"I'll admit, it is not a great plan...I am truly more used to planning lectures and book outlines," admits the Professor, revealing a rare moment of vulnerability, "but it's all I can think of right now--do you have any suggestions to improve the plan, Maxine?"

"I wish I had... We can wait until the moon is full and destroy the circle the very last minute from a safe distance, like when you were saving that panther back there. But it's too risky and hag will be after us any way. We need to buy you some time too, to run from those creatures. Would it be possible to make an illusion - not the magical, but like a coat that your servant will carry - and keep it at one spot, while you will be destroying the circle from another? And Shae and me will try to reach the skull from yet another point. The more fake targets the safer, like Mirror images."
After thinking a moment, Shae would clear her throat before speaking out loud, "The hag thinks I'm defenseless and 'marked' me. I could be bait or be a distraction to buy everyone time?"
It's not reckless if I mention it to the group first right?
"Sounds good, Maxine. Scratch the Detect Magic, then I do the ritual for Unseen Servant instead. I can have him approach the circle first, from a different angle, to disturb the sigils. If he were to carry a coat, the wisps could easily destroy him, but he is naturally invisible, so he may be able to approach closely enough to interact with the runes. Berrus can keep the wisps off me with fire like before, and I can use Gust to push them away as we approach. Then when I get close enough, I can use Mold Earth from my direction," says the Professor. "Now if I only knew that Magic Missile spell, I could really give the wisps a fright...Oh well," he sighs, "let's get to work with what we have."

The Professor:
"Berrus and I are just the distraction, Shae. We need you and Maxine to quickly find the summoning sacrifice and get out of there. Your chances are better together," says the Professor, adding with a smile, "...though your bravery is inspiring."

I’m counting this as a short rest, for purposes of abilities and so on. You’re about halfway between where you encountered the mephits and the hag’s lair, for rough guidance on the distances.

At time-20 minutes of the short rest, the Professor will start his Unseen Servant ritual, then move on to his Comprehend Languages ritual. When the others are ready (and have spent HD, etc. for the short rest), he will light Berrus' branch again with his firestarter and use Control Flames ability to get it really going. To Shae and Maxine, he will say, "I'll count to, say, 100 to give you a head start on the flanking maneuver, then Berrus, the Unseen Servant, and I will head to the circle. Sound good?"

"Let's start counting together to keep the same pace," with that Maxine repeated after Professor a few counts and continued, while she and Shae tried to go around the skull, as inconspicuously as possible.
"98...99...100. Okay Berrus, let's go. You lead the way and I'll keep the air gusts going," says the Professor, then he gives detailed instructions to the Unseen Servant, takes a deep breath, and heads towards the circle.

It takes a few moments, but with only the steam providing any real cover, both Shae and Maxine soon draw four of the shining orbs. Not intent to hover, they engage directly, with two focusing on Shae and two concentrating on Maxine.

As soon as the wisps come into view and within 30 feet, the Professor will use his Gust spell to target one and blow it away from them DC 13 Strength save). Since there are two, unless Berrus can do something at range, at least one of them will likely get an attack. If the attack rolled is high enough to hit (after any possible disadvantage added to it), the Professor will use his reaction to cast Shield and hope that is enough to deflect the attack. Having no interest in fighting these creatures, he will “press on” towards the circle, using Gust as necessary to keep them at bay as he passes.
With the Professor creating a protective bubble of forceful air currents around them, and Berrus keeping a careful eye out, you press on towards the skull, with the wisps letting off and rushing ahead of you, either to warn the hag or to await you at the summoning circle after a short while.
With the ladies having taken a more circuitous route through the nearby swamp to approach the skull from as far from the lake as possible, you have no visual contact between you and them, and are unaware that they are similarly facing wisps.
