Walking through the door, the party encounters an old mining workroom. It is well-maintained but now reeks of rotting flesh and ozone. Odd metal instruments designed for measuring electricity rest atop tables, along with several loose scraps of parchment with notes that include terms such as “rate of decay” and “accumulation of charge.” None of this was here the last time the party came through.
A thorough search of the room yields a scrap of paper that was once part of a wizard's log. It reads, “Day 1: Halaster has granted me this abandoned copper mine in the Arcane Chambers. Finally, I have access to the components needed for my experiments.” Everything beyond that point is smudged and illegible.
Taking a left at the next intersection, they enter a room (the one directly under the "Mine Storage?" label on the map) where they find twelve sealed wooden barrels covered in dust against the walls. A hammock laden with blankets hangs from anchors in the north wall. Tucked into the folds of the hammock’s moldy blankets is another page from a wizard's log. The only legible text reads as follows: “Day 3. I no longer trust the other apprentices. What they see as mysticism I know to be science! I can’t stand their incantations and their mutterings any longer. If any of them try to intrude on my laboratory again, they’re in for a truly shocking surprise!”
A copper-plated door is set into the southeast corner. The door emits a soft hum when approached.

"So, you bow to my superiority then?"
Shiftgives Kaltenta mocking and haughty look, with a wicked grin, but as he turns his attention to the door, the look is replaced with one of mild concern.
Shiftwalks up to the door, giving it a look over, without touching it, and then turns his head to listen to the door, again, without touching it.
"Doors don't normally hum do they? I've not really thought to listen to them before, but this one is obvious about it."
Shiftspends a little more time, studying the door to find any traps or other oddities.
Perception check to find anything visually obvious about the door and/or any traps: 20
Investigation check to workout anything extra about the door, but no touching just yet: 3
Shiftgets a wicked smile on his face, but thinks a little more, before letting out a resigned sigh.
"I cant find anything on the door, and it appears to be unlocked, but...I suspect it may still be trapped, maybe from the other side, I'm not sure."
"The hum has me worried and those notes we found makes me suspect the door might be the, truly shocking surprise, they talk about."
"I would try and get one of you to open the door, but, well I don't actually want any of you to die, and this is the dungeon of the Mad mage, so it may be more then just a surprise..."
Shiftlooks back at the door.
"We may want to stand to the side of the door and maybe use some leather, or the like, to turn the door knob?"
Kaltent shakes his head at Shift's suggestion. "Ive got a safer idea."
He turns to an empty spot in the room and casts a spell with a flourish, then glances back at the others with a satisfied grin on his face, even though nothing appears to actually happen as a result of the spell. Then he gives a mental command and a piece of wood from the smashed barrel floats into the air and taps Bronx on the shoulder.
"Everyone step back from the door, just in case," he says as he gives another command and the piece of wood drops back to the floor. Once everyone is clear, he commands his invisible servant to open the door.
Bronx, Kaltent and Krennic are up first The Ghouls all go Statue, Zinn, and Atuan are last.
It is close quarters combat, so we'll use no map here. Just choose your ghoul by number (1 through 6). Colors are broken right now so I will just bold names.
Bronx, with a shout that can only be described as gleeful, raises his hammer and shield. Red light flashes out from the scrawled eye motifs on his arms as he channels divinity to turn undead! (DC14 wis save on all undead within 30ft)
Kaltent stabs the nearest ghoul with his Rapier, booming energy wreathing the blade.
Attack: 8 Damage: 7 + 2 thunder damage (booming blade) + 6 sneak attack (assuming one of my allies is within 5 feet of it) + 14 more thunder damage if it willingly moves on it's turn.
If he's able to do the attack without getting within 5 feet of the other ghoul, he'll back away again after stabbing to open up the distance (fancy footwork prevents AoO from the one I attacked if it survives)
(Oof. Apparently kaltent's gonna be the character with all the crit fails)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Fumble roll for Kaltent: 71
Melee: Roll a DC 10 Dexterity Check, on failure you throw your weapon into your enemy's space. DM determines where the item is thrown on large sized or greater creatures.
DEX(10) check: 17
The blade vibrates as Kaltent swings the weapon and it almost falls out of his hand. He juggles the hilt for a moment but maintains a grasp on the weapon.
Kaltent follows, also keeping an eye out for traps.

Zinn follows towards the back of the group, making small notes of any changes in the tunnels from what’s on the map.
Vercinius Thrax: Lizardfolk Cleric - Hoard of the Dragon Queen
L’Ouverture Zinn: Kobold Sorcerer - Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage
Titus Vorenus: Dragonborn Paladin - Waterdeep: Dragon Heist
Nemean Goldenmane: Tabaxi Fighter - Lost Mine of Phandelver (Retired)
Bronx, having gotten it in his head that Zinn might spontaneously combust with a dazzling lightning show, follows Zinn at the back.

Shift:
Interestingly, the door appears to have no trap mechanism attached to it though the door is clearly emitting the hum. The door is not locked.
Shift gets a wicked smile on his face, but thinks a little more, before letting out a resigned sigh.

As Shift finishes saying the word "knob," Bronx smashes in the top of one of the nearest barrels to see what lies inside.

(Unseen Servant spell)
Shift jumps just a little, at the sound of Bronx smashing the barrel, hoping the others were distracted and didn't notice.
At Kaltent's display, Shift grins and steps away and to the side of the door, interested to see what happens.
"I love to watch you work your magic Kaltent. You always have such fun tricks."
Shifts grin is now a full smile, as he waits to see the outcome.
