OOC for All: If the direction this adventure has taken has become uncomfortable for any of you, please don't hesitate to let me know by Private Message. I am aiming for a measure of "realism" in that there will be tough decisions to be made, but I know that that's not necessarily the flavor of adventure everyone enjoys. Some people prefer to relax with a more light-hearted adventure where good is good and bad is bad and everything always works out okay in the end. If at any point you become uncomfortable with anything during the course of our game together, please let me or another player know in whatever way you feel comfortable. I myself am not a fan of overly gritty, edge-lording when it comes to story-lines and encounters. I try to balance the heavy with the light, but if my balance is off, it can easily change.
Fedex steps to the side and speaks softly to Lander. "My friend, I am not overly comfortable with being an executioner either. But think, what is to happen to her after we deliver her to authorities? Will she not most likely be put in stocks for days to be ridiculed and spat upon before she is summarily executed? Her crimes are manifold. We have not judged her. She has judged herself and stands here already convicted. We just don't wish to get our hands dirty." Fedex pauses briefly and then continues. "No, I can think of no authority that would show more mercy in her passing than I would give her, can you?"
Lander listens to Fedex. He knows that he's right but it's hard to admit. "No, you're right. It just bothers me to think of anyone suffering. She did make her bed though when they waylaid and murdered other travellers on this road. We can't let her go, only to turn around and have her hurt more innocents. If the proper authorities can't do anything out here, we may be forced to."He inches closer to Fedex and gives him a small hug with his left arm. He looks up at Fedex with sad eyes. "If it comes to that, I'd prefer to not witness it."
(OOC: I'm fine with this. I'm just trying to duck and dodge a bit and decide how I want to play a lawful good character. Thanks for making me think. It does make you make decisions based on greater good and other ideals for sure.)
OOC: Well we know Keragri’s desire is to be quick, which would be merciful in its’ own way. We just need to hear from Riona, officially. I still think the well should be searched but then afterwards, those that don’t want to witness her demise can take a five minute head start and I/we will follow with Riona’s rope.
"Yes that is of course still my first option as well, I just want everyone to be prepared for the worse case scenario. Perhaps now is a good time to plan our next location, is there anything close by, hopefully within a days hike?"
She then turns to the man with the wolf. "And yes i think it's best if you open up that package now, however I must ask you do it a few feet away from us, never to safe with magic and all that. Maybe the instructions will give us an idea of where to head next. Keragri if you will?"
She jerks her head between Keragri and the man, motioning for him to make the delivery.
"And for the well, I can ask Mr. Declan to look into it, his eyes a rather good in a dark spot. Additionally would you gentlemen be opposed to allowing me 10 minutes to cast a spell? I would like to search the surroundings for any magic, my charm on the woman should last another 50 minutes so we have a bit of time before we start to see her true colours again."
**OOC
Do we know any towns or cities near by? Or military outposts of any kind?
“Declan won’t be able to see below the surface if there’s water down there. Does your cleaning magic also dry?” Fedex asks Riona.
OOC: none of us have dark vision, I think. So unless we have a magic source of light that can be submerged, someone would have to feel around underwater. I also note that the dwarf has dark vision AND has not been searched yet.
Riona: Durothil says "The closest location would be back in Hill's Edge, I'm afraid." as he accepts the packet from Keragri.
OOC: You may attempt a History check if you'd like to try and recall known locations of other settlements or outposts in the area.
All: Durothil backs away from the group, giving you all roughly 30ft of space. He mutters a string of words that are foreign to Fedex and Keragri, and the seal along the packet glows bright blue for a second before fading away. He opens the packet and peers inside before removing a collection of papers. He scans each of them quickly before placing them back in the packet to review more closely later. He stows the packet in his pack and returns to the group. "It seems I'm responsible for your compensation. Twenty five gold pieces each." And he opens a pouch on his belt. Durothil sticks his hand inside, then, the rest of his arm up to his elbow. He digs much more deeply in the relatively small pouch than would seem possible given it's outward appearance. He withdraws and hands you each twenty five gold pieces, then closes the pouch. "I also have a potential lead for you all if you're interested." He lowers his voice and leans in close, "The instructions for your payment also mentioned that you may head to Baldur's Gate for further work. According to additional information in the packet, a caravan is departing Hill's Edge for Baldur's Gate the day after tomorrow. Perhaps you can find work as armed escorts?"
Riona and Lander:
The words that Durothil muttered are clearly Elvish, though nonsensical in their arrangement. "Leaf, sword, mason, twelve, early."
"Thank you very much Mr, I'm glad we could be of service, even if the final stretch was less professional than desired. I think that escort job may be a good idea, if we make good distance with the remainder of the day we might be able to get in early, hand the woman into authorities, and still have time to catch the caravan. Although if we wish to pass judgment ourselves it may weigh heavy on my soul but I would not be forcefully opposed. Handing this woman over is likely a death sentence, the only difference, like Fedex had said, is we don't give her the killing blow. It may even be a mercy, considering her wounds, the travel will likely be a painful one. I would also rather we don't use her to search, the action seams, unkind, considering her likely fate."
Riona nods at the man and gives him a small smile. She then pulls out her spell book and flips to a dog eared page, pulls out her focus and start tracing glyphs in the air. She will continue doing this for 10 minutes (and 6 seconds technically) unless interrupted in order to finish casting detect magic.
Fedex thanks Durothil and pockets the 25 gp with his personal stash. To everyone he says, "If it is the will of the group, we will take the prisoner to Hill's Edge so that she will face her punishment." He then searches the woman for items to include with the bounty of collected items to be scanned for magical properties. As he searches, he calls out to the group, "I am willing to go into the well to manually search it," He then smilingly eyes Lander "even though I am not the lightest in our party to eventually be hauled out. Riona, please take a look down the well while you are scanning for magical auras. It could make my trip even more profitable for us."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Riona:
As your awareness expands, you detect magic in many forms in the area immediately surrounding you. There are tell-tale auras surrounding both you and Lander, concentrated on your arcane focus and spell book. Durothil also radiates magically across most of his body; his boots, cloak, pouch, weaponry, and pack are all suffused with a gently glowing radiance. The items found by Lander all appear mundane, offering no magical emissions. The Dwarven Woman also appears to be clear of any magic.
Fedex: As you start your search, the Dwarven Woman doesn't react to your touch. She stands still and silent, with her head down while you conduct a thorough search of her person. After you finish searching her lower leg and boots, and begin standing back up, she suddenly jerks her head back, attempting to smash your face with the back of her head.
I'm going to make an unarmed strike attack roll for the woman, with Disadvantage since she's restrained and can't see you. Please make a Dexterity Saving Throw to avoid being struck.
Lander smirks and looks to Fedex. "Fine.... I can take a hint. I'm the littlest, yes I'll go into the well and take a look. You better not drop me. There's no reason we couldn't have sent tiny little Keg down there, but I'll take one for the team."
(OOC: Let me know if you need me to make an investigation check when I go down the well.)
Fedex: The Dwarven Woman immediately tries to elbow you as well, but the rope prevents her from reaching you. She does turn to face you and spits at you, snarling "F*cking pig!" as she attempts to stare you down. "I hope you do take me back to Hill's Edge. I'm going to enjoy making your lives hell for as long as I can."
You're lowered into the well with one foot in a loop, gripping the rope in both hands. The stones of the well rise up around you as you bump gently against them. They're slick with moisture and you imagine attempting to climb your way out without a rope would be impossible. You feel your foot break the surface of the water, it's chill filling your boot and dampening your pants. The cold water creeps up your legs, past your waist and when it gets to about chest height, your feet touch the bottom of the well. The smell is earthy and dank, but you don't detect the scent of rot.
Please make an Investigation Check to see if you find anything at the bottom of the well.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Lander looks all around the well. He checks for any loose stones or crevasses where items could be hidden. He also swings his feet all along the bottom to try and feel anything.
The stones all feel secure, though it's hard to grip their slippery surface. As you sweep your foot along the bottom, you don't feel anything any larger than a small rock. The few objects you've reached down and grabbed have turned out to be ordinary rocks. There are definitely no bodies in the well. Mud swirls around your feet, clouding the already dark water. You see the circular opening of the top of the well reflected in the rippling surface of the water. Your search yields nothing of note.
Riona wonders over to observe and start giggling at the sight of Lander crawling around down there. "You know at a quick glance I might believe there is a child stuck in the well after all!"
She elbows Fedex as she chuckles and says in a hushed town. "Beware the woman only thinks kindly of me for the time being. It may be good to try and reson with her once the magic wears off in another half hour or so."
She then turns her voice back to Lander and shouts, "You holler up of you need anything okay"

OOC: If an authority does exist that can rehabilitate this woman, then I am good with taking that path. Or we can continue our current trajectory.
