Well, Barnaby, that's disturbing news, I'm sure the Count is adept at getting his hooks into whomever he wishes and our young friend seems a likely and vulnerable target, we'll have to watch that. I also worry that the pup is just a way for the Count to keep eyes on us.
So here we are in Valaki, which seems a bit more secure than that dumpster fire Barovia, but the Count is just outside the walls apparently. Ireena's path is her own, but Krezk seems like a better refuge for her and lacking any other course I would see her there if she wishes.
Lucento, sorry to bring you into this drama, but things are what they are (I'm assuming Lucento is sitting with us, if I'm wrong ignore this bit)Have you experience in matters of the undead, as we've seen much of it in this area, including this Count, who has shown powers a normal man wouldn't have (Kif shudders remembering the Count turning into smoke and coming up to the second story of that house in Barovia)
Anyway, I think my intention for now would be to watch howFope's interaction pans out then go to sleep and perhaps check out the town in the morning to see if we can get more info and better direction ( Kif stifles a yawn of exhaustion)
Barnaby gives Kif inspiration for the thoughts on the wolf pup, and then, belly full of warm food, moves to the corner and quietly casts detect magic as a ritual. He will then check for any hanky pinky going on with Revenge. While he’s at it he looks around the tavern for any other arcane auras in the room.
Make a sleight of hand check for the spell, and a Perception check for looking at Revenge.
The only magic you detect in the room is magic coming off of a couple of trinkets that Fope's companion is wearing: his hat, and a ring.
My name is Rictavio. I am sorry to report that I've only been here a few months. I wonder if I even know as many stories as you do about Barovia? But here we are. I will tell you this, though. I have met the most fascinating man in town. Blinsky, is his name. He makes the most interesting and charming toys. Maybe you will like them, too? His dolls are so lifelike, sometimes they seem to move a bit out of the corner of your eye. Very impressive. My monkey is staying with him! True story.
When I was younger, of course, there was an *extraordinary* toy maker. Not here, in Barovia. Far away, in Pistoras, not far from where I grew up. He was a woodworker, he was, and he made the most amazing little puppets. Not toys, like the wonderful Blinsky. No, this man - Yoputto, was his name - made elaborate wooden puppets. He was so desperate for companionship (his wife had died, you see), that he went to see a local wizard . . .
Rictavio tells an entertaining story about Yoputto, and his wooden puppet that was brought to life. He thanks you for the wine and heads off to his own bed, upstairs.
The sleeping arrangements upstairs are one large common room, with several beds. One small common room, with just two beds. There is a separate private room as well, which appears to be Rictavio's. He goes into it and locks the door. There don't appear to be any other guests staying at the inn this evening.
Fope, you may try to sneak Revenge upstairs (or whatever), or you may do as requested and let him sleep in the barn outside. You may sleep upstairs, and pay 5sp, or just sleep for free in the barn with Revenge.
Lucento, if you want to do something before everyone heads off to bed, just say so.
Everyone but Lucento (no offense!) make an INT check. On a 15 or higher, you remember this:
Mary has kept her beloved daughter, Gertruda, secured in this house since she was little. You gather that her daughter is a teenager, and Mary fears that she ran off and that something terrible has befallen her. She shows you the doll she is gripping in her fingers, it had been Mary's and then was passed down to Gertruda, and you examine it. The malformed doll has a strange leer and wears a sackcloth dress. Stitched into the hem of its dress is a frayed tag bearing the words “Is No Fun, Is No Blinsky!” It looks like the tag has always been attached to the doll, maybe signifying an expression, or the craftsperson who made it or something like that.
Lucento eagerly finishes his wine as a smile breaks across his face, and the worry that had occupied his expression since entering the town dissipates. A toy maker, hm?
He walks to the bar, and his smile breaks a little wider as he waves to the woman behind the counter. "A nightcap, miss?"
Lucento pays for his drink, and glides upstairs to a bed that Kif has so graciously rented on his behalf.
Edit: Blinsky...Blinsky...Blinsky...where did I hear that before...Ah...Yes...The missing girl from Barovia. She had a doll. It had a tag that suggested it was made by this Blinsky fellow. We should go by his shop tomorrow. Perhaps we may learn something. After all, she never let the girl leave the house, so the only thing she knows about the outside world might be her Blinsky doll. Well, interesting anyway.
when the day breaks Kif will rise, do some stretches and soldierly exercises. Then he will go downstairs
To whomever seems to be waiting tables: Please, I am famished, there's been much work and wounds and very little respite for me lately, might I have a plate of eggs, with ham and cheese, a rasher of bacon, perhaps a few sausages, some juice, toast and a cup of coffee that stays full until I'm done drinking it.
Well, since there's no one at the in enjoying a fine breakfast perhaps we should head out on the town, perhaps visit the church. Churches are usually good places to go in undead country
Exploring the town, the party makes its way back toward the square it passed through the night before.
It’s another overcast day, but now you can clearly make out some of the area shops: a small blacksmith, a general goods store; there is a young woman selling pastries from a cart.
In the town square you see laborers taking down the last of a familiar decoration: wolf heads on pikes. Men at arms are digging them out of the ground and dumping the wolf heads into a cart.
Lucento descends the stairs to join Kif, and upon seeing the kitchens cold and empty, lets out a marked sigh.
“Well that’s a disappointment.” He says as he looks over to Kif who seems on the brink of outrage. “Sorry if I’ve been tight lipped these past few hours, but a great deal has happened and I’m still perplexed by my being here in the first place. I’ve not heard of this Count you referred to, but a “man” who can transmute himself into a whiff of smoke might also be able to transport others in a cloud of fog. I’m speculating, but it seems there’s plenty of cause for concern.”
“It seems like this toymaker may be of importance to your questions; maybe exploring that lead will reveal some answers to mine.”
Kif buys a couple pastries, Say miss, delicious generic pastry item you have here. Would there be a place about to get some coffee? If you don't mind I have a couple questions, I have a neice with a birthday coming up, would there be a toymaker in town? also what's up with the wolf heads, We got in late last night and I seem to recall there was some sort of festival?

Føpé will sleep outside. Bade experiences with large buildings lately and what not.
Intelligence check: 1
Edit: The beer appears to have gone to his head.
There is a 4-stall stables attached to the inn. One of the stables is occupied by a horse; you and Revenge are free to occupy one of the others.

Ah, a toymaker, great...
Kif goes to bed
Sounds good. I wanted to let Lucento catch up, and I'll retcon things as necessary if he does. I'll turn the page to the next day tonight or tomorrow.

Sounds good. Everybody takes a well-deserved night’s rest after a long trial the day and days before.
Vallaki is yours. What would you like to do?

You recall that somebody told you, the night before, that the kitchen is closed and the bar unstaffed until noon.
I hate this town and wish it burnt to the ground, not even a continental breakfast, dammit
Heh.
I remind you that you have long term goals, short term goals, and clues about places to check out. Not even counting Ireena.
I will leave you to it.
LOL
