When Anafrey finds the book, Erric thinks back to any stories at all he's heard about Aatush the Cruel, or any plays he's seen or songs he's heard, and leafs through the book for any other clues. (History? 1 Performance? 14)

Maldorn dutifully follows Anafrey recommendation and stays put by the doorway while his three companions investigate the room. Maldorn turns his back to them, so he can instead keep an eye out: sh us "I'll make sure to spot any other cockatrice that might ambush us from behind" He says, a bit paranoid.
At Eric's excited mention of 'Aatush the Cruel,' Maldorn too tries to remember if he knew any famous hunter or noble that went by that name (history: 8).
Maldorn then crushes the very end bit of his finished cigarette on the ground. Not failing to recognize the irony in doing so inside a burnt out place, he smirks to himself.
Anafrey is grateful when Erric takes the book from her hands, not wanting to bother reading through it herself. She at the fallen rafter, then wordlessly scoots Maldorn out of her way to open the last door of this floor to have a look at what is in there prior to proceeding to the next floor.
Erric also goes to the last room, very curious if anything heard his illusory sound before, and waits for Anafrey to open the door. He readies vicious mockery as they open the door, mentally listing out insults involving hide and seek, scavenger hunts, peculiar pet enthusiasts, fire safety, and creepy old houses.
None of the curious have heard of Aatush the Cruel prior to reading the book's title, but leafing through, they can piece together that the book is a collection of stories — whether historical or fictional, they know not — about a Rakshasa pirate of the same name. Curiously, there is no author's name printed anywhere.
Opening the last closed door, Anafrey peers into a room almost identical in size to the last room. A gaping hole in the ceiling leaves no doubt as to where the debris in this room came from. As for the room's purpose, that is less clear.

Is this last room the only room we've seen with a gaping hole like that?
What time of day is it? Hard to tell because this has taken weeks IRL but prob only 15 mins in-game.
Erric goes back to the study with the beam and looks for another sturdier potential hold on the second floor for him to throw a loop of rope onto. He'd like to pull out a length of rope and attempt to tie a loop at the end and lasso it to a rafter if that is possible - if straight dex check here you go: 21

Seeing Erric try to loop a rope onto the second floor, Maldorn says: "Perhaps I can just hold the beam and secure it while you climb up, Master Geric?"
If Eric's rope fails to find purchase, Maldorn will move to do as he just suggested.
If Eric is not willing to go up the beam:
Maldorn will try going up the beam himself: "Can you hold the beam for me then, Master Geric?" (OOC:help action.)
"Holding the beam would be great, Maldorn, but what happens if whoever's climbing it falls? I was hoping the rope tied to something else would make it easier to climb the beam and let the climber hold onto something steady and not fall, whether the beam itself was steady or not."
(Was hoping the rope would drop the DC of the climb.)
OOC: As far as you know, you have seen the entire first floor. It is still right around mid day. And let's make this a little simpler:
While speaking with Erric, Maldorn reaches down and tests the beam. He is surprised to find that the heavy support does not budge at his touch. He pushes harder. The beam continues to hold fast. He looks at how it is wedged against the wall and how it rests on the wall above. It looks like it's secure enough. One after the other, Erric and Maldorn successful climb to the top.
The two find themselves standing in what appears to be the only upstairs room remaining, and it seems to be on the verge of collapse. Debris litters the floor, which strains under your every slightest movement, yet in the far corner rests a small casket atop an elaborately carved wooden shrine. Both are remarkable, not only as embodiments of fine craftsmanship, but more pertinently, they stand upright and intact.
If either or both of you wish to approach the casket and shrine, you're clearly going to need to watch your step (need DEX checks).
Erric describes what he sees to Anafrey and Jambiya, and doesn't move from the secure beam. "Maldorn, do you see any reason why we'd need to go mess with a casket? I can make a pretty good guess about what's in there, and I've heard and told enough horror stories about what happens to people who touch magical creepy things to know it's usually not a great idea. I defer to your eminent sagacity here. If we think it's worth a look, I'm lighter and can probably make it across that shifty floor a bit more easily, though I'll hold onto this rope."
OOC: How small does that casket seem? Child-sized? We don't know anything about Clarice, do we? She could be a gnome for all we know. Is there any writing over there, or other journal pages?
Anafrey calls up from the first floor, "Why would a casket ever be on the second floor of a building? My experience, crypts are usually below ground level, and with good reason." She idly swishes the very last of her liquor in her flask.
Maldorn responds: “A good hunter always examines the tracks left by its prey, Master Geric. I say you use your light weight, as you put it, to approach. I’ll make sure to be ready to shoot an arrow at any menace.”
OOC: The text says "casket," but I'll clarify (since you're LOOKING at it and not READING about it) that this definition is more suited: a small ornamental box or chest for holding jewels, letters, or other valuable objects. So, the guys are looking at a (human) waist-height kind of pedestal with various inscriptions and images carved into it, and on top is a kind of box.
Erric gets a better look at the pedestal and box and says to Maldorn with a grimace, "what's in the box?"
He secures the rope to the rafter, holding the line in one hand, and draws the burnt silver rapier this time in the other hand. He looks down once at Jambiya, takes a deep breath, and begins to make his way across the creaky floor. He knows he's going to regret this, but again, the story would be unsatisfying if they left this alone. He's a little hungry and kind of has to pee, and he has yet to think about why he's doing this or what he hopes to accomplish.
Acrobatics check to not fall to the first story: 10

As he gets closer he tries to glean/read/notice anything he can about the box and pedestal, and also looks around the room every few seconds, trying to notice sneaky cockatrices or worse. When/if he gets close to the box, he'll cast minor illusion of a lifelike dummy with its hand outstretched, standing right before the box, and, unless he notices something peculiar, try to open the box with the rapier, standing to the side and down from the dummy. If something jumps out or g-g-g-g-ghosts manifest, he'll hightail it back along the path he took from the rafter.
Hmm not sure what happened with that dice roll? Test: 8
(When I first posted the above post, it said in place of the numbers, "Dice rolls not yet available for this section." Let me know what you want me to do, DDP!)
Erric dances across the floor, cringing at every creak, but not feel much in the way of dangerous footing. Once he gets to within five feet of the shrine, the floor stops creaking and seems perfectly safe ... strangely enough. Looking at the floor, he lets Maldorn know there's room for him but probably not anybody else where the floor seems secure.
OOC: Erric, make a religion check, please. Maldorn, you should as well if you're joining the bard.
Erric attempts to put the point of his rapier into what he suspects is the seam between the box and its lid, but the rapier slides to the side without getting any purchase. There is a lock.
He looks around the entire room again, at all the debris, in corners, behind the pedestal, for anything of note. Especially any mirror-shaped or mirror-sized things.
Also does he remember seeing any possible entrance on the first floor to the basement? Could a staircase down have been what fell on the room below him, next to the study?
"Well everyone, this chest is locked, and I'm not sure it's something we want opened? I'm thinking we might not want to disturb the entity that kept this so safe. Clarice, Alistair, are you here? We're friends and we want to help if we can." He describes all the markings he sees, and studies it enough that he'd be able to recreate it as an illusion to a satisfactory level of detail.
Erric takes a good look at the pedestal. The shrine is dedicated to Sune, as is the casket. In one of this travels, he became pretty familiar with the imagery of the goddess. The casket is made of finely carved mahogany, inlaid with the symbol of Sune, fashioned in gold.
He does not see any mirrors and does not remember seeing any possible entrance on the first floor to the basement.
When he calls out to Clarice and Alistair, he receives no response.
