Engelian Adventures

This episode has reminded Guilliame of his training with this ritual under the tutelage of Master Narim. The Alarm spell can be somewhat exacting in its setting up, and care needs to be taken when deciding what to class as an intrusion, especially when using it outside (i.e., cats, rats and small dogs are classed as Tiny Beasts).

Oakie dokie. Next time exclude tiny beasts. But leave current set up till it runs out. Go back to bed.

Fortunately, the cats have learned their lesson for the night and the rest of Guilliame's sleep is undisturbed.

"What was that loud bang last night?" asks Granny Naomi when Guilliame enters the kitchen in the morning. "It wasn't those kids again, was it?"

"That was me scaring off some cats. Is it OK if I go to school this morning. I hope to be able to finish learning the spell, and I want to work out what to specialize in. I'll do some more research on that."

"Cats!" she says as she places a bowl of porridge on the table for Guilliame. "Yes, there's a lot in this area. Sometimes they keep me awake with their fights."

When Guilliame asks Naomi is she minds him going to the School, she replies, "Sure, that's fine. The more you learn the better. However, don't forget we need to get some more jartinal weed, and if you get the chance, you could look into getting that plaque for the front door made up."

"Do you want to harvest the weed or should we buy it from the market?"

"Harvesting weed!" exclaimed Granny Naomi a smile coming to her face. "I haven't been out of the city for so long... It would be nice to get out into the countryside, but we would be away for a couple of days with no guarantee of success. Who would look after the store?"

Then she calms down and says, "No, it would be better to get it from a trusted seller in the market."

"What about I come back after lunch and Sam can look after the shop."

"It doesn't have to be today. Just soon," Granny Naomi replies while filling her own bowl. "If you see Sam at the School when you're there, you could ask him if he's available."

The two then sit down and chat about things in general while they eat their breakfasts.

[OOC: For the record, it is Moonday the 21st of Khorhalas. Unless you want him to do something other than go to the library and study, I am happy to push Guilliame through until midday. If you are, then make an Arcana check for trying to learn Expeditious Retreat against the current DC of 15. Otherwise, let me know what you want to do instead.

Also, Phil has created an online tool that can be used to create quick mud maps of locations to help visualise things. It can also be used to help plan out buildings. Please look at the image below of my initial idea of how the ground floor of Guilliame's shop/home looks like. Any suggestions as to what else it should include are very welcome and after we have established the basic layout, I can create a better map that we can use permanently. On the walls, grey lines are door and blue lines are windows with shutters.

[LOL: No top floor, but it has been previously mentioned that the roof has a flat area that can be used for drying things when the weather is fine. Anything that you can think to add?]

Guilliame heads off to the School and spends the morning in the library where, with Velma's aid, he finally believes he has mastered the Expeditious Retreat spell he has been working on.

[OOC: This spell is not a ritual and Guilliame now has four 'preparable' spells but can only Prepare three spells (i.e., this is the Vancian magic aspect of the system). When he next has a long rest, you will need to decide which three of the following four spells he will Prepare for the day—Welcome to one of the trials and tribulations of being a D&D wizard.

His four preparable spells that aren't rituals are:

• Burning Hands
• Charm Person
• Expeditious Retreat
• Protection from Evil and Good

Notes FYI:

1. Each time he gains a level as a Wizard, Guilliame's number of Prepared spells will increase, as will the number of times he can cast them (i.e., his number of Spell slots).
2. Spells with the ritual tag can always be cast as long as the caster has the required spell components and the ten minutes plus normal casting time for a spell.
3. Ritual spells can be Prepared spells, but most Wizards don't prepare them that because it prevents them from Preparing their non-ritual spells, which can't be cast otherwise.
4. At the moment, Expeditious Retreat is not one of Guilliame's Prepared spells. That will have to wait until after his next long rest, at which point he can choose it as one of his Prepared spells.

Does Guilliame know the best master to talk to about specialising in enchantment spells? Ask Velma if she knows.

[OOC: I suspect so, the shop is part of a row of buildings, shops and residences, that are built so that they have shared side walls. If it is not clear the blue openings at the top and bottom of the map are windows with shutters.

The master for people wanting to specialise in enchantments is the archmagus himself: Cyrus Black. Guilliame would know that such postgraduate students are often very much left to their own studies because of the archmagus's busy schedule.]

Invite Velma for a celebratory drink if she is free. If she isn't free now ask for a raincheck (or Engelian equivallent(meterology spell?)).

Velma can't leave the School at the moment because she is working, but if you want to come back at the end of the day she would love to have a celebratory drink.

Tell Velma I will come back and arrange a time. Head home and see if Naomi wants to go to buy the jartinal weed while Guilliame minds the shop.

As Guilliame is heading toward the gate on his way home, he meets up with Master Minton heading away from the gatehouse towards the riverbank with Bruxa the dog straining on a lead.

"Hello, Master de Marchant," says Minton with a smile. "Lovely day isn't it?"

"It certainly is, Master Minton. How was your time away?"

"What do you mean?" asks Minton, straining to keep Bruxa under control. "I haven't been away... Though I have been thinking about it."

"I meant away from your usual post. Where were you thinking of going?"
