“The letter doesn’t seem to specify from where these samples need to be taken, so I guess right here is as good a location as any. We can get top soil anywhere, and the graves we initially dug should give us access to 3-foot-deep soil as well. With Priton’s help here, I’m sure we can get to 15-foot-deep soil in no time.”
Tyr just looks to Priton "I can just stay in the wagon during travel." As Ragnir read what they needed to collect he just made a strange face "Well that doesn't sound exciting at all, but whatever if it pays not up to me to complain. As for additional instructions, nope." Tyr began to make his way to the back of the wagon with the haversack. "So what kind of missions do you all usually do for the guild?"
While finally setting the bodies ablaze after a lot of work putting the pyre together, Hermenor says: "Aye, first mission for the guild as well. We barely started and we already need our names cleared with some powerful company or somesuch. Don't worry though, the lass that left about an hour ago has some clout with the nobles. She'll sort us out."
He then tries to move the group along: "Well, bodies are respectfully aflame. All that is left is deciding whether we want to take soil samples from this place right here or some place else. I don't understand what is going on here but there is definitely something amiss. We might as well take a water sample from the river, if it is at least 10 feet deep, that is"
Hermenor walks over and tries to ascertain how deep the river is (survival: 14; if perception is more appropriate, the modifier would be a +6 instead, for a total of 16... perhaps his background as a sailor might help?)
Hermenor- you are able to tell the the water should be about 10-12 feet deep at the deepest. You also note the water is going much too quickly for someone to be able to jump in and dive down. The current would push them way downstream initially.
Hermenor concludes: "Well, perhaps this is not a safe place to gather water, but we should still be able to collect all three soil samples. Why don't you do the honors, Priton, since you are already digging?"
"Yep, lemme see the vials." Priton says as he gets a little sample in one of the vials "Best to get some samples of stuff on the way and at the village if he wants samples." He says as he carefully puts away the vials so that they wont break

Digging further passed the mud the ground turns to rocky hard terrain. It remains that way for the entire rest of the dig. It surprisingly Priton powers through it with the help of the others clearing out this tunnel. You get about what you think is 14-15 deep and take a sample.
It took about two hours and despite the manual labor, Priton rolled high enough not to have to roll a constitution check against exhaustion.
Everything is packed up, the bodies are burning, you have all 3 soil samples, you help Priton out if the hole. It’s about 3-4 in the afternoon. Talking with Brian before he left, it’s about one more day travel. You have roughly 3 - 4 hours of light left of the day.
Tyr just looks at his new companions and watches them curiously, they sure were eager to get the jobs done. Wasn't surprising when he heard they were on their first mission though, at least they were eager to work and make a good name for themselves.
"I agree - maybe we can find a tavern or inn on the way to rest in. Share some ale and stories, you know bonding things." his smile just curled into a wide and charming grin.
You make your way for a couple of hours before it gets dark. Setting up camp nestled up against a gathering of trees. It’s a quiet night and nothing catches your eye as dangerous.
waking the next day you see a plume of smoke far off in the distance. Light black smoke, it must have started over night. As you continue your journey to the camp. The looming black cloud fades over the day, still present but no longer an active blaze. As you come closer to what must be the area you’re looking for. It’s obvious the fire and the trade camp are one and the same.

Suddenly a barrage of arrows slice through the air, landing in a row like a fence in front of the wagon. Halting the horses and donkeys. A voice comes from the trees. “What is your business on this path?”
"We wish to pass through good sir. Were on our way to the trade village or what seems to be the remnants of it." Priton says as he hops off his horse with his hands up

Hermenor stands atop the wagon, from the driver's seat where he was leading the animals (he has grown fond of them and was sad to see one of the donkeys leave with Briar). He then tries to locate the archers' location without looking threatening himself, and perhaps estimate how many they might be.
Tyr huddles down in the back of the wagon - his hands drifting to the hilts of his shortswords. For now he would wait to see if words would resolve this conflict.
You hear some rustling to your left as a woman makes her way onto the path. She appears to be young, very peculiar though. She is tall and slender with broad shoulders, light olive skin with dark green hair. Two pointed ear point out just as sharp as two teeth protrude from her bottom lip. But she has a face with youthfulness you only see on elves. “Come with us” she motions her hand in the air. Shortly after 8 other members come out from the trees with bows and short swords in hand. Not aimed or ready for attack, but holding onto them. They begin to walk while keeping a guard that circles around the wagon. One of them is a firbolg that is carrying two deer carcasses over his shoulders, while a wooden club attached to his side. The woman states “if you’ve come for your supplies, you’ve wasted a trip.” As she continues to walk, keeping her eyes on the path.

Ragnir will read what is written on the scroll out loud so the party can hear what we need to do/collect.

"Oi didn't the dirt look weird around here? " Priton says as he digs a couple feet down and away from the bodies and checks out the dirt
