OOC: I wish I could have responded to Ivanchina's post sooner but such is the way with life and PbP games. So you will all have to bear with a little history revisions.
As Thieven begins to climb the stair he feels the magic course through him, gently searching his thoughts and feelings. Suddenly he feels the magic coil around his chest and gut. He tries to cry out but the sound is choked before it is made. One of the gemstones suddenly flashes brightly and Thieven his hit in the chest by three bolts of invisible force. He is hurled backward off of the stair toward Lebenha (Lebenha please make me a Dexterity saving throw). Thieven hits the floor hard after taking 10 points of force damage.
What do you wish to do?

As for me, I choose to believe that an extinct thunder lizard is running a game of Dungeons & Dragons via Twitter!
The problem with riddles is the words are often symbolic in nature and not literal. Thieven will need to have someone attend to him or he will need to make 3 successful death saving throws to stabilize.
Lebenha's successfully avoids being struck by the falling Thieven.

(ooc) Yeah but at the end, you as a person designed the riddle, and we, have to ponder is he thinking literally or not? and its totally up to you. The other way should be feasible at the same time. You gave the sense to the riddle and we have to guess on you..its not so easy, you know what I mean. You could say, you are dumb, its not my problem, yes but even dumbs deserve to play fair, I think that the real problem is on game mechanics.
At the end, this has been just an evasion to speak about this kind of adventure's threat in D&D. Its not about our PbP or you, and, its not related to Thieven' fate. Its a 1st level character I can shortly create a new one in case.

Let me know dears if someone try stabilize Thieven, otherwise I gonna roll for death save.
Leb kneels over Thieven checking if he breathes or not.
"I don't know there's a lot of blood here " she says trying to stop the bleeding. She rips Thieven's clothes, taking advantage that they are already ripped and she tries to bandage him.
Asgar descends down to be ready to give Leb a hand stabilising Thieven. He puts his hand on her shoulder "Don't worry Lebenha, you've got this. Your friend will be alright..." He takes a look at Thieven. How bad does he look?

I don't think any of you are dumb, quite the contrary I have actually remarked to my wife that you have been a very clever group. I would say that you were rash in making your decision about the stairs. There was very little discussion about the riddle or the various possibilities to what it could mean. Which so far, is different from what you guys have done. I did try to drop a few hints and I did give you a couple of clues albeit subtle ones that did require a bit more focused investigation. However, I can't make it too easy or it wouldn't be worth any experience points, and yes I do give XP for things other than combat.

(Just trying to piece this out, I'm torn between the "Armor right, weapons left" theory and actually having it break down by class. It mentions smarts and skill to one side, arms and armor to the other (paraphrasing here). What if the rogue and cleric (proven) go to one side while the ranger and druid cover the other? At this rate, the only untested class is my own. Otherwise, if it is class-based, there's a 50-50 chance for me and we know which side Thievan can ascend.
Alternative theory: it could be based on highest stat. Mental to one side, physical to the other? This is a groundless theory at the moment as I need to re-read the riddle.)

With the assistance of Lebenha and Asgar, Thieven manages to become stable but still unconscious. The three of you may now leave Thieven and attempt to climb one of the staircases, take some time to discuss the riddle and see if you can come up with a solution, retreat with Thieven back to Poffer's farmhouse and regain your strength, or try something else. What do each of you want to do?

"I could stay behind with Thieven, and make sure he's alright while the rest of you try to explore further? If we still want to do this today? Or maybe we should just bring Thieven back to Poffer's, and let him recover while we try to make heads and tails out of all this? No matter what, I will not leave him behind by himself in this condition. He's your friend, Lebenha, what do you think?"

Ooc: my bad - I had missmatched the names in my notes ;)
"What do you two think we should do? Why didn't the gems harm me, but they wounded Thieven? I felt like something probed my mind and heart... Terrible idea, but maybe I should try and ascend the same staircase, but this time with my gear...? Godsdammit! Why does it always have to be riddles!? I hate riddles! Okay calm down, Albrech, your new comrades here got it..." Asgar looks to Leb and Alerian. "You've got this right? You've figured it out?"

Lebenha calms down when she sees that most of the bleeding is stoped and that Thieven breathing becomes normal. She uses some of the water on her waterskin to clean his face from blood and to wash her hands, still trembling.
She sits with her back to the wall, resting his arms on her knees and closes her eyes for a moment.
She open her eyes and while Alarien and Asgar talk about their options, looking at the stairs, then she take another look to the bringands dead on the floor, then again to the stairs.
" I think we got it totally wrong. " she says interrupting the conversation between his companions as it never had existed. " It's not about the weapons we carry. It's about us, about the choices we made in our lifes and how we face the problems in life. " she pauses for a moment. "You Asgar rely on your armor and weapons and faith to overcome problems. You are Armor and Might. I prefer to talk around fights, and life by my wits... I should be deft and wits. So when it's safe for one person to climb up one set of stairs, it is not for another who's choices in life are different. If instead of Thieven it would be me who entered the stairs it would be me lying there. " she says that last sentence more to herself than her friends.
"Let's test it " says the young woman standing up and heading for the opposite set of stairs that Asgar climbed. She hesitates for a moment then steps up with one foot, then another, then another one
"Hope you are right you idiot " she says to herlsef.
[Sorry guys work had been killing this past weeks. Can we take a short rest after Leb's try of her hyphotesis at Thieven's side, so we can all could gather ourselves. If we do she will spent a HD to recover the last (and hopefully only) 2 HP lost during the fight.]
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Clever girl! Lebenha's begins to climb the stairs and feels the magic test and probe her heart and thoughts. She becomes unsteady for a moment but reaches the top of the stairs safely.
And her wits and guts have earned her Inspiration.
Okay here is the situation the way I have it. Alarien, Asgar, & Thieven used their HD on the last short rest. Thieven and Asgar are out of spell slots. Thieven is unconscious but stable and will require 4 hour(s) to regain consciousness and return to 1 HP.
(Well, I think Alerian is more of the stalker type than one to enter pitched, heavy combat, so he will follow Leb.)
Alerian stands by the foot of the stairs as Leb climbs, ready to catch a falling body. Uncertain which stair to take, Alerian reluctantly follows Leb, "What's the worst that could happen..." A quick glance at Thievan provides a ready reminder.
