Between the slashing axe and the burning bolt, the creature is staggered. Will Fope recover enough from the poisonous bite to finish the job? We will see.
The poison has seeped into Fope's veins, but he gathers himself sufficiently to finish off the injured giant bug.
You may try to rest in here. The banging, shaking, and falling dust will make a rest difficult, however.
If you want to try to have a short rest, you must either be of very calm mind, or hearty constitution, in order to get the benefits of that action. Make a CON save or a WIS save, up to you, in order to get the benefits of the rest. Ireena doesn't need it and will go along with the party's wishes.
If Tulip flies downstairs, she quickly discovers that the stairwell itself is shaking, and there is great and violent noise down in the basement as well. Is the monster still down there? Tulip is not even sure; it could be running up and down the halls and she wouldn't see it or hear it in the din, possibly until it was too late. Barnaby, perhaps watching and listening through her faculties, wisely summons her back upstairs. If she went at all.
That's a fail. I'm not going to tell you what to do, but I do believe you guys have some potions. You're welcome, also, to try a second rest if you find the first one did not refresh you. But rests take time.
Does the house appear to be breaking? Are boards snapping or bending in unhealthy ways? Were the outer walls of the houes wood or stone or something else? What about the wall of the stairwell? We have a magical ax. If it's a wooden wall, perhaps we could break through it close enough to ground level to escape without meeting more giant spiders or whatever other new evil has been summoned.
Kif has already signaled, by rolling the Constitution save, that he is attempting to take a short rest (though he is not getting the benefits of one), and he is therefore not prowling up and down the stairwell tapping on walls with his magic axe.
Roll an Investigation check, as you attempt to decipher what might actually be happening, based on what you're hearing.
Yup! Take a whole action, take the full value. I find that approach very sensible. Potions aren't cheap, and it's not so strange that it takes 6 seconds to drink one.
yeah, if we can get down to the next floor I think we can get to that big circular staircase and bolt outta here through the next few floors, we're too far up to try and bail out a window or wall hole, even if we have 50 feet of hempen rope
You are actually not sure, with that investigation roll, that the house is falling. Exactly. It is behaving violently, and in a way not consistent with the way large domiciles normally behave.
Fope may take advantage of the benefits he gets with a short rest.
You step into the narrow hallway and look into the room separating you from the stairs downward. You see before you a cloud of dust, and roof timbers swinging through the space and sometimes banging into the floor or a wall. They aren't falling, by which I mean that the ones that strike the floor lift back up, only to swing in some other direction. Basically, there are rafters swinging around this room.

12 to hit
8 damage
usually I'm ok with spiders, but in your case I'm making an exception
Attack: 10 Damage: 13
Misses!
The spider successfully does bite Fope this time. It does 11 damage, or 8 with a successful Con save.
Everybody go!
OK
14 attack
8 damage
Fire bolt: 16 to hit for 3 damage.

Constitution Save 12
Attack: 24 Damage: 15

We might rest easier in the basement if that creature has returned to its den. Barnaby, can your owl take a look?
Føpé wipes the spattered spider goo off his forehead.
Going back down those stairs is probably a bad idea, although it might be a good idea to make sure nothing is trying to sneak up on us
meanwhile 14 con save

And I'm gulping a potion, are we using the full value rule for healing potions? If so 10hp back on my board

Con save to recover a 2nd level spell slot: 17
Investigation to figure out what the heck is going on: 21
This place is shaking to bits. I'm not sure we should be taking a rest here. It might be time to vacate the premises.
Edit: Hoowah, I finally rolled some good numbers. :)
2nd Edit: Shoulda been a +2 on the con save, so it should have been an 18.

I will attempt a CON save on Fope's behalf, so we can move things along: 18.
