step back and wipes his dagger onto his leather pants and places it back in its sheath. Dario turns to Strix and hears his suggestion. "Good idea about the high ground." Dario takes out his long bow and notches and arrow and follows Strix to the high ground.
Getting nearer, you can make out fairly easily that they are all halflings; five adults and three children, probably a family travelling together.
As Soodi comes close to the camp, one of the halfling children notice her and begin to shout excitedly; it appears that the oldest one has seen a camel before and is quickly explaining to the two smaller children what it is. One of the adult halflings shouts a greeting, having only noticed Vaz so far: Hello traveller. Would you care to join us? At this point, with Soodi still twenty feet from the camp, Vaz tumbles from the camel's back, landing in an undignified heap on the grass. Two of the halflings stand up in alarm and rush towards him, with the others all looking on.
With the halflings' attention diverted by the camel and its drunk rider, Dario and Strix are easily able to circle the camp through the grass and dips in the ground. (You each notice that you are both very skilled at this). From your position, you are now able to see that the wagons are piled high with trunks and furniture - used, not new, suggesting these are personal possessions. You don't smell anything that worries you; to the contrary, there appears to be some pleasant-smelling stew cooking in the pot over the campfire. No-one has noticed you, or seems likely to given the scene playing out elsewhere.
Dario and Strix didn't need it, but yes, a drunk man riding, then falling from a camel is an effective distraction.
There's no falling damage from two metres; it starts from 10ft, which is about three metres.
Strix looks for any sign of belongings that don't belong - weapons, clothing or furniture designed for larger creatures than halflings, for example - or tracks/drag marks that suggest that there may have been previous kerfuffles. He also eyes those trunks - if they're packed for travel they'd normally be strapped shut or locked - do they look openable from the inside?
(If yes, let this play out and attack from shadows if necessary)
If not, he signals to Dario that maybe the Ranger should stay hidden just in case, then circles back to closer to the camel and steps out of the grass leaning heavily on his staff as if injured, feigning rebuckling his trews as if he were off the road answering natures call and declaring "Fool Vaz! You have fallen again! Little strangers, *cough* My thanks if help pick Winebag up. Tsk tsk."

Dario stays close to Strix and is impressed with his movements through the foliage. As they get close to the Halfing's camp he watches Strix eyes scan's their belongings and watches as Strix's eyes lock onto the trunks. Dario wants to stop Strix from going to test to the trunks, but besides it's not his place to stop someone he barely knows. For all Dario knows, Strix has his reasons, which Dario tries not to judge. Dario keeps back in the foliage and covers Strix, thinking that he'd rather keep this one companion alive than be working this job one man down. Dario also keeps an eye on Vaz as well and his camel Soodi.

Asher replies to Scupper's earlier comments about paranoia with the rider. "Something did seem quite off about that rider, however, without any justified reason to act on it, we will just have to settle for weariness, my friend. However, rest assured, should we come to blows, I do believe we shall be fine."
As we settle down for camp: "Varinth, you might not want to take first watch, given your affinity for drinking on the road. You might not be the best watchman in your current state. Take some time, maybe you can take last watch after you've sobered up. I will take the first watch if no one objects." If Asher does indeed take the first watch: Perception: 12. If Asher sees a rider that looks in any way familiar to the rider that passed them earlier, he tries to pay close attention.
Also, as you could tell, I did not post much yesterday. My real life D&D group meets on Tuesday nights so I didn't really have any time to check the forum. I know the DM has already said as long as you respond in 2 days we're good. I was just letting you guys know that Tuesday nights, I won't be active, if at all.
The trunks, boxes and furniture on the halflings' carts show signs of the knocks and bumps of the journey, but nothing more. They are all halfling sized. The trunks are mostly packed to bursting - they are held closed by straps, and clothing or other fabrics seem almost to be leaking out.
The lead pair of halflings reach Vaz; Are you injured, sir? They quickly ascertain that Vaz is okay, and at this distance the smell of cheap alcohol on Vaz's breath is unmistakable; their concern turns to amusement, and they help Vaz gingerly to the campfire where they sit him down; one of the children giggles as Vaz flops to the ground, his limbs splayed in all directions.
One of the other halflings responds to Strix: Please, sir, will you join us as well. At this point, he appears to notice your wagon and the rest of the group except Dario. Your friends too. All are welcome at our hearth, or in this case, campfire. Come, my name is Simeon, and this is my wife Ullia; he introduces you both to the rest of his family, and invites you all to sit.

Well isn't this jest a pot full o' piss. Feckin' halflings. Probably making a lovely stew if that delightfully sickening smell is what I think it is. May the gods fill me with maggots and go fishing! Scupper makes to create a bit of a 'nest' in the cart among the cargo. Ifn' you don't mind Asher, I'll stay with the cart in case there's bandits about. If you head over there, do let the rest of our group know I'll have a first watch on here. Wouldn't want those friendly little shites to provide some evildoer with an unintended distraction and keep us from our duty. If you head over, I'd hope you'd do me the courtesy of not mentioning me to the halflings.Scupper makes a small meal of rations for himself. With that buck going to the tea party, I'm sure no one will mind me havin' at the rations tonight.
Scupper spends his watch continually staring at the camp of halflings, muttering invectives and curses under his breath, and generally (in his distraction) being useless at his watch until he falls asleep.
Just as a point of order, Asher already rolled a perception for the first watch.
Asher is weary of the "merriment" of the halflings. "I dunno friend," he says to Scupper. "First we get these flower crowns, then we have a watchful rider, now we happen upon these halflings that offer us hospitality. I've spent most of my life in the cities and nothing like this has ever happened and ended well. I will stay with you and the cart."

Dario stays hidden in the foliage and watches as Strix and Val interact with the Halfing. He also notices Scupper as he creates his own little Halfling home in the cart and Asher who also watches the Halfling from within the cart.
He is unsure of the situation and decides to stay hidden in the foliage where he feels safe and grab a quick four hour of mediation in. When he awakes from his meditative state Dario checks his surroundings to make sure nothing wrong has befallen his fellow adventures.
Strix jogs back to the front, nodding to the cart passengers.
"Cardio. *Puff*. Good for eyes. *Huff* Just as well."
