Tibor replies to Lothlién and Xarroth's questions "I don't think the dragon's shadow would have such a great effect over something that lives underground. But I'm no expert in these matters. Logging and negotiating prices are what I do. There were nine woodcutters and three carpenters working here under my supervision."
"Well the only things to search around here is this building, that chimney standing near that other cabin's foundation, and the ruined tents." Lia speaks up. She glances to the cabin. "I assume, as this building is intact, there is nothing here... Should we check that foundation with the chimney then?"
"I can assure you that no one else is here with me" Tibor adds "but I do have some parchments to put away before we move. I could do that while you look around for survivors."
OOC: if you want to convince Tibor to go with you around the camp, roll for persuation or intimidation. Otherwise he will wait inside until it's time to go to Phandalin.
The lone chimney over the remains of a cabin is the closest thing to look at. You start looking there, finding no people. But buried in ashes inside the chimney you find a totem: thirteen tiny stick figures dripped in pig's blood, inscribed with tiny lightning bolt symbols and tied together with hair. The earth under your feet seems solid and you don't feel any vibrations underneath. Only a few birds chirp nearby.
OOC: roll for Intelligence (Religion) if you think you can get something else out of the totem.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
OOC: rolling religion for Xarroth: 18
The figures are all similar, the only difference between them is due to the twigs being naturally twisted in different shapes.
Xarroth identifies them as an evil totem. Its purpose would be to bring ill fortune to anyone near it, but to make it appear that the bad luck is due to natural circumstances.
After repeating his disovery to the others, Xarroth agrees with the others, "I can burn them with a spell while in prayer to ensure this evil does not relocate."
The evil idol proves to be vulnerable to Xarroth's fire. Once it is destroyed you feel a tenuous rumbling under your feet that quicly fades away, as if a burrowed Ankheg had just left the area.
Exploring the rest of the camp you find the tent remains that Sabastian saw before. Acid burns, which you now can identify came from an Ankheg attack, cover the tents and have destroyed almost all equipment left there. You see the ground disturbed in multiple locations, and dragging marks all around. The monsters probably took the workers underground to eat after attacking.
No animals or monsters attack you while you walk around. But no survivors are found. The tracks here are muddled, but after examining them carefully Rhok believes that no one was able to escape on foot.
"Well that was likely a very bad time for them." Lia says with a sad glance around the area. She turns to the man from the cabin. "What do you plan to do now? We have your supplies, but it doesn't appear like you have any workers left to actually run this place..."
After you convince Tibor that it's safe to go outside, he opens the door carrying a satchel "no survivors? it's going to be hard telling their families what happened here." He answers to Lia first "supplies or not, I can't do all the work by myself. Would you be willing to escort me to Phandalin?"
Seeing the destroyed totem, he shudders "other traders may compete with us, but I doubt any of them would go so low as to curse our operation here. This is the first time those monsters have attacked us. If I had seen them before I would have hired guards too. I'll have to travel to Neverwinter and ask an audience with Lord Neverember to report this." He smiles a bit to add "not that he would refuse to meet with me, but protocol should be followed."
"You think it too discovered the presence of a dragon roosting nearby?" Xarroth thinks aloud.

Lia religion is 12, rolled in Game Log.
"Yeah, something must've chased it into this area, but then, we've seen displaced Orcs and Ogres as well..."

Rhok, after looking at the stick figures will start looking around the chimney and foundation

OOC: Are the figures generic, or do they have individual characteristics?
I have a +0 in religion, so I'll pass this one.

"I say to destroy the thing, or at least to move it away from here, and where it cannot harm anyone." Lia says.
"I'd destroy them, too. And we should ask Tibor if he has any suspects" Lothlién adds
(Apologies for the delay, thank you for rolling!)

"Let's do that and help this place heal..." Rhok agrees with the group

"And also... do you have any guess about who would have cast such curse upon your camp?" Lothlién inquires
"Yes, someone must have gotten extremely crossed at you to pull something like this. Are those insects typically used with curses?" Rhok asks

(Did the idols we just burnt (d'oh!) look similar to what the half-orc used to summon those twig men?)

Lothlién agrees with escorting him back.
They look similar, and the hair that tied them together was too thick to be human. It most likely came from a boar.
