On the ship: Reng, the Captain gives you a smile at that question: "Depends- if you're as good at unloading a ship than you are stowing the gear, then we might not need any at all. This here" she raps her knuckles on the waist-high balustrade around the main deck, "she's magical. An' in a very special way too. Given the right command, this boat folds up nice and neat and an be carried by any one of us. Alternatively, we could also shrink it down to the size of a rowboat. So, to answer your question- really depends on what size of hole you want to make in that dam."
Thessalandra quickly drops her smile as three of the Kenku warriors wade towards the boat and quickly come aboard the ship. Reng, you notice that the plants surrounding the dam seem to recoil slightly, as the Kenku enter the water. Both of them preen some of their feathers, before standing up straight and almost in a choir, say: "I am Shae. Look closely."
On land: After a fifteen minute hike through the jungle, you arrive on what seems like a clearing, before your eyes adjust to the darkness and you notice the dozens or so huts and other structures woven into the treetops and looking to be an interesting combination of artificial and organic structure. You take it that these are the dwellings of these Kenku. Sure enough, a short call from the Elder calls off two guards who were hiding in the treetops, bows at the ready. Before long, you're joined by most of the adult kenku population of this settlement and they seem both curious but also slightly uneasy at your presence. Once they have assembled, the Elder speaks up: "Hope's Crew is different. He has sworn his life to protect mine", pointing at all the Kenku surrounding them. Looking to Shae, they add: "Is that a natural occurrence? Hope's crew is very defensive of me. If I may" The utterances are largely in Shae's voice, but the last part sounds a lot like the Professor.

Mulligan, weapons stowed and hands empty, slowly approaches the visitors to the ship. He waits until he is sure that they have seen him before he approaches too closely, even then stopping a good ten to twelve feet away.
"Greetings and salutations! I am Mulligan," he says pressing his open palm to his chest and given the visitors a slight bow. He pauses a moment so that they can introduce themselves, of that is their custom and they have names... But if they do not chirp up he will continue on. "We're just trying to travel through these lands. We mean you and yours no harm and apologize for any inconvenience. I'll happily show you around the boat and introduce you to those aboard if you wish."
While talking, Mulligan closely looks over these three feathered guests. He's looking for weapons or even belongings and such, anything that can give him a clue about them, their lifestyles and all such... (( Insight: 5 ))
After Mulligan's little introduction, one of the Kenku, wearing a belt made of woven birch bark that holds up a small obsidian-bladed ace and a horn-tipped recurve bow slung over their shoulder hesitantly bows and repeats: "Greetings and salutations! I'll happily show you around the boat?"
Mulligan, you can tell that these creatures have adapted well to life here in the jungle. They are similar in a lot of ways to Fang, when you first met him. There's a clear intelligence to them, but also something feral, wild, and perhaps even dangerous. Your mind conjures up the image of the impaled goblins, as a fierce reminder that these kenku are likely experienced warriors in their own right, and likely far more comfortable fighting in this environment than you are.

(Assuming the negotiations are happening out of sight of the boat, Fang would have sent Mushu to accompany Shae and report to him should things turn sour.)
On board the boat Fang remains tense. Despite, or maybe because of, his familiarity with jungle waters he doesn’t like be idle on the water for long. And they’ve been still for quite a long time. He begins to wonder why the group could make the magical boat back into a briefcase. After all, it was thanks to him that they were able to fix it after Faekin(sp?) tried to run off with out. Fang shudders remembering the sharks, hopefully there aren’t any of those this far inland.
Mulligan first leads the visitors towards the captain. Always best a captain knows who is aboard he ship and that you get proper permission before poking around. Mulligan would of course introduce anyone the past first, be it Fang or Reng or random sailor. The point is to go slow, make a show of being perfectly open and allowing their colorful friends to get comfortable with them.
With his performance and persuasion skills, Mulligan does his utmost to convey that they meant to just pass along the river and had no interest in the denizens here. “We’re happy to find you though,” Mulligan assured them. “We thought these lands all vicious goblins on one side and undead on the other and just wanted through as fast as possible. We didn’t expect, but are happy to find, friends. At least I hope we can be friends…” Mulligan gives them his most charming smile…
And after the meet and greet with the captain, and confirming they could see all parts of the ship, Mulligan would play tour guide to the best of his ability. He would explain as much as he could but grab others and ask them if there were questions concerning parts of the ship, how things worked or the Ins and outs of sailing. All the time allowing the Kenny to set the pace and even decide the path, if they do chose.
Fang keeps within earshot and visual range of the touring group. Just to ensure the guests behave themselves. Which thus far they have proven to do. But caution was always best when dealing with strangers. It’s still a wonder to Fang that glasses managed to speak so convincingly with his village elder.
Professor, the elder looks at you, tilts their head sideways and responds, in your own voice: "I don't understand." "I got an offer like you've never seen before"" Hope's crew is very defensive of me?"

Back on the ship, the kenku are curiously taking everything in, clearly attracted by the shiny metal cartography tools and the spyglass. They are very hesitant when seeing Fang, but upon realising that he's standing on deck, they seem to relax a bit more around him. "We're happy to find you though" one of them parrots back, with the other saying: "At least I hope we can be friends."

They might think of your landing party as hostages, but as far as you can tell, they voluntarily agreed to leave you with some as well. Might be that they think the three of them can handle themselves well enough, or it might be a show of trust and a diplomatic endeavour to get your two peoples closer together. Reng watches Mulligan play host, considering for a while how useful such a skill can be. She falls in with the captain, offering implicit support that she has friends ready to defend the ship.
But if she has an opportunity, she will start to make conversation with whichever kenku seems most friendly. She talks about her time in the jungle, describing the different threats (flora and fauna and undead) she witnessed, anything else notable. She asks if they have seen anything similar in this area, hoping she gave enough phrases to them to repeat back. She’s trying to get a sense of the jungle in this area.
Observing the interaction thoughtfully, Shae begins to believe she may have a different interpretation of the communication. She'd open her mouth to add something when the Professor would pipe up suddenly with some enthusiasm. Smiling politely, she'd move to hold her hands in front of her to give the Professor and the Elder an opportunity to finish their conversation.
Should the discussion continue in a similar circle as it had been, Shae would finally let go of her lip she'd been chewing on. "If I may, Professor." She'd nod to him in thanks for his engagement thus far hoping she could add from her perspective. "Elder," She'd look to address the elder kenku respectively hoping she may refer to him as that, or he may be able to correct her. It had already been made very clear by the Professor and others that the groups focus is to get by the dam, but Shae couldn't help but feel like they were missing a very important component to the conversation. "I believe you are asking for our assistance." She'd pause. "Are you asking for Hope and crew to help with something?" After another moment, she'd take a page from the Professor's book. Watching him earlier, and now, it reminded her of how he was able to successfully build a communication link with the Grung, and he was doing the same here with vocabulary.
Taking a deep breath, Shae would make a sincere effort to begin listing some words and thoughts with pauses, accompanying them with gestures as an added form of sign language so that the Elder may be able to pick up and piece together in better detail, his ask. "I, we, want, to work together, to protect, to defend, to save, my, our, crew, home, against a threat, enemy, beast..." As she was naming things and gesturing, she'd feel herself reach for her healers kit. "Sickness?" It may not be it, but Shae would present her personalized kit anyways. Whether he knew it or not, she adopted a pouch and mix of the containers made by Fang when he was on one of his crafting sprees during their first trek through the jungle. He and Mushu wasted nothing they harvested. The healing supplies within the kit were a mix of home made self-developed, grung learned, and modern medicines and accessories.
Reng, as you talk to them, you get them repeating after you: "Enemies.", followed by the hissing sound. The plants and so on that you mentioned don't seem to have the same effect. The sound reminds you of rattlesnakes.

They then say, piecing together your words: "I" pointing at you as they say this, "want", "to defend", "my", "crew", "my", "home", "against a threat", "enemy". They punctuate the ending of the sentence with the hissing and rattling sound.
