It is overkill, yes. :) You don't need to make a separate roll for each item, just be a bit more specific about what you want to search. Also, bear in mind that searching through a pile of rubble or a bookshelf can take time, depending on how thorough you are. We'll say that you take the rest of the morning to complete your search.
In the pile of rubble and broken furniture, you find one pouch of blasting powder.
The books are mostly in gnomish. Does Wash read gnomish?

Hehe, I wasn't sure whether that was what you wanted from the group message, so thought I'd try. I'll just roll once and specify a few things next time. I can't believe I rolled a 4 for the thing I'm most interested in and wasted a 20 on a bloody empty chest.
Wash doesn't read gnomish, which is really quite lazy of him considering he has been living with gnomes for a while (though the background languages he has make more sense anyway, even if less useful).
Alton is disappointed in not finding a trap door under the rug and sits in a chair with a huff. "Well that is disappointing. I was hoping to find a trap door or something that would make for a good story." He settles for playing with his new crossbow, making sure he knows how to load and unload the bolts with relative safety.

Wash asks the others again "Should we report what we have found out back to the Firemarks or even back to the Crownsguard, or should we just go and try to find this secret cave by ourselves? Usually I'd urge caution and suggest we get some more muscle, which the Crownsguard might be able to provide, though I've been impressed with how you have both handled yourselves so far so I am happy if you think we don't need it."
Alton hops off his chair with the cossbow loaded and in hand, "Wash has a point about informing at least the Watchmaster on what we have found. Maybe to save time we send him a letter? I do think informing Sleese about this might just make him worry even more, we can fill him in later when we get back."

There's paper and ink in Nima's house, if you don't have any of your own. You write a note for the Watchmaster and leave it with the guard at the gate as you head out. She's confused, but with your badges she accepts the note and doesn't question you too hard about the kobold prisoner with you.
You leave the smoky atmosphere of the city for cleaner mountain air as you begin your hike up the treacherous heights of the Silberquel Ridge. The steep climb grows more and more precarious as you go, with pathways becoming thin and hard to traverse among the cliff-side trees and gray rock of the mountainside. You keep the silver line of the tumbling waterfall always in your sights, a guide toward your hopeful destination.
Please give me a marching order for the journey, which will take several hours.
Balassar, make an Intimidation check as you are leading (or carrying?) and controlling the manacled kobold.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Balassar just nods at their plan, it wouldn't add any time. He just grabs the shack and hurls them forward looking at the Kobold "Lead." his voice stern and controlling.
Wash volunteers to go second in line and says "I'll have a magic-blast-thingy ready to go, so if our kobald friend here tries anything funny or tries to escape, I'll take him down". [Magic-blast-thingy = eldritch blast, I'm hoping this comment means either Balassar gets advantage on his intimidation check or I also get to make an intimidation check.]
It's tough going making the climb. The kobold seems to be doing its best, but you have to slow down a lot as the path narrows and there are a few places where it takes time to clamber up over rocks that have fallen across the way. You feel you are getting close to the Silver Falls - you can hear the sound of falling water, though you have not yet caught sight of it. Then you hear a different noise, a screeching, and then a flapping of wings, and almost before you know it, and shadow falls across you as a large bird-like creature descends towards you, claws outstretched.
Damnit, some terrible rolls there. Hope Alton or Balassar have better luck.
Alton will look under the rug, mostly trying to find a trap door or something of the sort.

Great minds think alike (though fools seldom differ).

There is, sadly, no trap door under the rug. Good try though. :)

(I took an average of all the rolls -10 I think - so the 20 wasn't wasted really.)

Wash agrees and suggests that they drop the letter to a guard on the way out of town.

Alton takes up the back of the line, or when permitted, walks next to Wash and keeps his new crossbow at the ready. "I'll have your guy's back."
