George shrugs off his Ghillie cloak and steps out into the middle of the road ready to hail the approaching riders. 

'Oy there.  We're peaceable travelers looking to cross the river.  We mean no harm and want no trouble friends.'

As he says this he spreads his hands wide to show he's unarmed - but leaves his bowstrung and ready at hand if the riders make a hostile move.

 “No trouble is good. Welcome to the free city of Yuma. You where seen approaching and then you stopped. Any problems we should know about? No offence but we don’t like people loitering outside of town with night approaching.”

Trusting in his magic and his abilities to hide, Thomas starts to summon cloud cover for an escape. When The riders prove non-hostile, he lets the shreds of mist dissipate into the twilight. 

With a British upper crust accent Aleister says, "C is the name mam, Aleister C," and makes a surprisingly elagant leg.  "We're just travelers trying to find out what has happened to the world and are cautious as a result of what has 'found' us, as I am sure you can understand."  He waves his hand at the towers.  "We would greatly appreciate a chance to exchange information and I, personally, would offer my medical skills to any whom might be helped by them."

 “Doctors are always welcome.” He is happy to talk, anything in particular? The cartels are moving north. Yuma fought a major war to turn them back here. Further west (edit: east not west) there are stories about a chupacabra driving out the entire population of Truth or Consequence. “I know the entire world has gone insane but that one seems unlikely.”

"Wait a moment, please.  You said that the population of Truth or Consequence was driven out.  Do you know where they went?  I have family there and am trying to reach them," Sarah speaks up, concerned.

Sarah also looks over the group trying to get a feel for them, their honesty and their general appearance, particularly their arms and armor.

 These troops are in good order and are maintaining discipline while their noncom talks to you. What he is telling you is the truth as far as he knows it. "That's a fair way away so we really have no details about what happened."

"Thank you for telling us what you do know.  We'll have to head that way to check things out.  Can you tell us anything about the road ahead?  You mentioned the cartels?" Sarah prompts, mindful of the need to gain information.

'We've got some light trade goods we can swap for a night's rest if you're willing.  We also have news from the West Coast as far north as Portland, a Medico and a couple other skilled folks here who'd be happy to trade their services.'

George makes a show of unstringing his bow and settling it in the loops along his quiver, slow practiced motions designed to advertise his peaceable intentions.

Grinning at the mention of 'skilled folks' Thomas pulls back the hood of the suit and armor, and is looking forward to showing off and maybe teaching magic to new people. 

#Gamliel, did you see any sign of magic in use, inside, or are we going to be the sideshow freaks looking for friends?#

*Nothing immediately apparent, but they could be there. We'll make a good show of it, and hopefully find something new to add to our repertoire.*

To George he adds "Maybe we should dress up like bards of olden days, travelling around and sharing the news with communities, and being held sacred by our usefulness."

 "The road swings south after Phoenix and we've heard that the cartels are very active near the Coronado State Forest. You could go North out of Phoenix but that way takes you into Apache territory. They have spent the last decade scalping tourists in their casinos while the cartels have been actually scalping people."

Gamliel "She's the one I saw talking to the guard captain' The woman looks at the owl "Familiar?" When you talk she tells you that she was a carnival ***** fortune teller but after the Change she suddenly found that all that fake stuff she had been doing for decades was suddenly real. She can go into a trance and send her point of view out about a mile. She's the 'lookout' for the west road.

In return he asks for what magic she can teach him, and he speculates on connecting a network of magic users somehow and spreading knowledge and news far quicker than horseback. "Some kind of telepathy, talking to anyone you've met before and sending information across the ether as needed. If we start doing that, then we can actually form a real society again, rather than a bunch of isolated, besieged communities. "

"I've heard of some Magics that could be useful but they require great skill in the craft. (Translation - you need to be high level) Telepathy Scrying Sending 

There is also Crystal Ball of Telepathy "(DM Note: I know I've said 'no magic items' but this seems to be something that fits with the theme of the campaign. It's also legendary so they're not lying around for everyone to pick up)

Sarah listens in to the news her new companions bring.  She'd been traveling for a while now, mostly keeping out of sight and hadn't had much opportunity for news.  It sickened her how quickly some people lost what qualified them as people and not rabid abominations that needed to be put down.  Listening to her companions also made her feel a bit more confident at her decision to join them.

OOC- I was looking at Sending as the method to communicate. Thomas will make himself familiar enough to every caster he meets, that he could be the 'switchboard' for magic messages, as they encounter civilized groups. 

Aleister asks Madame Lavinia, "Have you worked with Tarot cards?  I left mine at home but I remember them in detail, since I painted them, and would be willing to share their possibilities.  As far as communications, another way is using birds, I have a couple of ravens who help me out.  They are intelligent creatures who can deliver messages long distance, as long as they are familiar with the place they are sent to.  Once they have been somewhere they can usually find their way back.  Much better than pigeon, they can serve as spies as well.

 “I’ve always thought of Tarot as the perfect example of overactive pattern matching.” They are grateful for your help in their clinic. The guard like the idea of training ravens but it will be months of work until that bears fruit.
