Let's go talk to the guy who sent us to the windmill. Let him know what we found. We could also check with the Burgomeister to see if the town will send a force after the werewolves to save the children.
You return to the inn to wash up and, perhaps, ask around about where to find Lord von Holt, when the tavernkeeper greets you with a wave. Here's a letter for ye, he says. Came in when we opened up early this afternoon. He gives you a grim look, and hands you a black envelope, sealed with a wax imprint of Strahd's likeness. It is the same pose you've seen on the coins in this curious realm.
Barnaby tries to keep his excitement and curiosity as he fumbles to open the seal. After a moment's work, he draws out this folded piece of yellow paper.
(Family medical things are taking a lot of my time so if I forget to post please just poke me. This game runs slow but I forsee it being a long duration thing.)

Barnaby: Well, this is quite curious. What would The Baron want with us? This place is so confusing, his brow furrows. While I see no harm in us going...he has proven in the past that he has no trouble finding us wherever we may be...I don't feel right bringing Ireena. On the other hand, she is a woman grown and should make such decisions herself. Regardless, I will certainly advise her against attending this dinner party. As talented as she may be with a crossbow, it is a risk not worth taking.
Meanwhile Chubs is deep in his cups, his usual light bantering nowhere to be found as he contemplates his near death experience earlier in the day.
Assuming that there was opportunity for a short rest, Chubs will use 3 hit dice (and probably the fourth after seeing the result) for 29 healing. If there was not the opportunity, he is still at 4 hp.
Edit: Holy crap that's good. No need to use the fourth.
Second edit: Good thing he doesn't need the fourth, I went to record my used dice and realized I had already used one.
Not if we had the chance for this short rest on the way back.
Not during the walk itself, no. Like I said, you had to hurry back to make it to town by dusk. You made it without incident, but if you want to retcon that choice and take yer chances, I'll let you.
Indeed, I do not feel right with Ireena joining us...there's something going on there and I don't fully trust the Count (at all really) we can check with her and the good father tomorrow, but I wouldn't want her to risk it at all. Ismark felt the same (I think that's her brother's name). I wouldn't want to go myself, but after seeing a few demonstrations of his power I think it best we go and see what he has to say, Hopefully he is good to his word and we can get back here safely. It's a little scary how he knows about the new members of our party
Kif drinks deep and heads up to his room, unless anyone has any objections
You can have a “short rest” while you cool off at the Inn, keep or don’t keep your rolls (this time), and have an early evening activity in town if you want.
I'm not sure how much evening activities I need to engage in, Kif is 'enjoying' whatever meal he can get at the inn and then heading upstairs, planning to check in on the church and Ireena in the morning, unless someone else has a better idea
There's a great, big, beautiful tomorrow Shining at the end of every day There's a great, big, beautiful tomorrow And tomorrow's just a dream away
Barnaby will approach the bartender and order a whiskey, Also...do you, perchance, know how I might be able to gain an audience with Lord von Holt?
Lord Von Holt? Aye. When he's in town, he stays in his manor house. It's on the town square. He gives you directions. I think he's only around sometimes, though.
Just out of curiosity my good man, where does LVH stay when he's not in town?
Barnaby will also look around outside the inn for a guard. Um, excuse me sir, I would like to report a kidnapping. Yes, that's right, a kidnapping. We saved two children from a coven of witches in the old windmill, but when they attacked us in retaliation, some werewolves came along and made off the young ones. We tracked them down to a cave where we attempted our second rescue of the same children in the same day, but we came up short in that endeavor, as one of us was nearly killed, and we were all forced to run off in a panic.
I don't suppose a rescue party could be organized? I'm quite sure that those children will be served up for breakfast if they are not retrieved quite quickly.
The reading was about where things might happen, and where things might be found. It isn't character-specific.

What do you do?

No worries. We're all just here to have some fun.

By my reckoning, he is still quite injured.

Misalyk would rather short rest at the inn than take chances.

So I should reroll hit dice for a short rest at the inn?
Edit: Hint: The correct answer is, "No, you can still use that really good roll that you got earlier."

Misalyk will wave at Barnaby on the way to wonderful sleep. (no evening activities for me unless they are mandatory.)

cool, so let's go by the town square in the morning and see if he's home. Maybe there will be a simple cart selling pastries for breakfast
Yes. I suppose we've had a full day already. We will go in the morning.
