Baeshra and Nyx quietly approach the castle, with the help of Baeshra's spell. As you sneak close enough to get a good look, you can see that the castle consists of seven crumbling towers of different sizes and heights, but the upper stories are all in varying states of collapse.
The centuries have not been kind to Cragmaw Castle. Baeshra, you can spot some areas where the goblins have shored up the weakest areas beneath the falling towers with crude timbers.
On your stealthy trip around the castle you find several things to note:
- A short flight of steps leads up to a terrace in front of the main entryway. Baeshra, past the wreckage of a pair of sundered doors you can make out a shadowed hall. Round towers loom over the entranceway, with dark arrow slits looking down on the terrace. - On the south side of the old castle, an overgrown path leads to a passage that climbs up into the wall. A large iron door stands here, sheltered from direct outside attack. Arrow slits ten feet above the ground overlook the path. - On the north side, you spot a footpath leading up to the castle wall and an almost completely collapsed tower.
On noticing the northern footpath and the crumbled tower, Nyx taps Baeshra on the shoulder.
"I would say that entry is the least guarded, I would think the front has guards and the side door could be locked. Not that that is a problem. If we head towards to crumbled tower we may be able to get a closer look inside? Just need to be careful not to slip."
Baeshra nods, and starts back towards the others to let them know what they’ve found, “Probably best to get inside as quietly as possible and hopefully locate the prisoners before starting the fighting.”
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Nyx winks at Baeshra as he motions to go.
"I will wait for you here friend. Best keep on eye on them. Do hurry back with the cavalry."
The satyr find an obscured spot that allows her to stay hidden while keeping an eye on the castle. She keep to eyes peeled, looking for any signs of movement.
Nyx settles herself in amongst the overgrowth about 50 feet away from the castle, pretty confident that she is well hidden. Unfortunately, the gentle breeze keeps blowing her hair across her eyes. She isn't able to keep a good look around the place while she waits.
Baeshra makes it back to the others and describes the situation.
"Hmm, from what you're saying, it does sound like the main entrance is the obvious way in... so it's probably trapped. As long as we are looking for traps and ambushes, we may find that the least problematic way into the keep."
Umbriel considers the terrain. "I think Pale and the cart will be fine out here - Castles, even ones as dilapidated as Cragmaw, were built to repel invaders, so it may do to have everyone with us. However, I'm not going to speak for him. Droop, what would you like to do - stay here and guard the horse and cart, or come with us and save some people from evil goblins?"
OK, the horse, mule and cart are tied to a tree, presumably safe and secure. The party, including Droop, heads for the castle. Main entrance? South entrance to a possibly locked door? North pathway to a debris and rubble strewn wall?
You guys manage to sneak up on Nyx, who is batting the hair out of her eyes.
Now that you are closer, those proficient in history, Lyngheid with advantage due to the stonework, can make a History check.
10 or higher:
You realize this is not a goblin construction, and Cragmaw Castle is probably not the original name. This castle is several centuries old. Maybe more.
15 or higher:
You recognize the architecture, and realize this castle is of old Phalorm, an ancient realm that once controlled much of the North.
Now where? If you follow the pathway to the broken down wall of the castle, you all manage to find a dusty tarp that is covering a broken through entrance to the castle. If you want to do it stealthily, make some new stealth checks!
If you want to try a different entrance instead, go ahead.
"This castle is an unusual fort for goblins. While in Waterdeep i read about the old Phalorm kingdom which was an ancient realm that once controlled much of the North. The architecture of these ruins looks very much like it is of Phalorm origin, which would make the castle very old. Centuries old."

Nyx readies herself by stowing her possession so nothing will move, checks her hand crossbow and ties back her hair.
"The light of day is burning Baeshra my new friend. Let us scout out this vile lair of goblinoid evil - ohh sorry Droop!"

OK. It sounds like the discussion is which entrance to use? Also, will Droop be going in, or staying with Pale and the Mule?

Ireniana nods. "Yes, save people from the evil goblins. We'll need to be at full strength for this one."

Baeshra would lead them to our new friend by the north entrance.
