Not today Satan! screams Barnaby and then he recasts web in an advanced position laying the sticky gauze 5' deep on the ground. The boogaboos must make another DC 14 dex save or be restrained. Regardless, the area is difficult terrain. He then backs off the extent of his movement.
Ok. Because of that second web, and only because of that second web, I'll handwave the rest of the combat.
As the guards come after you, thrashing their way through the web as fast as they can, you hear them hollering. Get the fat one! You soon hear a wolf snarling, as well. Pretty soon, the hollering and snarling fades; it doesn't sound like they wanted to chase you very far.
It's now mid-afternoon. You can, if you hurry, get back to Vallaki by dusk. The only other indoor locations you know nearby are the remnants of the windmill and the remnants of Death House. You could also go back to the village of Barovia, if you want, but that would involve traveling at night (or camping in the wilderness).
So maybe a little above our paygrade, gents, we can just tell the Berdermeister and he can send troops, regular cannon fodder, or puppy chow. Maybe collect Ireena and move on?
(Ooc: I'm game for camping or heading to vallaki but I think if we try anything else we'll be as alive as if we'd stayed to fight. Casters are tapped.)
Chubs: Wine and an inn sounds like an excellent idea. Perhaps a short roadside rest when we've got some distance from those voracious vulpines, I'm not sure I can go too much farther without getting the chance to try and bind the gushing wound in my thigh.
Barnaby: Yes, yes, back to town. That was horrible. For the umpteenth time since setting out on this quest, Barnaby is wrapped up in his head wondering at what foolishness had convinced him that he could be a hero.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"*Or. Perhaps friend Chubs. Perhaps they weren't yelling about us at all? 'Get the fat one' could have been them yelling for reinforcements. Or asking for a calming side of ham to reassure them after facing our terrible might. It could have meant many things. We shouldn't make it about us.*"
Misalyk tries hard to put feeling into those words and not let the fear and exhaustion show.
Speaking of ham, shall we get dinner when we return?
I wonder if this soggy dreary place knows anything about cracklin's
Kif feels terrible about leaving but sees the strategic value in a withdraw given the sorry state of his friends and inability to really hurt the bad guys.
Assuming that there was opportunity for a short rest, Chubs will use 3 hit dice (and probably the fourth after seeing the result) for 25 healing. If there was not the opportunity, he is still at 4 hp.
Edit: Holy crap that's good. No need to use the fourth.
Second edit: Good thing he doesn't need the fourth, I went to record my used dice and realized I had already used one.
The party makes it back to Vallaki without further excitement, but it’s dusk. The guard lets you in without incident; now you are known in town. Feel free to discuss evening business, or do whatever. I encourage you sometime to check Madame Eva’s card reading, in case you encounter a clue.
(Ooc is the card reading something Misalyk can do?)
We were given card readings by a ***** lady shortly after arriving in the region. He is just suggesting that we go back and reread them to see if we find anything relating to what we've seen and done. If Misalyk didn't get a reading, then I'm thinking there is nothing he can do. As far as I know, since Chubs wasn't with us at the time of our arrival, he never got one, though he wasn't my character at the time, so I can't be sure.
The card reading appears under the first post in this whole thread. It speaks to our quest, treasure and helpers we may find along the way and our eventual final challenge. I'm not sure we've found more than the Ally know as the 'lesser' who is defending a village we were at previously. He tasked us with seeing his sister Ireena (seems like the count and or his mionions, including one in this very village, are very interested in her for some reason)to safety. She is hiding with the priest at his church in this village
Barnaby, did you go? Make sure you are all where you want to be on the map.
(Yes we should chose our graves carefully)

"I don't think the burgermeister will care much about something outside of his gates like this. Not unless it threatens the town."
Misalyk shudders remembering how fast Chubs fell and how close he was to death.
"Perhaps we go find an Inn and sleep and have wine and mourn the lost little ones."

Chubs, looking down with concern at his rounded belly: Which of us, do you think, is "the fat one"?

don’t worry chubs, given my short stature I am often misjudged as fat

"*I shall dine on sleep and sleeping and sleep!*"

The first post has some handy stuff in it.
