“Thanks,” Aluzira says to Tarek before peering into the room. She moves over to the box and cask wondering why they’re here, before looking closely at the walls for any sign that this room may have had religious or ritualistic uses.

Anakis thanks Tarek and Aluzira for her dagger back. She then moves over to the hole with Nicolas, standing a few feet away from him on the edge. As he drops his torch down, she looks down into the hole with her dark vision, attempting to make out any details that might be highlighted by the falling light, but also anything she can make out without it as well (Perception: 2).
Your examination of the walls, Aluzira, reveals depictions of various figures in paint, long faded with age. Among them are a shadowy figure whose face is hidden by a black mask and another figure of light who bears a solar disc. Many more figures adorn the walls, some bearing musical instruments while others seem to represent aspects of nature, and many lesser beings seem to surround them including feathered serpents and some that are demonic, all depicted in such a way as to suggest they are meeting here in this circular room.
The image is taken away, however, as Nicolas's torch drops down into the hole, illuminating a vertical shaft twenty feet long and five feet in diameter, and lands another ten feet below on a bare stone floor, plunging the room into darkness, except for a column of dim light that projects upwards onto the ceiling.
Remacle moves forward to the doorway with his torch to provide more light. "Well," he says, "does anyone have a rope?"
Having seen the depth of the hole, Nicolas will pull out another torch (OOC - cause apparently he has a million of these things in his inventory!) and cast Light on it which should end the spell on the torch down the hole. As he’s in his bag and Remacle asks about rope, he will pull out his hempen rope and hold it out to the halfling.
Aluzira looks over her shoulder towards Mr. Remacle “Do you mean to go down there?” She asks curiously, Before digging in her backpack for a candle, “Anakis, may I borrow your tinderbox? I saw some interesting paintings over here but I need a bit of light.”
Anakis looks up from her gaze down into the hole and nods. She walks over to Aluzira and rifles through her pack as she does before handing her tinderbox to Aluzira. "What did you see? Was it a pretty mural? I always loved looking at the pictures hung up on the walls of the nice houses but I never got to enjoy them very long because I wasn't meant to..." she catches herself suddenly, realising what she was about to say, and stops, "Uh... never mind."
As Anakis mentions a mural, Tarek chuckles and turns to her and Aluzira. "If you don't mind, I'd like to see the mural as well. I'll catch up to the rest of you," he says to the others as soon as they begin climbing down the rope.
Ash also climbs down the rope. "Just out of interest, why did the council hire us? surely there is a proper group of professionals that could do this better? Or an army perhaps?"

“I will take responsibility for what I have done. [...] If must fall, I will rise each time a better man.” ― Brandon Sanderson, Oathbringer.
Nicolas's torch once again illuminates the room, and the mural seems even more vibrant than before. On one side, an older man with long golden hair and beard, robed in shining white and surrounded by eagles, gestures upwards at the apex of the domed ceiling, where you can see that the shaft once continued up, presumably to the sky, but was long ago blocked and filled in from above. He seems to be drawing the light of day into the room with the solar disc he carries. On the other side, a handsome youth, his face obscured by a black mask, who, although wreathed in shadow, is dressed in a colorful jerkin and breeches and wears a grey cloak. His gesture is towards the pit, from which darkness seems to rise, comingling with the light from above. The two figures, along with all the others that decorate the walls of the small room, each seem to be offering a contribution to the whole, one his light, the other his darkness.
Remacle pauses to respond to Aluzira as he takes the rope from Nicolas. "It seems to me that either we go down there or through one of them other two doors," he says, "and that laughing you heard has me a bit spooked. Seems we've spent enough time messing about with doors for the time being, if you take my meaning, but take your pick. I'll just see if I can find something sturdy to tie this rope to in case we want to use it." He and the other halflings set about moving the wooden pallet in the other room towards the doorway and securing the rope to it while the other side dangles down into darkness. After a short argument, they come to an agreement on the correct knot to use and seem satisfied with their work.
Seeing Ash already climbing down, Remacle looks to the rest of the party and asks, "Is it settled then? Are we going down?"
“Thanks!” Aluzira says with a smile and starts to light her candle. Although it’s not very effective in comparison to Nicolas’ torch she keeps it lit anyways and hands the tinderbox back to Anakis. “That makes sense, I think going down would be good then,” She says in reply to Mr. Remacle. She pauses for a moment to look at the painting and can’t help but smile at the fact it seems to depict balance and harmony. She then makes her way to the pit and blows her candle out before watching as Ash climbs down. “I’ll wait up here till everyone’s ready to climb down.”
(DM Question - does Anakis recognise the masked figure as her patron?)
"We can see the darkness," Anakis points over to the hole, "But what happened to the light the other guy is supposed to be providing? Is that why there's undead creatures down here now? Because he stopped lighting the way?"
If my description aligns with Anakis’s concept of Mask, which I hope it somewhat does, then I think she would recognize him. How she reacts to the image is, of course, up to you.
(OOC - yeah, awesome. I figured that was who you were describing, but wanted to make sure. I'll wait to play out her interaction with the mural as she won't do anything openly with everyone else around. Unless everyone has decided to descend into the pit already?)

As Tarek looks closer at the figure of the light-filled man, he recognizes the man as his deity, or so he thinks. "I'm not sure," says Tarek. "Pelor's light rarely fades on its own. Something must have dispelled the light." He shrugs and examines the mural for anything else that catches the eye (Investigation: 17) before moving towards the rope that has been thrown down into the pit.
Another detail of the mural that catches your eye, Tarek, is that among the smaller figures depicted, there appears to be a group of people -- they look human -- emerging from a hole very much like the one you are all standing around. As they come out, they join others who are sitting in a circle around the hole, apparently taking council with one another.
"Okay, well, I guess that settles it," says Remacle as he sees Tarek too begin to move towards the rope, and he and the other halflings prepare themselves to go down into the pit. Taking up Ash's question, he replies, "The council gave up on this place a long time ago, and there has been an uneasy truce ever since between Ekuepool and the undercity. Their goal in sending you all down here is perhaps to gain some small advantage without having to expend much in the way of resources themselves, if I guess correctly."
It will take about five minutes for everyone to descend in turn.
Ash, being the first to reach the bottom of the rope, finds himself emerging from the shaft out of a hole in the ceiling of a chamber about twenty feet wide and thirty feet long. A wide archway forms one end of the chamber, beyond which a wide passageway continues straight ahead into the darkness, while to your left, another narrower passageway similarly extends beyond the limit of your vision.
The ceiling of the chamber glistens with dampness, and a large wooden box sits at one end. An earthenware decanter lays on the floor nearby along with several shards of broken pottery.
In the dim, colorless conditions of the chamber, Ash, you can feel a presence, although you don't see, hear, or otherwise detect with your senses that anyone is there.

Before she descends the rope, and waiting for everyone else to move, Anakis looks back at the mural, placing a hand on the masked figure. "You point the way, master. I'll keep an eye out for you to guide me next, like you did last time." And she then skips off quickly and climbs down the rope.
Once at the bottom, she looks around, then up at the ceiling - especially after those things dropped on us previously (Perception: 21).
(DM Question - can Anakis see anything different with her extended dark vision?)

Nicolas will approach the hole and drop his torch into it to see how deep it is.
