“Most certainly a threat as I agree with Kif that he must have known of your father’s death. What about your sister? You say that a vampire has been expressing much interest in her. I’m afraid there is no good way to ask this, but, well, have you checked her for bite marks?”
She still resists, if that's what you mean. I do not know how much longer she can.
There is something going on, though I do not know what it is. There is something about Ireena that draws him. I've been training, he says, gesturing at all of his weapons, so that one day I may kill him. But for now I just need to get her away from here.
“Well, if you believe that there is a safer town in Barovia than this, I, for one, would be happy to head there with you. It might be best to get our bearings before taking on a full blown vampire.”
”I don’t suppose you know anything about the disappearance of Mary’s daughter? Puddin here, rightfully, has pointed out that her mothering tendencies could use some work, but if there’s a chance to help an innocent girl, it would be shameful not to try.”
General insight on the crap he’s laying down: 2
Edit: Italics: He seems to speak with the voice of god.
I hear that Vallaki is well-defended. I hope that my sister will be safe there, but I do not know for sure. As for Mary's daughter, people disappear often. Mary is afraid for good reason.
He appears to be a concerned brother, doing his best.
I should warn you that Ireena is not, umm, exactly waiting at the house with her bags packed. You might say. She can explain for herself when we get there.
You can now see, at the end of the street, a larger house that is likely your destination. Ask your last questions or deliver your last quips before you get there.
Well let's see if we can get you and your sister to Vallaki, I'll not rest easy under the shadow of that castle and if the best fare in town is that nasty crap at the tavern then I'm happy to see it behind me.
I'm pretty sure the Count's visit was a threat. He definitely meant to mess with us coming in the middle of the night as he did, despite his 'grace'.
I kinda got the feeling you are not a fan of the Vishanti either..do they work for the count? They certainly had a role in getting us to this valley but they seemed set on us defeating a devil
The Visanti, yes. They are the Count's. That is why they come and go as they please.
A weary-looking mansion squats behind a rusting iron fence. The iron gates are twisted and torn. The right gate lies cast aside, while the left swings lazily in the wind. The stuttering squeal and clang of the gate repeats with mindless precision. Weeds choke the grounds and press with menace upon the house itself. Yet, against the walls, the growth has been tramped down to create a path all about the domain. Heavy claw markings have stripped the once-beautiful finish of the walls. Great black marks tell of the fires that have assailed the mansion. Not a pane nor a shard of glass stands in any window. All the windows are barred with planks, each one marked with stains of evil omen.
Roll a perception check. If you get an 11 or higher, read the following:
You see trampled weeds all around the mansion as well as scores of wolf paw prints and human footprints.
Ismark knocks on the door in a brief code, and you hear a woman's voice. They exchange a few words, probably another code, and then there's some rattling, some sliding of wood, and the door opens.
The interior of the mansion is well furnished, yet the fixtures show signs of great wear. Noticeable oddities are the boarded-up windows and the presence of holy symbols in every room. The burgomaster is in a side drawing room on the floor—lying in a simple wooden coffin, likely homemade, surrounded by wilting flowers and a faint odor of decay.
Ireena herself is a strikingly beautiful young woman, with red hair and a proud figure. You can see her for yourself in Roll20.
Roll a perception check. If you get a 14 or higher, read this:
The two really don't look like brother and sister. It occurs to you that at least one of them may be adopted.
Ireena peers down at the three of you curiously. She is not exactly gawping, in that there is clearly a brain working behind her eyes, but she clearly doesn't know what to make of you. Ismark? Are these people going to help us bury father?
“Hello Ireena. This is Kif and Puddin, and I am your humble servant Barnaby. We have come to aid this town in what ways we can. Apparently, from what your brother has just told us, we were like brought here under false pretenses. But, now that we are here, there seems little choice but to continue with our goal of ridding this lovely countryside of the evil that stains it.”
”My condolences on the death of your father. That said, it is a pleasure to meet you, though I am sorry for the circumstances.”
My sister will not leave until we have laid my father to rest. The other villagers shun her, because of Strahd's attachment. I cannot bring father to the chapel myself.
Ireena, after we have laid father to rest, it will be time to travel to Vallaki. Please make sure you are ready. I am going to prepare the cart.
Ismark steps deeper into the house, leaving you alone with Ireena. Feel free to ask her questions.
Ireena responds to Barnaby:
Thank you for the kind words. We will have to leave by mid-afternoon at the earliest. We have a little food, if you have not eaten.
She is being polite. Not unpleasant, but not friendly, either.
Bold: thank you Ireena for your hospitality. Perhaps a quick bite would be welcome while your brother sees to the cart. Is there anything we can help you with to get ready to go to the chapel or afterwards on to Vallaki
Puddin stares a moment at the woman, almost transfixed by her beauty.
Hello, Ireena very nice to meet you -- I'm Puddin. Under the Goddess Shar, please accept my deepest sympathies on the loss of your father. Those who follow Shar know a thing or two about pain and loss, but we use that pain to wield great power. If you're ever interested in doing so yourself, please let me know.
I gave up my possessions a long time ago when I accepted my role as a cleric and therefore lost all my skills in packing. Ireena, do you mind I investigate around the house? I believe your home may hold some good clues about Strahd and his minions.
Bold: thank you Ireena for your hospitality. Perhaps a quick bite would be welcome while your brother sees to the cart. Is there anything we can help you with to get ready to go to the chapel or afterwards on to Vallaki
She serves a little food, and you get the sense that there isn't much in the cupboard to offer. Bits of some stringy meat, probably some kind of small game, and a couple of seasonal vegetables. If others also ask, she will feed them too, but she is not offering to those who are not asking.
You may search the house. We have nothing to hide. My head is clouded when I try to remember when the Count visited; I don't really have much to say about it. As for my faith, in my family and in the village we worship the Morninglord and Mother Night. I do not know this Shar, but I am content with my own faith.
If you search the house, she follows you. Make an investigation check.
Barnaby, it's your sense that Ismark requires your help to get the coffin to the chapel (or wherever it's going), because he and his sister alone cannot do it, and because his sister's presence makes it unlikely that anyone else would help.
I'll be happy to help Ismark lay his father to rest and then get out of here. By the way , Barnaby, did you notice how different in aspect the two of them are? I wonder if there is more to the story there.
While he waits Kif spends some time sharpening his ax and making sure his gear is squared away, like any soldier would do
Ireena shows you around the mansion, Puddin. She does not interfere as you poke and prod.
There's a kitchen and a pantry without much in it. There is space downstairs for a dining hall, for a parlor, and some kind of a great hall. It looks like the great hall is not used at all The family, apparently, uses the parlor for its living space. There is also a small library, with nothing of particular interest.
Upstairs, there are a couple of smaller bedrooms, and a couple of larger ones. There are beds in three of the rooms, with sparse furniture in each. You find several stashes of coins: 9 gp hidden in a canister in the pantry downstairs, and a couple of hiding spots upstairs with a combined 24 gp (plus or minus some silver pieces and copper pieces in each). Let me know if you attempt to do anything with them, but Ireena is moving with you through the house, so I'm guessing not.
You don't find any indication of the coming or going of a vampire. You also don't find any indication that a vampire hasn't been here.
Kif, you follow Ismark through the kitchen and out a side door. He is fussing with the wheel of a cart; he has removed several spokes and is trying to gently hammer the metal rim to smooth it out. He looks up and sees you. I'm glad you're here! We have to leave by mid-afternoon to make sure we get there before dark, and this cart has not been used in a long time. It would be bad for it to break down on the way. Lend a hand?
Over the course of a few hours, you get the cart into good shape.
Barnaby, how are you occupying yourself? Going to the shop? Exploring the library in the mansion?
