"Look, all we know is that the town was being attacked by undead, and we were contracted to deal with the source of the issue. So this is all your own doing. If you're so innocent, you could've kept your necromancy under control and we wouldn't need to be here. But I'll engage with what you have to say. Why don't you enlighten us? What is the Blood of Vol?"
The Blood of Vol is mostly known through the Emerald Claw, a terrorist organization that attacks at random with undead. There actions are not actually approved by the Blood, which is mostly worshipped in Karrnath, and have been outed as religious fanatics by the country. Their worship involves blood and knowledge and no deity. For they believe divinity is in the blood and only needs to be unlocked.
"And as I said before, we only had three servants, which you destroyed all three of them. Why would we bother raising such time worn bodies when we were only here for a ritual! And why in the world would you finally stop to ask questions now? Are you all finally realizing that you've murdered innocent men?"
"Once again, you unleashed the undead on the local town. By no means do I consider you innocent. But you insist that you are, so I was giving you a chance to explain yourself. Which you haven't done. So you'll have to try better with the authorities as you face justice."
With that, Kastor at least is finished talking to him, and prepares to return to town to claim their reward.
(If you all want, the town will do a trial to decide the mage's fate, you all can see it and possibly put yourselves forward as witnesses.)
"We weren't trying to unlock anything, nor were we seeking knowledge! As I said, my master was to give his life to guide others on our path to divinity but you all interrupted the ritual." Brozz pushes the man forward and out of the cave. He remained silent as he begrudgingly followed.
As the party exits the cave, they notice the trees have lost their color. Their leaves have fallen and the trees themselves seem to start wilting. The group moves for the village, where they first see Hans and a few militia meet them first in the forest. Hans gives a sigh of relief as he motions to the others.
"Thank the Flame that you all are alright. Who's that with you?" Hans ask as he glances over the mage, who gives a groan as Hans mentions Flame.
As they leave seeing the life drained from the surrounding trees, before they meet Hans, Kastor remembers the magical conduit he saw earlier. He casts Detect Magic and goes back down, following the trail of the magic from where he first saw it above the door, to wherever it leads down below, then retraces the magic all the way back up (hoping to locate the source and end point of that magic)
The magic seems to be fading as Kastor followed the previous circuit. It travels all the way to the final room where they fought the priest. But it disperses near the entrance, fraying out and sending itself else where. And it is hard to pinpoint the exact source of the magic but it seems to be coming from the trees themselves, though they no longer channel any magic downward.
"Again, my master was going to give his life to guide others. This was the purpose of our pilgrimage." The mage says as Hans looked confused.
"Was...he someone you found in the crypt?" He asks.
“Ya he keeps spouting about how they were innocent, and his master was going to sacrifice himself to lead them to something and unlocking knowledge. He mentioned the Blood of Vol not sure if that means anything. He keeps insisting that we killed innocent men. Didn’t look innocent to me and there where some crazy undead down there. He also said they only had the few to carry their stuff.”
"That does sound suspicious...We can have the village judge them. While I know the Blood of Vol doesn't forbid necromancy, most I know of them is the acts of the Emerald Claw...And the attack that happened didn't seem planned at all. I can take care of it from here, if you want. I'll send word to the father that you all saved the village. Thank you all."
Hans puts a hand forward to take the bonds from Brozz.
(If you want it summarized quickly. The town lets him go. While his people did open the way, they did not expect the zombies to roam outward as there was lack of purpose for them to do so. So most of the zombies should roam about the grove unless something lured them out. That being Hans the cause. What he had hoped to stave off the dead, only caused more of them to come out with his fresh kills. It was only a matter of time until the zombies caught the smell of the villagers. So the fault lies in both parties, due to negligence and ignorance.
While Hans does feel ultimately guilty, the mage wants none of it. He simply desired to go back to the grove and collect his comrades' bodies and head back home. The villagers do not blame him for not knowing but Hans still wanted to compensate the mage. So he offered to guard him on his journey, to which the mage agreed so under the condition of not arguing of their faith's dogma.
And when you all return to the Sharn, to tell the father of the news. He is not sad at the death of the priest and his acolytes, instead he rewards you with more gold. He insists upon it as you all purged the zealots of Blood.)
Awarded with 600 gp (to both Kastor and Sylvester to split between.)

“Was he just leading you in a worship style or are you trying to actually become the divine through these rituals?”

"I'm happy to have completed the task and return for the reward, to be honest. I trust Hans to ensure justice is carried out."
(OOC: Happy to have completed the one-shot and return to town to move towards a longer-term campaign, sorry.)
