The half-elf bard covers the wagon with an illusion (15 ft cube), allowing the passengers to use their stealth abilities, and speaks an encouraging word which inspires her to take a steady aim. Bankur and Raldean both fire quick shots into the woods, sending an arrow and a bolt sailing deep into the trees but completely missing the goblins, who yip and laugh.
Goblin INT check: 14 Goblin Perc: 1
The creatures return fire, four black-feathered arrows shooting towards the wagon. They are much more accurate than your initial shots, though...2 impact one of the oxen dealing 11 damage! Another arrow somehow hits Tarin, causing 5 points of damage. The final arrow flies past Bankur and sticks into the front of the cart.
One of the goblins shouts out in broken common, "Leave stuff! Run way! Or we kills and eats you. Hahahaha!!" They all move around in the trees and attempt to find new hiding spots! (OOC: When you make a ranged attack for this encounter, you may to choose to roll a perception check or rely on your passive perception score to find the goblins. Also, please specify Left or Right side gobos for targets.)
(OOC: Also, I did modify the dice rolls to account for the oxen being potential targets for the goblins...So the big bad Red Banner is for a reason! I also had to move the Spoiler box to the top of the post - otherwise if I change something in the text before it it rerolls everything! So this is my fourth attempt to get this right...)
(OOC: Everyone is up...2 goblins to the left and 2 to the right, probably within 30 feet.)

"Those pint-sized pig stickers are pepperin our pack beast! If they kill it, we best keep one o them walkin' pieces of snot alive to truss up in it's place, cos I ain't pulling this thing to Phandelver!" Raldaen curses at the ambushers, but appreciates that he has seen more than one main mast toppled to cripple a vessel and force the crew into a fight.
Seeing the goblins move about and try to hide after their shots, Raldaen runs toward the treeline, a little wide of where he last saw the goblins, hoping not to run into one immediately. He looks for them as best he is able whilst on the run and then attempts to hide himself amongst the brush until the goblins reveal themselves again.

((OOC - I'm thinking we are 40ft away from the horses, but less than 30ft from the treeeline, based on DM's comments for gobbo's. If I can't make the treeline in a single move, I'll dash instead of hide and try to get deeper into the brush and behind the goblins))

A goblin-arrow sails through the air, slamming into Tarin's torso. He screams in agony as it carves out a deep gouge and keels over backwards.
Hearing the shouts, Cahoots wheels around and scans the left side of the trees for goblins. (OOC: {Perception check: 19.}) If he finds any, he buffets them with his feathers for a momentary distraction, flapping and hooting murderously. (OOC: Cahoots takes the Help action on the nearest goblin he spots, granting advantage to the next attack that Tarin makes on it.) He then uses the remainder of his movement to fly into the eaves, well out of reach of the goblins.
The gnome crawls into the roiling purple smoke of Salty Joe's illusion and lies prone. (OOC: Ranged attacks against Tarin have disadvantage.)
Raldean runs to the right side of the road and slips into the treeline, searching the area from where he had last seen the goblins. Finding the pair in their new hiding spot, he has to decide whether to complete his movement and attack them in melee, take a shot at them from where he is, or hide behind the large maple tree he is currently next to. (OOC: They were within 30' so letting you decide how to complete your turn. Your perception beat this group's stealth check =)
Cahoots feels the pain of its master and loses track of the pair of goblins on the left side of the road. It continues to fly silently through the tree branches, keeping an eye out for the creatures.
One of the goblins shouts out in broken common, "Leave stuff! Run way! Or we kills and eats you. Hahahaha!!" They all move around in the trees and attempt to find new hiding spots!
"Miserable wretches! We'll have your hides for this!" Tarin yells, wrenching the arrow from his chest with a grunt. He looks around to see if there are any small creatures hiding in fear — birds, squirrels, and so on — and calls out into the eaves, conversing in their shared tongue. "We will rid this place of these hateful intruders, but we need your eyes. Can you show us where they are hiding?"
(OOC: Tarin uses his Speak with Small Beasts feature: "You can communicate simple ideas with Small or smaller beasts.")
Remembering his days growing up in the forest, Tarin considers what kinds of animals might be scariest to goblins, and decides on a fearsome grizzly bear. He shapes his hands into a spell, momentarily pantomiming what looks like a claw as part of the gestures.
A second later, the unmistakable sound of a grizzly bear's distant roar booms through the trees. It grows louder and louder over the course of the next minute, as does the sound of underbrush and foliage crushing beneath the incredible weight of its (apparent) frame.
(OOC: Tarin casts Minor Illusion to mimic an approaching grizzly bear. If a goblin spends their action to examine it, Intelligence DC 13 to deduce if it's real.)
With a growl, Bankur fires another shot from his crossbow at one of the goblins to the left.
Attack: 13 Damage: Unable to parse dice roll.
After loosing the bolt Bankur then turns to Tarin "Friend Tarin, you are hurt!".Bankur raises his hand in Tarin's direction and utters a command word under his breath. A white glow briefly surrounds Tarin and his wound seems to heal immediately.
OOC: I'm using my bonus action to cast Healing Word on Tarin. 4
After loosing the bolt Bankur then turns to Tarin "Friend Tarin, you are hurt!".Bankur raises his hand in Tarin's direction and utters a command word under his breath. A white glow briefly surrounds Tarin and his wound seems to heal immediately.
Tarin gasps in shock as the gouge across his chest repairs itself, the flesh knitting over the wound. "My thanks and gratitude!" he says, rubbing a hand over the spot where the wound used to be incredulously. "Why, I feel as good as new!"
Spotting the Goblins, Raldaen hunkers down beside the tree trunk out of view, hoping that they were too busy hiding themselves to have spotted his dash towards them.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Penumbra will rely on passive perception (15) to scan the right side of the road. If she spots a goblin she will loose her arrow at it.
(rolling with advantage since Penumbra is hidden.) Attack: 22 Damage: 7
(additional damage from sneak attack) 4
For her movement Penumbra will leap from the wagon, spread her wings and fly to close the distance between her and the goblins on the left. As she does this she will scream and do her best to be intimidating. She is hoping to get them to flee or at least flush them out of their hiding place.
Rand knows that the ambush is set, and with the goblins under cover, his ranged attack will be pointless. Knowing that the goblins are moving under cover and reloading, he drops his bow, and moves to the right side of the road. He draws his great sword from his back and attacks the first goblin he can reach.
(Do I need a perception check if I use my movement to close on them for melee? If so, here it is: 13 Attack: 19 Damage: 10 )
Tarin drops prone on the cart, still inside the illusion of purple smog, and calls out to the small woodland creatures to ask for their help. Just as a pair of squirrels start to reply in their chittering voices, the sound of a large bear echoes through the woods the animals go still and quiet. When a bear's around, everything hides. That's just how it goes...
Penumbra fires an arrow at one of the goblins on the right, and it travels as sure as any magic missile! The goblin literally never saw it coming - it was just looking around the tree it had tried to hide behind and was dead before it hit the ground. The tiefling then took to the air like a bat out of the nine hells, intimidating the other goblin to the right side of the road. While the creature stares in abject terror at the flying Penumbra, Rand moves in and nearly cleaves it in half with his greatsword! The right side of the road is now clear of goblins.
Salty Joe is unable to see anything on the left side of the road, so he prepares a spell to hurl at the next creature that he can see.
Bankur fires his crossbow but only hits branches and air. But seeing Tarin's poor condition after taking a hit from the goblin arrow, he casts healing word on the gnome, completely restoring the wizard to health!
Raldean witnesses the awe-inspiring flying tiefling and fearsome paladin rush to the left side of the road, so he decides to go hunt down the other two on the left side. He enters the tree-line quickly, finding a good hiding spot of his own...
The two goblins on the left manage to see through Tarin's illusion and demonstrate their martial prowess by firing exceptionally well-placed arrows, dropping Salty Joe and Bankur where they sit! (OOC: 9 damage each - they both rolled crits! Gobo WIS save vs Joe's spell: 11)
(Salty Joes presence is obscured so their advantage should be cancelled out. Either way it hits but that damage is enough to KO me unless its not a crit.)
(Reading through my illusion should take an action and an investigation check. The illusion tricks the mind not the eyes.)
Cahoots wheels around again, his keen eyes spotting the goblins lurking along the left side of the trail. With a terrific screech, the barn owl glides down from the tree and harries the closest one, using their telepathic bond to reveal its location to Tarin. He retreats back into the eaves again. (OOC: Passive Perception: 18 (13 + 5) vs. 16. Cahoots takes the Help action.)
The gnome stands up for a moment and his head whips around to watch two arrows sink into his companions with dismay. "Wretched goblins! You'll pay for this!" Another fiery jet lances out from his outstretched finger, arcing with a practiced precision towards the harried goblin. A trail of flame streaks through the air as the bolt sails into the underbrush, leaving wisps of smoke in its wake. (OOC: Tarin casts Fire Bolt: ranged spell attack: 24, damage: 10 🔥.) He drops prone again, flattening himself against the wagon, panting hard from the exertion.
Tarin stays inside the smoke but spends his remaining movement to crawl next to Salty Joe, gripping his shoulders. "Hang in there, my friend. We're going to get through this."
Rand's sense of accomplishment at taking out one of the goblins is short lived as he sees his companions go down. "Save the cleric, save us all," his dad used to say.So, he rushes over to Bankur and lays his hands on him, offering a prayer of healing power. (Lay on hands on Bankur, for 1 point.)
As Bankur returns to the living, Rand says, "Welcome back sleepy head. Salty Joe needs your help. I want to get me another goblin."
((OoC, I am pretty sure that hide takes an action too, so the gobbos are doing a helluva lot in their turns.))
Raldaen ready his crossbow to fire as soon as one of the goblins pokes his head out of the brush. He whispers to himself "Show me you ugly little face, you barnacle encrusted shipwreck!"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Turning back towards the goblins after healing Tarin, Bankur doesn't even see the arrow coming. Flying straight and true from the goblin's bow, it sinks deeply into Bankur's chest. Looking down at the arrow with total disbelief, Bankur grunts and collapses to the deck of the wagon.
Feeling slightly better after Rand's healing, Bankur sits up and follows Rand's advice to locate Salty Joe. Stumbling over to him Bankur puts both hands on his chest and utters a prayer "Ilmater, grant your healing boon to this suffering soul". A wave of white light flows through Bankur and into Salty Joe, totally enveloping him, then dissipating and leaving a slight halo behind.
