Xarroth remembers someone mentioning tales a rug that smothered people to death, some wizard thought it would be the perfect trap to set in their tower. But as the tale went, the carpet only restrained people. It didn't grow teeth or tried to bite intruders. As for other shapechanger information, it does not sound like a doppelganger, those ones only morph themselves into humanoids, not objects.
OOC: I'll assume one of you asked the king for directions to the throne room.
You walk back the same path you came, pass a closed door to your left and arrive at the intersection where the tunnel to your left leads to the inventor's workshop. Taking the tunnel to your right, you walk 20 feet and get to an impressive set of double doors, made out of gears and cogs. As you push the doors open, the gears turn in an spectacular show of engineering prowess.
Two identical thrones dominate the 30 by 30 feet room, sitting a few steps over the main floor agains the wall opposite of the double doors. The stone floor has darker colored rectangular spot in the middle. As if a carpet occupied that space for a long time. But there is no carpet on sight.

Lothlién readies a Fire Bolt and follows Xarroth, carefully. "I would guess it now looks like anything that's not a rug, since his victims know about that one..."
He will very carefully poke around objects like chests, tables ou cupboards with the tip of a dagger, trying to find anything that doesn't feel like it should.
Lia uses her dagger to poke and prod anything she thinks might be something other than what it seems, pretty much anything that is not solid stone gets poked.
Rhok looks at the spot where the carpet used to be and tries to discern what the sticky substance is, and if any tracks/drag marks are around the carpet area proper
You move around the room, inspecting everything. Xarroth stands guard, but there are no noises coming from inside the room, apart from the ones the party members are causing. You can faintly hear some hammering coming from the workshop.
Lia pokes around the thrones. They are made out of metal and don't move at all. The stairs leading to them feel like solid stone.
Rhok examines the purple goo in the floor. It sticks to anything that touches it and it takes a lot of effort to take things out of it.
Lothlién walks around the walls. The paintings are stuck firmly in place, the oil lamps hang from their pulley system, making it easy to lower them to gnome height for refilling. There are two bookcases on the back wall, left and right of the double thrones. You feel a small breeze coming from the back of the one to the right. Poking around you notice that moving a book about gardening the whole bookcase pivots, revealing a dark corridor.
"Guys, I found something! And it didn't try to kill me yet!" Lothliénsays, kind of disappointed by not finding the shapeshifter, but also excited with a secret room.
Lothlién walks forward into the newly opened passage. There is an undisturbed layer of dust on the floor, no sticky goo either. The corridor goes straight for some 20 feet and ends in a wall with a lever on it. Looking back you notice a similar lever on the back of the bookcase at the secret tunnel's entrance.
There are no noises coming from behind the secret door. After a moment of listening, Lothlién pulls the lever to open it. The wall at the end of the tunnel slides sideways revealing a richly decorated room. A complicated chandelier contraption illuminates two identical four poster beds on the wall to your left, and two desks the wall to your right.
Sitting akwardly in front of one desk is a gnome wearing a crown, watching a compound pendulum swing. Another crown wearing gnome is reading a book in a padded chair near the beds.
The one reading the book notices your entrance and stands up "intruders! Trespassers! What do you think are you doing here? We do not take kindly to interruptions in our private chamber!"
The gnome by the desk hears him and looks in your direction, but stays seated "of course, the secret passage, I had forgotten about it! I'm king Jebbedo, please help me get out of here."

"Just as well check it out." Lia agrees, nodding to the passage.
Lothlién heads into the corridor - he didn't relly want to go first, but he wanted even less that the others knew that

Growing more and more paranoid at every step, Lothlién leans his ear on the wall, trying to hear anything on the other side.

If he doesn't hear anything, he'll just take a deep breath before pulling the lever.
Xarroth isn't far behind (with a torch, if needed). He, too, is helping the half-elf to not be caught surprised by creature or contraption.
He speaks quietly, "A leader with no secrets needs no fear of assassination."
