After the elfs voice enters her mind. "Ahh that is quite useful. I had been planning on using Rusty here" The red panda suddenly appears on Kal's shoulder. "To watch over those who left the party. I can see through his eyes if he is not to far away. But before I was asking more about how your magic works. Witt and 9 get theirs from their faith. Nemeia makes her magic with her contraptions." Pulling a spell book from my pack. "I get mine through study."
Lynn-Marie nods, a nervous tingle building in her stomach at the prospect, but also seeing the opportunities that it would present. "I would be happy to have a Kal'dorath bodyguard. I'm certain the nobles and royals would recognize your origins, which would do wonders for my presentation. Actually, there might be more of you at the gala, now that I think about it."
"I come from a family of successful traders, which is how I have learned a little of dealing with nobles and royals. I have learned my history, and have some knowledge of arcane matters as well. My father deals in wines and trinkets that the rich enjoy, while my husband has specialized in spirits, so I am familiar with these subjects. Ah, and I am a bit of an alchemist." A keen eye might see she looks away at the last revelation about herself, showing there is more to that than she lets on.
"I might not have the silver tongue of my father, but I am smart and I can recognize a good deal from a bad deal. And Father did make sure we all are familiar with basic weaponry. Despite everything it's a good skill to have, he said."
"I just hit things. Like, A LOT."Sora joked. She waited to make sure everyone had time to enjoy her joke before admitting to more. "Well, ok, I've picked up quite a few tricks over the years, mostly as part of taking in criminal bounties. You can ask Moira about some of my fancier tricks. That said, I'm actually really good when it comes to hitting things."
I really think it's a good idea if you stay somewhere central, Kal,Witt adds. That way I can stay near to you, and when I get into trouble, you can rescue me. He's trying not to sweat too hard at the thought of being surrounded by rich, fashionable city folk. I've never been to a gala before. I think they might throw me out just for not being rich and good at talking. Although I don't really mind being thrown out, so if anyone really does need a big stupid distraction, I'm happy to oblige.
He thinks a little more. I think it will be nice to plan who will stay at the gala and who will sneak off to explore, but I have a feeling we might not have much control over things. I don't think this kind of adventure goes to plan very much. Not in books, anyway. So if no-one notices me or cares about me, I will try to get away, but if everyone stands around and laughs at me, I will suck it up and keep them busy. How does that sound?
Kal seems a little nervous at Moria's question, "My magics are from my equipment... 'contraptions'."
He looks to Lynn-Marie a little less uneasy, "Kal'dorath are often singular entities but we are of one people. Those that would have Kal'dorathi bodyguards could consider themselves as familay as well. We would not fight each other should a fight break out. We would gather our charges and protect them together as a unified front. This could be advantageous in a social situation for you."
”Oh! So like what Nemeia does. I think she called it artificer. She made Cali, that mechanical cat. Isn’t that amazing. Ooo do you have any thing you’ve made i’d love to take a look at it. I don’t really understand how the mechanics of it are able to draw on the arcane. It’s so different from what I do with my books and using the words and wand and everything to force the magic to do what you want.”
"No, I cannot show you as I did not craft them. Many of my magics are practical effects."Kal pulls a small glass canister from his belt. A thick brown liquid sloshes inside. "My sword produces fire when it strikes. I will toss a canister and strike it at the same time to cause a burst of flame in a small area. Things of this nature." He eyes Moira and the others for a moment.
"The Kal'dorath abstain from practices of magic. Some even refuse to use enchanted items. If we see others of my people, it would be best not to ask them about magics."
Kal holds his hands up, "No, no you've not offended. I'm just... More accepting of those practicing magic than my kin. My understanding might seem out of line to some. So I say this to clarify some of the lesser known beliefs of my culture."
He rubs the back of his head anxiously, "My apologies for again causing an awkward moment."
The party continued on with their shopping trip, soon visiting the local arcane shop, which was attended to by a happy portly human man. Their stock was quite varied but much of it proved too expensive at the moment. Next they found the bookstore, not far from the arcane shop in fact, which sold small but eclectic mix of book. The wizened old halfling woman behind the wooden counter was happy to simply point them where the books of interest were within the shop's walls. Fortunately the prices here were far more tolerable by comparison.
From there, the group had a wide range of options for lunch, from expensive gourmet bistros, to commoner comfort foods. The options were not as varied as some of the larger cities in Tyrandel, but still there was plenty to choose from in the merchant district alone.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Witt is delighted as he enters the bookshop, and takes a moment just to breathe and soak in the possibilities. He goes over and greets the shopkeeper. Excuse me, ma'am. I'm a traveller, newly arrived in the city with my friends, and looking to learn more about it. Where might I find some books on this city and its history. I'm especially interested in the royal family and events of the last few years, but older history is interesting too.
He goes to the place where the shopkeeper points and looks around for something interesting: Investigation17. If anyone from the party came with them, he will happily discuss titles and purchasing options with them in a respectful whisper.
After perusing the magic shop and asking to have a spell scroll set aside I follow Witt to the book store and chat with him about what he is finding. Afterwards I suggest to the group "Perhaps we should find everyone else and have lunch together. We could discuss plans for tonight. Can your method of talking in our heads reach everyone?"
As you peruse through the available books in the section the shopkeeper pointed you to, you soon find a fascinating looking volume which you pull out and start reading through.
And quickly discover it's a copy of the exact same book you borrowed from Gus the night before. In fact you wonder if he just had someone come to this store to pick up that book for you. You set it down and grab the next tomb which contains a history of Royal family succession. This is an incredibly boring book, reads very dry and seems to be little more then a glorified list of names who took the crown over the years.
Asking the store owner about prices you find that it will depend greatly on how rare and/or collectible the book is. But for most of the books they have available, they're generally around 1g each.
"The range is fairly limited as it is a minor magic. Though I can try to reach out further." Kal pulls the cowl up and attempts to reach some of the other companions. "They are too far. We will have to find them the old fashion way, but I believe they are in an artificers shop?"
Witt sighs at his disappointing find, but shrugs and mutters to himself: Names and families of powerful people. Rich folks always care about that kind of thing. I guess it might be useful at some point. He pays for the dull book of names, and then searches for something more interesting, with knights and dragons in it.
Lynn-Marie follows the group as they go from shop to shop, chatting about mostly nonsense with the girls and being a bit more reserved with the men, although not to the point where one would consider her shy. Just that, reserved. There is not much she needs from shops at this point, and while she could have spent another day doing research on the local spirits, getting out with strangers was a welcome reprieve from the loneliness she had already began to experience out away from home. Further more, it felt good to get a bit more aware of each individual personality before they would enter the gala tonight. The beginnings of a social bond that might be necessary if information proved difficult to come by.
Interestingly, you find a book with knights and dragons, but it's a black knight going off on an adventure to rescue a dragon. The basic premise is one of not judging a person's character by their appearance, but it is still a pretty odd book.
Witt smiles happily, grabs the book and buys it. He stows his purchases in his backpack for the moment, and then dashes off into the streets to try to find the others.
