Varinth, please make a Survival check as you attempt to find decent quantities of firewood. Sadly, you don't learn anything new about your wounds from looking at them.
The party takes a short rest in the small camp near the trail. You are not disturbed, and are able to get a good rest and recover some health if you wish. You are not, however, able to engage in interrogation during the rest, so you leave the unconscious Redbrand sleeping on the ground for an hour. Scupper dumps the four dead Redbrand corpses in a pile in the middle of the camp area.
Strix, when the rest is over, you gently slap the Redbrand prisoner awake. He is still tied up in ropes and chains, so he struggles for a moment by quickly gives up. He looks up at you angrily. You're in a shitload of trouble. Just wait... He falters as he hears Incantis' voice in his head. Look, I'm not going to do anything stupid. Maybe, um, maybe we can work something out. He nervously looks at each of you in turn, as he has no way of knowing whose voice he heard. When Dekhan grabs him and demands that he tell you what he knows, he seems afraid: Okay, okay. Please. Just. I don't know. What do you want to know?
(He seems co-operative, if you have some specific questions)
Varinth, despite this hilly territory not being particularly well populated with trees, you nevertheless get extremely lucky and find a couple of large dead trees that are crumbling away and provide a good quantity of dry firewood suitable for burning. This takes about an hour, during which you do not get a short rest; however you can take a rest while the others are conducting the interrogation, if you wish.
Varinth makes a pyre next to the pile of dead Redbrands. He also places a flask of oil in front of the unlit fire should the lads (and lass) need to light the fire while Vaz rests his eyes for a moment, his side throbbing.
"My powers should prove quite useful in that endeavor"...Incantis steps forward, projecting his mind into the Redbrand's when he awakens. "Remember us? You caused us quite the trouble, trouble you'll be in if you don't turn around help us. What do you say? I'm quite the reasonable person but my companions can be quick to anger."
puppy wake! Questions, yes. Deadbrands. Where? Why? How many?
The Redbrand looks confused, and takes a moment to answer. Um, I, um, I don't know. You killed. Oh Gods. He throws up, but as he can't move, the vomit just falls on his chest and he gasps, struggling to speak. After a moment, he continues. Ten more, I guess. Back in the manor. Under the manor. He looks at Dekhan. Can I have some water?
Dario avoids taking a short rest and instead aids Vaz in finding wood and starting a fire (OOC - I would roll, but Vaz his the sweet spot with that 21). Dario also avoids the interrogation and decides to scout the around to ensure they are secure while they short rest and interrogate. While scouting around the perimeter he thinks back to a time when he used to interrogate orcs along the Misty Forest. Remembering the sounds the orcs made as he ripped their nails from their fingers or shoved hot pokers in their eyes and anuses, sends a shiver down his spine.

Vaz'll give you all ye want te drink in a bit, Scupper says with a knowing smile. Where's this manor and who's in charge o ye lads? I'm guessing someone leads yer group here. Who's running the outfit at the Lost Mine? Is the Black Spider there or does he have one o you lot keeping security there? Where's the dwarf? How many have you got doing forced labor at the mine? Why does the corpse star move about the sky? Are there simple ways te learn magic. Have ye met me mother? What's yer favorite dish here in Phandelver? Who's the toughest Redbrand? Why does it snow? What's yer name? Tell me again about the Black Spider.

Zoria taps Vaz's shoulder. "Is the halfling always this frenetic?"
The Redbrand spits out the rest of the vomit, and starts to answer Scupper's first question: I... but then cuts off as the flow of questions continues. He is looking bewildered and scared, and you're not quite sure if he's following everything you ask. When you come to the end, he looks at you with resentment, fear and anger in his eyes; he is not used to being helpless, and he's taking time to adjust to his new circumstances.
The manor in the east part of town. It's a ruin, but there's a dungeon underneath. We use that. The boss is Glasstaff, but yeah, we're being paid by someone who calls himself Black Spider. Or herself, maybe. I don't know anything about that. Maybe Glasstaff does. I don't know about no mine, no star, no magic, none of that bullshit. He looks up; it seems that talking has brought a bit of fire back into him. That all you got? Where's my water?
Scupper, you get the sense that he's keeping some things back; maybe there are some questions on that long list that he didn't understand or didn't know, but maybe also some things that he doesn't want to answer.
No patrols. No passwords. We got our boot on this town's scrawny neck, and they all know it. We haven't had a peep from these peasants. Until you come along. How many are you? Six? Seven? Not enough. Your best bet is to let me go, then run off and hide in the hills for a few months.
Zoria steps forward, "I believe he also asked you for your favorite dish here in Phandelver!" She holds back a smile that shows she thinks this is fun.

Dekhan pours a cup of water from his Waterskin and moves as if to offer it to the Redbrand but then splashed it into his face, refills the cup and takes a sip. Listen well, cur, the boot is on the other neck now. If you wish to see tomorrow you will go beyond being cooperative, tell us what we want to know and what you think we might want to know, who is Glasstaff, how many do you number, how can we get into this fort. Dekhan’s eyes begin to smolder. Answer these questions or by all that I hold dear you will not walk free under the sun again. intimidation 14
In case you haven't noticed, we're all jest a bit tired o' having tings done the hard way. I've heard townsfolk gone missing. Slaves for the mine? Miner supply store seems to get along well enough with you lot too...selling mining tools? Maybe you haven't heard o' the Lost Mine but it's gone by other names as well. Echo Cave and the like. Tell us what brought you here. The Black Spider and Glasstaff aren't in the business of jest bullyin' townsfolk. So why're ye here and not guardin' the mine...
Glasstaff - he's the boss. Took over a few months ago. He's a wizard, all right? Dangerous. Mean. But smart, too. Smart enough to turn the last leader to ashes, at any rate. Dekhan, you can tell your intimidation is working on him. There's ten more, like I said. And it's easy enough to get there; just go through the cellar of the manor. No-one's guarding that door, not that I know of. That might change, though. We'll be missed. They'll come for you. You need to run.
Once again, he seems to get a bit braver as he talks. To Scupper he says: Oh, sure, these peasants'll make good slaves, maybe get us a decent price. No mine, though, not that I've heard of. Not down below the manor. Only mines around here are the ones up there; he nods up the trail towards the mountains and away from town; and the poor sods who pick through those empty holes. Grubbing in the dirt for a few coppers' worth. That's no way to live.
Look, we're just here to keep the town nice and quiet and not causing anyone any trouble. Maybe there's some lost mine. Maybe that's what the Spider cares about. We don't care. We stay here, we have our fun, we get paid. Got it? Look, he speaks to Zoria now, you have to make them see reason. My buddies are coming to look for me. If you let me go, I'll say you just dumped me here and headed west. Then you can head east. I'm your best hope now.
Scupper, with your insight, it's pretty clear that he's desperately trying to appeal to whoever in the party he things might be a soft touch; first he thought that was Dekhan, now Zoria. You also get the sense that while everything he says is technically true and he really doesn't know anything about the mine, there are still things he's holding back.

If it's permitted to tag in and out of the interrogation so we can all squeeze in a rest, Strix will meditate for a bit. Hit die 1 8 and roll 2 3
