"It also means painting a possible target on whoever bears it."Nirzeg says morosely, speaking up for the first time since the group left the Inn. Whatever enthusiasm he had about pet projects had been diminished as well. Even Wickerman looked depressed as he lay atop the Gith's head, blowing the occasional orange bubble. Of Zeek the Cat, he is nowhere in sight. But may presumably be back in town keeping an eye on their cart for now.
"Probably for the best. Just need to be more wary of ambushes, I suppose. I will still need samples, but I doubt we will be hurting for volunteers this time around." The githyanki shoulders his greatsword for a change, and as a precaution still pulled down a strange set of goggles reminiscent of wickerman's eyes over his own.

Derrikoth stores his lance before reaching into Josephus's saddle bags and pulling out a torch which he promptly lights. "This is enough for me and Josephus. Besides, the flames might scare off any trolls we come across and they'll run straight back home. Whether or not I want to find wherever they're making their home is another story, it will be undoubtedly filthy and if there's anything controlling the trolls, it will be there."
With the trail still relatively easy to follow, you plunge ahead into the wilds of the Evermoors under a cloud-covered night sky. The footing is treacherous for those without the ability to see in the dark.
// The lighting conditions are dark, which means that characters without darkvision automatically fail checks that rely on sight, while characters with darkvision make such checks with disadvantage. Certain spells and equipment can be used to offset these penalties. //
Tracking the trolls (Group Check): You will need at least three successful Wisdom (Survival) checks here, as you continue to follow a trail made a few days ago. If you have an idea for a different skill or some other proficiency or spell, feel free to get creative.
Please also roll CON saves to forego a long rest (DC 10, or gain one level of exhaustion).

Astra was willing to go without sleep for the night, since most of the party seemed to believe that they should track the trolls rather than stop and rest. The aasimar didn't take the lack of rest as well as she thought she would, as she was generally sluggish and seemed to have some difficulty focusing on anything. Still, she turned back to her Warforged friend, who had been rather quiet on the trek. "Hey Gen *yawn* you doing okay there, buddy?"

Off in the distance, a noise like thunder is heard, but no storm threatens the skies.
You search further and further to the north, and after several hours it becomes clear that you have all been following each other for some time. The large-footed tracks have long since disappeared, and it’s now getting close to sunrise.
A rocky outcropping in a stony rise provides a cozy but serviceable shelter, if you wish to rest. Or you can continue with your current levels of exhaustion.
"Guys, I think that we should take a rest. We lost the trail hours ago and we're not going to find it any time soon. If we stop now, we can get back to finding the trail by noon or so."

“I will take the first watch then.” Genevieve volunteers. “You all require more sleep than I. I do not mind watching your unconscious bodies for a few hours... I do need a torch or some sort of light though.”

The sun dawns as Genny keeps watch, painting the Evermoors in pink shadows, with small rays of light occasionally piercing the mists.
The rocky place you’ve found for a rest offers small patches of tufts grass and moss, and has a 20-foot rise that hangs over the small sheltered area. The base of the rise is surrounded by the mists.
Genny can either keep watch from mist-laden shelter, which affords more safety, or from the rise, which offers a much greater view.
For safety’s sake, Genevieve stays in the mist-laden shelter and keeps her eyes peeled for any dangers around.

Throughout the morning there are occasional noises that punctuate the gloomy silence of the Evermoors—that same thunderous roaring that you had heard before sundown. Still, no storm clouds can be seen anywhere. You haven't seen any signs of life save for plentiful insects and small ground animals.
At around highsun, you all feel relatively rested and able to continue. (You can all hit the long rest button)
