Tarin stands up for a moment and his head whips around to watch two arrows sink into his companions with dismay. "Wretched goblins! You'll pay for this!" Another fiery jet lances out from his outstretched finger, arcing with a practiced precision towards the harried goblin. A trail of flame streaks through the air as the bolt sails into the underbrush, leaving wisps of smoke in its wake. It catches the unlucky goblin square in the torso, engulfing it in flame and dropping it to the forest floor. The smell of cooked meat and burned hair wafts back on the breeze. (3rd goblin down!)
Penumbra drops her bow in the road and charges after the remaining goblins, drawing her two daggers. Following the wizard’s agitated owl, she arrives a split second after one of the goblins is enveloped in magical fire and stabs the last living ambusher with one of her daggers, grievously wounding it.
Rand’s sense of accomplishment at taking out one of the goblins is short lived as he sees his companions go down. "Save the cleric, save us all,"his dad used to say. So, he rushes over to Bankur and lays his hands on him, offering a prayer of healing power. As Bankur returns to the living, Rand says, "Welcome back, sleepy head. Salty Joe needs your help. I want to get me another goblin."
Salty Joe ???
Bankur, feeling slightly better after Rand's healing, sits up and follows Rand's advice to locate Salty Joe. Stumbling over to him Bankur puts both hands on his chest and utters a prayer "Ilmater, grant your healing boon to this suffering soul". A wave of white light flows through Bankur and into Salty Joe, totally enveloping him, then dissipating and leaving a slight halo behind. After healing Salty Joe, Bankur drops down on the deck of the cart, making himself as small a target as possible.
Raldeanready his crossbow to fire as soon as one of the goblins pokes his head out of the brush. He whispers to himself "Show me you ugly little face, you barnacle encrusted shipwreck!"
The last goblinDisengages Penumbra and Dashes off into the woods at a breakneck pace, trying to escape the ambush gone wrong!
(Combat over unless Raldean wants to shoot the last one at disadvantage (the goblin is 90 feet away in the woods); Tarin might get another firebolt off, also at disadvantage; or Penumbra can throw one of the daggers at it at disadvantage but won't catch it on foot or by flying.)
Cahoots swoops down from the trees again, angrily hooting as he gets in the goblin's face, flapping and buffetting him with his wings; then he wheels around and begins flying back to the wagon. (OOC: Cahoots takes the Help action, granting advantage to Tarin's attack that cancels out the disadvantage from attacking through the trees. His fly speed is 60 feet so I'm assuming he can keep pace even with a dashing goblin.)
As Cahoots rustles the fleeing goblin, the momentary distraction gives Tarin a chance to pinpoint him. He stands up and tries to aim true.
The familiar crackle of flame darts out from his fingertip, hurtling towards the goblin in a tight spiral. (OOC: Tarin casts Fire Bolt: ranged spell attack: 13, damage: 4 🔥.)
He then takes stock of his companions and their relative condition. "Everyone alright?" A look of concern crosses his face as he looks about.
The trees and the distance help the lone goblin escape, and silence again falls down on the trail. Taking stock, one of the oxen is hurt pretty badly by a couple of black-feathered arrows, and Bankur definitely looks the worst of the group, his normally green-tinted skin tone looking pale and with more beads of water than usual. The dead horses are still about 40 feet in front of you on the trail towards Phandelver, and the town is probably about half a day away. There are three dead goblins in the tree line.
(OOC: Everyone gets 35 XP. Tarin, Bankur, and Raldean gain an Inspiration point for the best posts during the combat sequence!)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Penumbra gathers her dagger and bow then returns to the wagon. "Curse those little slime molds! Is everyone O.... Oh, Bankur, you don't look so good. Perhaps we should hurry along to our destination. Or maybe find a safe place to camp while we lick our wounds? I wonder if one of our attackers was carrying any healing potions or something like that."
Penumbra will search the goblins and examine the horses hoping to find any kind of healing item, or loot she is a rouge after all.
Bankur picks himself up slowly off the floor of the cart, arrow still lodged in his chest, and nods to Penumbra "I don't feel very good friend Penumbra, but I will be fine. I just need to rest for a bit to regain my strength, and Ilmater's favor. He will ease my suffering as he does for all eventually. Though I would prefer to stay here to rest I don't think it is safe. I think I can stabilize myself enough to travel but someone else will need to drive the cart."
At the mention of work Salty Joe makes himself scarce and checks out the pile of stuff Penumbra took from the Goblins. He is trying to take a Bow and a couple of quivers of arrows.
You recognize the horses - they belonged to Gundren Rockseeker and Sildar Hallwinter. They have been dead about a day, and the saddlebags have been looted. Nearby lies an empty leather map case.
The goblins carry no coins or valuables, and their weapons are poorly made. Penumbra does find something unusual on one of them, though - a pair of knucklebone dice, each with a skull symbol on the side that would normally show six pips. An inspection of the area reveals that the creatures have been using this place to stage ambushes for some time, and you discover a trail hidden behind thickets on the north side of the road that leads northwest.
DC10 Survival:(OOC: If you succeed on a the check, you may read the spoiler...)
You recognize that about a dozen goblins have come and gone along the trail, as well as finding signs of two human-sized bodies being hauled away from the ambush site.
Returning to the group Penumbra shows the others the map case. "Bad news. I think those horses are the ones belonging to our employer and his human friend. Looks like these goblins have been setup here for awhile and I think I may have found their trail back to wherever they are camped out at, it looks like they may have dragged someone away from here recently. I can drive the cart if we are going to continue, but that ox may have trouble hauling this load in its current state. It might be best if you all take the oxen and cart back down the road aways and take a rest before we do anything. I could hideout in the treetops here with the owl and we could keep a look out incase that goblin decides to return with friends. Then if you are all feeling up to a bit more action we should probably go save the guy who is supposed to be paying us."
"Aye, the flappy girl be havin the right o'things. Pressing on with their trail at out backs means we be watchin our stern for a day or two. An I ain't pissin about watchin all fronts. This ain't my favourite place but I be used to tracking the little bastards. Tarin send yer bird with me, I'm going to go hunt that runaway! Stay here and rest up, I'll be back in an hour or so."
With that, not wanting to give the goblin too much head start, Raldaen will set off down the trail to track the goblin.
((OoC - Raldaen will try to catch up to the fleeing goblin to capture him (Survival: 25). He will travel no more than 40 mins down the trail, as best as he could judge it, before heading back to the party.))
Tarin nods at Bankur. "You're in no condition to drive, my friend. My farmhand days are long behind me, but I'll never forget how to lead a pair of oxen. I'll take those reins if need be until you're in good shape again."
As Penumbra heads over, Tarin inspects the remains with her. "Goblins!" he spits. "Nasty creatures with nastier arrows." He rubs the spot on his chest where Bankur's healing magic had only moments ago patched him back up. While Penumbra sifts through their belongings, Tarin lifts a hand up over one eye and chants a slow, sonorous ritual. His eyes glimmer for a moment as he scans their belongings. (OOC: Tarin casts Detect Magic as a ritual, which takes 10 minutes and 1 action.)
Tarin considers what he knows about goblins and whether this is the sort of thing they would have independently planned, and to what degree this ambush is a conventional one versus something more nefarious. "Is this really the work of four independently-minded goblins?"(OOC: Tarin thinks on the history of goblinkind. {History: 12, Investigation: 8.})

With that, not wanting to give the goblin too much head start, Raldaen will set off down the trail to track the goblin.
"Entrust my closest companion, not to mention my foremost research assistant, to someone on a suicide mission? Certainly not." Tarin huffs, obvious annoyance plain on his face.
"How do we know they haven't set up another ambush five minutes down the trail? It's madness for you to go alone, my friend." He places three fingers into his mouth and whistles sharply (OOC: {Performance: 13}), and Cahoots swoops down to land on his shoulder.
He grins. "That's why I'm coming with you! But let's keep our eyes peeled and weapons out, yes?"
(OOC: Tarin and Cahoots follow Raldaen down the trail, keeping their respective eyes peeled for any other goblin ambush sites or similar shenanigans.)
"Flappy Girl?" Penumbra mumbles wrinkling her nose as though the name smelled bad. Then she shrugs and says "Well I guess it's better than Hell Spawn." Turning back to the remaining group she says "Five silver pieces says they come back empty handed, that goblin was really moving. Any takers?"
((OoC - xrfm, Raldaen wouldn't be waiting 10 minutes for your ritual to take off after the goblin... Maybe enough time for Penumbra to scan the bodies, but he spotted the trail himself, so I'm working on worst case 2 minutes after the fight before Raldaen is running after the gobbo.))
Raldean and Tarin take off after the goblin while the rest of the party waits with the wagon next to the road.
Raldean & Tarin:
The ranger and wizard go off on their own to try and catch the lone goblin, although at the gnome's pace due to his short legs and small stature. After about 10 minutes, Raldean, who is in front looking for goblin tracks, misses the snare trap set up on the path until after he feels the tell-tale pull of the rope. (Make a DC10 DEX save - if you fail you are snatched up by the snare, suspended 10 feet above the ground, and restrained. If you make it, you are able to quickly pull your foot out before the loop closes!)
Tarin, you know that goblins are individually weak, but can be fearsome in groups. They are black-hearted, selfish, and often ruled over by strongest or smartest among them. Where there are four, there are usually more...

Raldaen whisks his foot away from the crude trap as it triggers, watching the snare fly upwards with his feet firmly placed on the ground. Looking behind him to see Tarin following along, he shouts back "'Ware yer feet gnome, it was unlikely that was laid in haste by our slippery green piece of seaweed with legs."
Raldaen looks for signs of the Goblin's passage this way (Survival: 19).
"Might be fer best if'n yer research assistant flaps itself ahead aways. Don't want t' be caught off-guard by more o' those booby traps!"

Tarin yelps as the snare whips back into the branches overhead.
He exchanges a glance with Cahoots, communicating for a moment. "He'll watch. But let's not forgo our own eyes, either. These may see what an owl's cannot, and vice versa."
(OOC: Cahoots scouts ahead, looking for traps. His fly speed is 60 feet, so he will use his action each round to spot anything that might be out of the ordinary and his full movement thereafter. {Perception check, Keen Senses: 20.} Tarin keeps a wary eye on the trail himself. {Perception check: 10.})
